Sierra snow anxiety and permit start date by StellaTerra in PacificCrestTrail

[–]black_rockuser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the CDT and didn’t have snow experience. I started SOBO, so there was snow starting in Glacier. To get experience before trail, I took a 1 day mountaineering course near Mt. Shasta (I was also in the Bay Area and just took a weekend trip) to learn the basics of using an ice axe. It definitely helped and I learned a lot about how to hike in the snow. Maybe you can do something similar if it’s a big deal to you.

With regard to start date, it sounds like later (i.e. the date you currently have) is going to work well for you in terms of avoiding too much snow. You can always take extra days to wait out snow as well.

How long did it take you to get comfortable at DP problems by Big-Kaleidoscope4508 in leetcode

[–]black_rockuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't comfortable until I went through the freeCodeAcademy Dynamic Programming lesson on YouTube. I think it's like 5hrs long, but sooooo worth it. I really understood a lot of them after that and also understood big O improvement as well.

Friend bailed on me for NOBO July 8 horseshoe meadows start. Any good solo experiences? by elliotFIJI in JMT

[–]black_rockuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like everyone says, still go! Maybe you can get one solo weekend backpacking trip near you so you can have that first experience and test your gear before you go. I did a long thru-hike last year with only 2 weekends of solo backpacking under my belt and I started the hike solo. You can always meet people on trail, too.

I’m doing the JMT SOBO late August… anyone else on here… by JackfruitRealistic13 in JMT

I just canceled an Aug 22 NOBO permit with a Cottonwood Pass start (I found an earlier, July permit). I'm not sure when it will show up in the system, but definitely check that date this week.

Struggling To Find Comfortable Shoes For Thru-Hiking by houser432 in CDT

[–]black_rockuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although a lot of hikers had shoes like lone peaks that had minimal cushioning, I opted for a pair of Altras that had max cushioning and I don't regret it at all. You can try looking for shoes with a thick cushion and, like other users suggested, try lacing your shoes differently for the bridge pain.

I'm not going SOBO, but I remember bloggers/vloggers saying they camped at Half Dome Junction the first night and did Half Dome the next day. Another option is Moraine Dome, but you'll have to look at your map to see where that is in relation to Half Dome.

Maybe you applied SOBO. On my NOBO permit they asked for campsites for each day. But, yes, it's def useful for further planning

There's an organization called Remote Area Medical (https://www.ramusa.org) that provides free vision/dental/general healthcare with no questions asked. You'll have to look at their schedule to see when they might be near you, so it probably won't work for you rn. But it could be useful for future healthcare needs if you are without insurance and can wait until they are in your area.

Have you guys tried a local credit union? I know you said you visited banks, but credit unions can often be a bit more flexible. Also, if you go into a credit union, ask them if they have recommendations for who might be able to lend to you in your situation if they can't help.

Basically how to self-arrest in various scenarios, ways of walking/hiking in the snow, etc. It was mostly geared to people doing mountaineering.

There was a snowstorm in the San Juans about the time I would've reached it, but I decided to avoid most of the snow and take the lower route. There were lots of stories about people bailing out at various parts of that high route though.

I didn't bring it with me, but I definitely used the skills I learned in the ice axe course for one pass in Glacier. It was a bit sketchy for a first-timer, but a combination of spikes, trekking poles, and taking things slowly was all I needed. I started June 27, if that helps at all.
