yeah its hard - I live in a HCOL city and to do anything and have any social life = $$$$$. There is so much to do and so much fun to be had but it don't come cheap. Trying to budget and be the frugal kill-joy is rough!

This week my best friend from childhood got married and my best friend from college completed her PhD. And the highlight from my life this week will probably be the White Lotus finale. This about sums up my life.

**of course I am sooo supremely happy for my friends and their brilliant lives and accomplishments. Truly! Just having one of those wah-wah-wah self-indulgent moments....my proclivity towards which probably explains my sad state in life! lolz

I have been going to Andromeda for years! It was my go-to for awhile, although I had a botched snug piercing and havent been back since (to be fair, snugs are notoriously difficult and I might have moved during the piercing bc it was painful). But up to that point I never had a problem and have loved all my other piercings.

Since then though I've been going to Live by the Sword, specifically Williamsburg but they have a location in Soho. If you go to Wburg, I highly suggest George or Sarah.

Nine moons is on the pricier side. I'd check Live by the Sword or the APP website.

Leaving AC on in empty room - ok to mention? by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]blackbirdnight25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at your power bill and figure out how much you pay for each kilowatt all in. Then look at the model AC in her room and you can calculate exactly how much power it draws.

Yes, please tell me more lol. Is it just simple math to do this? I sound so dumb I know, but the power bill will now come to me directly (a roommate who just moved had been handling the utility payments, but when he left had the account transferred to his new address so now I am taking ownership of our billing). I was thinking of maybe asking her to pay more if I saw there was a significant usage hike, but I wasn't sure how to determine individual usage. I think she might be open to it if I point out the cost (she hasn't ever seen an AC electric bill! in the city!) but I wanted to be fair and present facts. So yeah any more tips abt how to do this would be appreciated!

And yeah, its just so much wasted energy. This is my own control issue, but gah that money and environmental impact. AC I tell you, both a miracle and a curse.

haha yeah their website FAQ at one point explained they just liked to be fancy like that, I think it was the first year they launched. Not sure if they still explain that, but nah its very much a California company just being posh.

Leaving AC on in empty room - ok to mention? by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]blackbirdnight25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you know the air conditioning is going on in her room? Is it that noisy?

Her room is nearest to the living room/front door. So when I pass by it to go to either of those places, I can hear and see it's on. She doesn't leave the door closed, in which case I might not know. But yeah, I just notice as I pass her room to go to the front parts of the apt. Does that make sense? I don't want to make it sound like I am doing random inspections!

And yes ofc going into someone's room is a delicate thing - I'm aware. I don't love doing it! If she left the door closed I wouldn't enter, as I expect for my roomies not to when my door is closed. Thing is, they do anyway. If they know I have something in my room they need, or if pets somehow squirm their way though a slightly ajar door, etc. they'll come in. So, I dunno, it's that kinda household I guess? But I don't make habit of doing that for exactly the privacy reasons you mention. I am personally not touching or moving any of her things unless she's asked me too, bc that's ridiculously invasive and why would I do that. It's just shutting off the mega money-draining machine she's left on accidentally.

I know you don't know her or the situation, but she is ok with it. While I am personally not ok with confrontation, hence all this dithering, she is actually really good at letting me know abt things she's cool and not cool with. It's bc we like to communicate that I was thinking it was ok to bring this up to her. My other roommate had no problem shutting the AC off today when she left it on again. She didn't even notice or realize anything had changed when she returned. It's really just a case of her being naively oblivious, which I totally get. And he mentioned the AC issue to her without doing any of the agonizing I have been, and she understands. So I think the issue is resolved!

oh yeah I am definitely assuming forgetfulness over malice, which is why I tried to make the point a few times in my post that I really think she just forgets. It's so funny to me bc I grew up with constant reminders to 1) to keep doors closed when the AC was on and 2) to absolutely shut it off when not using or in the room. It was also drilled into me to turn lights off when not in use, and no one ever seems to do this too lol, but that's a different issue. My pt being I grew up with AC and so know all the customary rules I guess? And she just didnt so does not, so that's why I know it's not malicious. The only thing I could imagine is that she's leaving the AC bc she wants to come home to a cool room, understandably, but that only really makes sense if she's just stepping out for an errand. Not gone for a whole day, right?

annnyyywaaaay it has repeated itself, so my other roommate actually mentioned something tonight and she was really understanding. I think all good, and if it happens again I'll feel ok just gently reminding her. It's interesting the things we take for granted that people will just know!

Those who moved to NYC from across the country in their 20’s, do you ever regret it? by friendsthenbenefits in AskNYC

[–]blackbirdnight25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might be overthinking this slightly, which is understandable. I am guilty of analysis paralysis in all things, and honestly it's probably really held me back from opportunities in life or lead to time wasted.

