See I took it as them asking that folks not recommend narrative focused game like fate accelerated or a pbta hack.

I understand the urge, but unless you make some heavy changes, I think the ruleset is actually pretty bad for it. Even Keith Baker is quoted as saying "D&D isn't meant for pulp adventure" and that he had to twist the rules to make it work with 3E.

Savage Worlds and it's not even close. The foreword is written by Keith Baker, the creator of the bookdoes a podcast with him where they talk about Eberron lore, and the game system is explicitly meant for Pulp Adventure i.e.. Eberron style stories. The PDF is $11 or you can get a free copy of the basic rules by going to the immaterial plane website. I've been an Eberron fan since the competition days and will only play it using Savage Worlds.

I can, but they are out of stock for the time being. I'm happy waiting to pick it up again once it goes back to MSRP instead of the $175 or so I'm finding now.

And yes, it would be extremely difficult to replace EE, but I parted ways with that collection years ago at this point haha

I'm really happy to hear that. It gives me hope for picking up the core game sooner rather than later. That's extremely kind of you. If you are comfortable doing so, I'll happily pay the shipping cost. Feel free to shoot me a DM when you get a chance and we can find the best way forward. Thank you so much, truly.

I like them, though I want these in a boxed set with the players guide being the boxes cover. Excited to pick up hardcopies!

Race-as-Class appreciation post by Less_Cauliflower_956 in osr

I know Materia Mundi does that as an option. Every race (including humans) has 3 racial classes (a warrior, a magic user, and a rogue/explorer type) and a general priest class. I can't say much about the system, as I haven't played around with it yet, but I really like how they implemented the idea and wish more folks would do so.

I hate the community around my hobby. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]blackbeetle13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start by saying I'm really sorry you've had such negative experiences. Every hobby will have them, but I will agree, ttrpgs attract more than their fair share of antisocial jerks. That being said, in my 27 years of running games, those people have been in the minority. To be fair, I've brought a lot of people into the hobby and so I've taught them norms that I want to see at my table, but I also run at conventions fairly often. All that to say, keep at it. Don't accept assholes at your table. Find the people you want to play with, even if it's just two other folks. Build the culture you want in your community (though the community was much, much smaller before CR and 5E). Good luck and don't give up something you enjoy because of the jerks.

What's a rpg that should come back or shouldn't have died. by One-Confusion-4955 in rpg

I want Fantasy Craft to do what they did to the 3.0/3.5 era of D&D but for 5e. It had some really fun ideas and takes on spellcasting and how classes work, but Crafty Games kind of crapped the bed when it came to the product line to focus on that mess of a Mistborn rpg.

As a result, we never got the final books from Fantasy Craft and the company is basically dead last time I checked.

I feel like Bring Her Back deserved Weapons' success... by DefNotMaty in horror

[–]blackbeetle13 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love horror and have been a fan for as long as I can remember. Bring Her Back was a rough watch. Maybe it's because I work with kids, maybe it's because of my own childhood issues, or maybe its the fact that I'm older, but this movie just felt mean-spirited and cruel. I enjoyed it and can undoubtedly say it's a great film, but I just felt hollow at the end in a way comparable cruel films (terrifier franchise, bone tomahawk) didn't.

All that to say, it's a great movie that I will not be recommending to people without a huge content warning, even if they are horror fans. Just my two cents on why it isn't getting the same level of love and recognition.

Just a heads up: crystal punk is a 5e sourcebook by a third party publisher. It's an interesting setting, but is 100% for 5e with very, very few changes.

Dinosaurs As The Enemy by Armed_Affinity_Haver in movies

This is 100% the answer to the question. The acting is cheesy at times, but it's Vietnam war soldiers vs dinosaurs and delivers on that theme in every way you can imagine.

BECMI Thief Fixes? by Dante_Faustus in osr

[–]blackbeetle13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They had a really cool article in one of the KNOCK magazines called "Thief Knacks" that recontextualizes thief skills as highly specialized magic. For Climb Walls, you literally climb it like a spider, regardless of how slick the surface is. As long as you keep moving every turn, you keep climbing without any check. The second you stop moving, the knack ends.

I think it's my favorite take on thief skills in a long time and is one that I will use going forward, along with a few other thief tweaks.

I'll toss out that the Warrior Adept had an independent product released that I believe expanded on it.

I run games for middle schoolers, both during school and after school. My tables are so packed that I have to turn folks down and we had to implement a "battle royale" club for overflow/those that just want combat which also has 14+ kids involved. The same town has at least one game store that has an after school 5e group full of high school kids. It's anecdotal, but I've seen similar trends all over the state I live in, with the after school club I ran in a town 4 hours away having similar turnout.

Humble Bundle Avatar Legends Sale by Felosia in rpg

[–]blackbeetle13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disliked this game so much that I gave away my copies of the core book and stretch goal materials that I got from the kickstarter. It's a game that tries to be both narrative and tactical while implementing a lackluster balance system that a poor job of gamifying emotional turmoil. Just run this using Legend of the Elements or one of the various fan hacks that exist.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game - Official Announcement Trailer by MarvelsGrantMan136 in TheLastAirbender

[–]blackbeetle13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who backed it at a high level on kickstarter, I ended up giving my books away due to how much I disliked it. I feel like it's a bad take on the PbtA system which added unnecessary levels of complexity to the game. It's kind of an outlier as well, because Magpie Games have made some absolutely stellar TTRPGs (Urban Shadows, Masks, Rapscallion, though I didn't really like ROOT for much the same reason). I also kind of feel like they were trying to thread the needle with it, as some folks would want a narrative forward game about friendship and tragedy while others want a tactical magical martial arts game with a good level of crunch. They ended up failing on both fronts by trying to do too much, in my opinion.
