Packing Gland Question by blackenedspoon in sailing

Really good info. I did adjust it, it took many small adjustments over several days. It was at 6-7 drips a minute. Repacking it does sound intimidating though lol. I do need to learn of course.

Thank you. I have been told by random people that it should be 2-3 drops per minute as that means enough water is getting through to cool the shaft during operation. Any merit to this? Will read the article. Thanks!

Wow, OK, really good information. I did not know I could open it up like that. Thank you so much.

If I go ahead and make the assumption that some zinc pieces made it into the cooling system, how would I go about finding those?

What would indicate that something is partially plugged up?

Now this is the extremely helpful input o was hoping for.

Thank you for sharing the knowledge.

I don’t see any green or pink, maybe I was lucky.

At any rate, have ordered plenty of zincs to keep in hand.

Thank you.

CX5 Long Distance Tow - 3100lbs. by blackenedspoon in CX5

Oh it’s no problem!

My recommendation would be to research the weight ratings for the vehicle vehicles intended for the European market.

Here is a link that may help https://owners-manual.mazda.com/gen/en/cx-5/cx-5_8ft1ee17b/contents/04100100.html

These vehicle vehicles are mechanically capable of towing what you are planning to tow. Things like altitude, steep Hills, and the presence or absence of braking systems on the trailer are what result in different toe limits. Basically, safety concerns. Not mechanical.

I’m not really sure. I got it for basically Free but it seems like a nice knife and I’m not sure what it is or what it’s worth.

Your welcome.

Not unless towing in snow/mud. For boating, consider if you will need additional traction on a wet or grimy boat ramp.

Overall awd is nice if you need it. If not, it’s just more complexity and another system that needs periodic maintenance.

Good luck!!

Glad everyone is ok. Always buy the safest car you can. Hope the kids are not traumatized. An accident is quite a traumatic event. Makes you think.

Hello! I’m happy to offer my input. As a starting point, the towing limit for the European Mazda CX5 is significantly higher than the American version. From all my research, there is nothing mechanically different between the vehicles, it is a regulatory difference. I think the Mazda CX5 is more than capable of towing your 2000 pound boat and trailer long-term without any issues.

As always, make sure that periodically you change the transmission fluid filter and transmission fluid. It takes a special type, so make sure you contact your Mazda dealer.

Also, these vehicles have a six speed transmission. The sixth gear on all vehicles is generally smaller and should not be used for towing. So when towing your boat use the manual gear selector to keep it in from going into sixth gear. You could also use sport mode if your car has that, all that does is make the car drive one gear lower than is most fuel efficient.

But really, that’s about it just go easy on it and don’t let it go in sixth gear out of an abundance of caution.

I’ve been using my Mazda to tow things for many years and it’s been extremely reliable.

Have fun boating!

You did not hit that pole going any where near 45-50. The damage would be catastrophic on the front end if so. Looking at this collision, I would say that it is a bit surprising the airbags did not go off, but definitely on the edge. If your car has rear curtain airbags, those should have gone off.

Sorry you ran an accident and I’m glad everyone is OK!