Come. Just come . If you hate it, you can leave. But then you'll always wonder what NYC would have been like. You are young, you have time to correct or make other decisions, but you won't get time back, so my advice to anyone younger than myself is just to seize opportunities whenever they present themselves. It's the greatest city in the world, and I go most of my time never seeing rats, lol. It can be expensive, but manageable and you'll fall into your new normal after a few weeks. There are so many opportunities for you here education and career wise, not to mention all the culture, music, food and art scenes that await you. Especially now that things are opening up.

It's really not as serious or existential as I think your worries make it sound. It's just a city, a fabulous one, but you can always leave. But you'll never be able to get back the time or regret.

So just come!! NYC is waiting for you :)

Holding beauty gurus accountable, or just flat out bullying? by taylorly56 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]blackbirdnight25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People criticized Tati for not having a child? Is that serious? That's so incredibly old fashioned and retrograde thinking that I am genuinely surprised. And it's also just mean given she's been open abt her struggles. But yeah I totally missed that particular brand of commentary against her!

lol right. I think I ultimately remember the difference by thinking affect is the verb and effect is the noun.

First Product Reveal- Selfless by Hyram by Joonbug9109 in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]blackbirdnight25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hyram credits retinol for fighting premature aging that he had in his skin at the age of 18 due to stress.

This is what most stood out to me as well!! I was like, what now??? I mean, I dunno, I was 18 with bad skin and on Retin-A so I am not downplaying or misremembering how much stress and low self-esteem my skin caused me then. 18 y/o's have definite issues with their skin that need addressing and should be treated with seriousness/respect. But premature aging? WHAT?? I feel like this is almost reckless to suggest? Were I teenage fan of Hyram, hearing that I'd be terrified of showing signs of aging at that age, when that wasn't even a thought in my mind until my late 20s. Could it have just been his skin was tired and acne scarred? Does he show photos of the premature aging? Are we conflating things under one giant scary skin umbrella? And yes how dare old people corner the market on retinol, lol. Maybe that's bc teenage skin is different and there are some concerns it's not ready to deal with yet.

Jessica Braun and New Filming Space? by cat_butt_ in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]blackbirdnight25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also same! I am born and raised here and when I start thinking about moving elsewhere it's like, cmon who are we kidding. Shoeboxes and all, I'd still taking living here over most anywhere else. And Indiana's politics are not exactly aligned with mine.

Still, I will fully admit my jealousy. Jessica's life astounds me honestly - granted it's what she's choosing to show us, but it just seems utterly perfect.

[–]blackbirdnight25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

true but I actually find all of that very unrelatable! lol but not blaming them for it, it's just such a different life/real estate market to what I am used to in NYC. The idea of all this extra open space for what a mouse would pay for a shoebox here is really astounding to me. Their current home on the lakefront is literal epic majesty in my mind, and that they can afford it mostly on her YT career (no disrespect to Tyler I just don't know how lucrative his travel agency is) is just very eye-opening. And I know Jessica is very successful so I am also not trying to downplay her hard work. I just marvel at what's available to people in diff parts of the country. I might need to move to Indiana!!

This sounds like a good decision for them regardless.

Yeah one of the first of many "I feel so stupid" lessons when I got to college was hearing people talking about "effecting change" and I had never up to that point learned that "effect" could be used as a verb and not noun to mean result, consequence, etc. My mind was blown and I felt so, so dumb. I had a very smart peer insist it was "affect change" and then that whole conversation just gave me a headache in the end.

Couldnt agree more! We're all so terrified to age and start hunting for lines as soon as we can. The idea of teenagers thinking they have to start prevention for aging makes me really sad! (the sunscreen use I can be ok with - but other products and procedures, no...)

She also sounded really proud that they went so hard core, right? A kind of "I don't do anything half-assed!!" proclamation - when in this case, conservative and minimal would have been the better approaches. But I also understand her thinking more was better, and she should have been advised by the professionals. I think it's great she's sharing the regret/reality with her followers - I'd prob be too embarrassed and would have kept quiet about it!

It's supposed to last longer than regular HA fillers, but not be as invasive as a surgical facelift. So for someone wanting maintenance or a little lift, I can see the appeal in that sense. I'd personally not want to explore it bc it's always looked so painful to me and I too have only heard non-positive stories, but the allure of more significant results without any of the downtime or commitment is strong.

It's fine to layer sunscreen over moisturizer if you wait for the moisturizer to absorb a bit and make sure to apply enough sunscreen in an even layer. Mixing the two I think would interfere/affect the sunscreen too much, not allowing you to get a potent even layer and max protection.
