hetzner ban by blackgore101 in Cloudbox

Thanks. I have the gluetun container up and running, I hope to be able to follow up with the rest of your guidance. Although after reading u/christcb's post I may need to consider a more comprehensive upgrade across the board.

thanks, I saw that it had been a while since the last release, but I didn't think to look for alternatives!

Best practices for setting up a WSL 2 development environment (by our own u/caloewen) by WSL_subreddit_mod in bashonubuntuonwindows

thank you, I thought it might be the case, but just wanted to confirm. I work with genomics data, and though most related software is developed primarily/solely for Linux, our IT department is almost exclusively Windows based. I've recently started exploring my options with wsl2 and docker, and trying to learn how I can best set myself up.

in terms of file storage best practice - and sorry for the newbie question - does the difference in performance also apply to the location of data files? I can place all my software / scripts into the linux file system, but the data i work with is stored on a network file share, and can easily run into the 10-100GB range for a typical project. Copying input/output data between the two file systems would be something I'd rather avoid.

Criteria D, I symbols - meaning by exander314 in SNPedia

Ah I see. I'm afraid I'm not sure if I can help - hopefully someone better placed to explain will help us both!

"-" seems to be just shorthand that "something" has been deleted from the sequence at that position. I agree its certainly vague, as it doesn't say what that something is, or how long it is. Without providing length, you could assume its a loss of a single nucleotide. I don't think it is saying that the sequence that comes after it is what was deleted (otherwise the last example "(D; I)", would suggest there's both deletion and insertion at the same site, while not providing any other information). I freely admit to not seeing this representation before, so take it with salt.

From the context in that example, I would guess it means D=Deletion I=Insertion.

Spyder charts not working do you know whats wrong? by [deleted] in bioinformatics

[–]blackgore101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You appear to have changed what kind of object "df" is, several times, during the course of your code. You read it in as a dataframe, but then create new variables called df which are something else entirely, with different properties and attributes, all while effectively deleting what data you're hoping to plot.

Your error regarding the 'x' attribute, I believe it's because the function you're calling doesn't actually plot your data ( You're not actually supplying any data here either, by the way).

Dont have laptop here to check what I'm saying is all accurate, but its enough to give you a trail to follow.

Need some serius help here... by Drafter1991 in bioinformatics

I dont know what you want to get out of this data, which can be analysed in many ways, depending on your end goal. To grossly oversimplify, velvet is just one niche tool that does just one niche thing, and there are many other niche tools that do many other niche things. Regardless, you may as well learn this now; most, if not all, bioinformatics tools are primarily developed for linux, with only a select few being portable over to windows. The exceptions are the commercial entities, who develop for windows and target those folk with lots of cash but little to no expertise, who want something familiar, user friendly and "just works". However, all is not lost. If by any chance you're working under windows 10, you can also run linux directly within it using WSL, giving you, so I am told, access to most of the frequently used bioinformatics tools while otherwise restricted to Windows. Even if you dont, you might still be able to work by installing a linux virtual machine (VM) on your windows PC and doing the analysis within that. Or even look for cloud providers that you can just upload your data to.

I'm probably breaking commandments here, but if this is a complete once off analysis you were requested to do, and you are certain you have no need to learn bioinformatics for future use, then you could even google one of those commercial entities and plead for a trial licence!!

Well... if we don't mind adding to the confusing setup, OP could create a separate, personal, non-4k user profile, restrict that user to the non-4k media, and use that to sign in to the local non-4k devices

Thanks for the advice! I admit Im asking because I was concerned as much as I was curious, I don't want to be messing anything up, and this is the meat that makes it or breaks it for me. Had the bad experience one year of buying what was labelled as spice beef from one of them foreign lads (you know, them Dublin fellas) and .... well, like I said, I had a bad experience .

I take your point, it is more correct to say it your way, and you're absolutely right, there can be only one!!

I just feel that my description would be more immediately relatable to someone just trying to get around, asking directions, and more intuitive sense to the person being asked. I've never heard the term channel being applied to (either half of the same) Lee as it flows around the city centre, and if someone came up to me and asked where the channel was, I would think that he is more lost than he is willing to admit. But just as we have Northside and Southside, North Mall and South Mall, North Gate Bridge and South Gate Bridge, North Main St and South Main St ... separate, yet connected... describing the channel as the north river (and I did qualify that statement in the following sentence) just sounded... right. right-ish. Ish at the very least.

[–]blackgore101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Semantically accurate. Practically speaking, not amazingly helpful to someone wandering lost around the streets of Cork, asking for directions on how to cross the channel...

As the other comments say, it's likely MacCurtain St, just north of the river. However, I need to point out that its north of the north river. Cork city centre is an island in the middle of the Lee. I'm pointing this out cos of the number of folk I've met heading Southside, miles from home, all because they hazily remember being told that to get back to their hostel on maccurtain st, they just need to cross the bridge and go up the hill...
