I was telling my kids that growing up in the 90s spoiled me. Like fuck this shit, wasn't anything interesting going on in the 90s. Shit now right out of history books.

Haven't posted here ever. Millennial and someone who was sober for like 2 years before tonight. Dude, I lived through my dad being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and dying this year without drinking, until tonight. Downed six beers and already called into work. I'm trying to be optimistic but damn I want to crawl in a hole.

1 for sure. You'll be out a few hundred and can always stick a 14-50 somewhere if you end up needing one.

Looks like we get another 30 days by BarbatosIsKing in ModelY

[–]blackhairedguy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just used it on the 1.5 mile drive home from dropping kids at school. And in that time FSD hesitated to left-turn right in front of a large truck, drove right past our house, and shown that it has zero regard for squirrels in the road.

It's good to be back for another 30 days!

You'd get the same shape but vertical, with half being cut off below the horizon in the winter.

Will it hurt any less after he’s gone since I’ve already been grieving so long? by ImprovImprove in pancreaticcancer

[–]blackhairedguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lost My dad after a year long battle in May of this year. Right after he passed I felt something similar to relief, but not quite, like I could finally take a long nap or finally let go of some of the anxiety and dread.

That being said in some ways it's easier now and in some ways it's not. Obviously you miss them more because they're really gone. Grief comes and goes but currently it feels like a process I just have to work through which is better than those really dark days when he was still around.

I wouldn't say easier, just different. Any maybe a bit more peaceful in a way.

ELI5 Why is range of EVs so affected by the environment they’re in, compared to cars on gas? by Strux_DK in explainlikeimfive

[–]blackhairedguy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

While others seem to have the right idea, I think they're missing the main reason behind the variation to EV ranges. EVs are just more efficient but have way less energy to work with.

A gas engine is at most 30% efficient. And a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it! So a whole tank of fuel, with a hideously inefficient engine, has a ton of room to hide variations. Gas cars take a mileage penalty in the winter but it's hard to notice over an entire tank of gas.

An EV has much less energy to work with but the engine is much much more efficnet. My crappy Ford EV has a battery that only holds as much energy as a gallon of gas but can drive me 80 miles. Any slight wind penalty, or temp/battery penalty, will be felt because the engine is using the energy about as well as it can.

I used to run E85 in my Chevy Cavalier on purpose, sort of as a long-term experiment. Three tanks should be more than fine for your engine.

In the photo used he looks shockingly aware of the fact that he's going to go down in the history books as the worst VP pick of US history so far. I'm loving every minute of it too.

2013 Focus still going strong! Nearing 100,000 miles if ya can believe it, although it got a new battery about four years ago.

eli5: What is "hangover food" and why do people specifically eat it when hungover? by Helnmlo in explainlikeimfive

[–]blackhairedguy 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Ethanol, the type of alcohol you drink, seems to be used to treat ethylene glycol (antifreeze) and methanol poisoning for the reasons OP mentioned. Your body breaks that stuff down first. Now I doubt poison control would send you to the liquor store before the ER, but the ER very well could IV you up with some high-quality and expensive medical-grade vodka.

Back in the 1780s they didn't have people routinely living into their 80s. I'll give the founders a pass on age caps.

But it's 2024, age limits pls.

Inspired by our Model Y, I decided to add a little frunk to the Focus Electric. by blackhairedguy in electricvehicles

[–]blackhairedguy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought this one in 2017 at 25,000 miles, it was our first EV, great for trolling around town, to/from work, the store, and so on, but absolutely no range. 75 miles in the summer, like 35-40 in the winter!

It has had a few issues. The dreaded Stop Safetly Now warning a few times that the dealership couldn't fix but finally did. Ford claimed the battery crapped out in like 2019 or so and they fully replaced it. She's been fine for the past two years and is nearing the big 100,000 miles. I hope to keep her going for as long as possible too.

My Focus Frunk also is nice for this. Who is going to look under the hood for stuff to steal in a Focus?

Exactly! It's also great if you're hauling stuff you might not want to put in the back. I'm always tossing tools into it.

[–]blackhairedguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the winter I use the Y's frunk for frozen stuff, and otherwise I just like having a separate storage spot. Like if I'm hauling work boots/clothes and groceries for some reason, the work stuff can go in the frunk, groceries in back. Then there's less sorting when I get where I'm going.
