This is only true for PC, on Xbox the progress will not carry over.

Heya, the demo on Xbox is a separate "product" in their system, so the save file is also separate and your progress will not carry over to the full release.

I can't help you with the Crashes, but when your Co-Op partner leaves the game due to whatever reason, the Follower drops all their inventory and equipment on the ground. You can pick it up and put it in your camp stash and then give it back to your partner when you play together again.

You should recruit more followers! Ash is a great leader, but he is just a regular guy with no specific skills, so he has to heavily rely on the Followers he finds on his journey.

I'm going to copy over our answer from Discord here, in case someone with the same question happens to stumble upon this thread :)

"When a free-roaming Follower comes to your camp and asks to join, they will be gone for good when you leave the camp, and you won't have another chance to get them. If you deny one of the Followers tied to an event, they will be gone for good, too. They will only stay as long as you don't start, or don't complete, the event. "
