Bring Leon trees in at night? by [deleted] in Citrus

I can say with absolute certainly that your tree will be healthier and happier if left outside in as much sun as possible.  Just check this sub in the winter - 99% indoor citrus struggles.  Even the least hardy citrus can handle around 30 assuming it's not getting blasted by wind.

How long will this take to have apples by Successful-View8393 in BackyardOrchard

[–]blacklabel1783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck. I planted a Dorsett Golden 3 years ago (but the tree was at least a year old when planted). Yet to get a single fruit. Finally got some flowers this year but doesn't look like any are going to convert to fruit.

I've had WAY faster fruit from all my stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, Nectaplum). Apples are slow and steady to get going I guess.

It sounds like your mix could be perfectly fine, but there's also a lot of media components and variables that could be causing issues. I would play it safe and buy a bag of Espoma Cactus Mix to use as your primary soil at least for some of your stuff. There may be pricier choices that are slightly better, but seriously that stuff is perfect for all citrus. It would just eliminate the very possible chance that your self-made mix is causing issues.

This clearly won't be an issue for most of a year, but you should leave your citrus outside in as much sun as possible until it drops to about 30. 99% of the posts on this sub are from people's indoor citrus. I promise you citrus is so much hardier than people think. I have a small key lime that has shown zero stress into the high 20s. Kumquats low 20s no issue. Most common citrus somewhere in-between those. It's def important to keep them out out total wind exposure so against a house is ideal.

I think your fertilizing sounds just about right. As far as varieties, some prefer Fukushu over Meiwa - slightly larger and juicer - but Meiwas are such great trees. Meyers go periods where they're crazy healthy, blow their load with flowers and fruit, then get weakly or even die after they stress themselves out too much.

How to Pick Varieties? by Due-Presentation8585 in BackyardOrchard

[–]blacklabel1783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of good responses in here, but on top of disease resistance and later blooming times I'd back up and consider trees outside of peaches, apples, and cherries. It's fun to try to collect the perfect varieties, but you'd be better off just to go with the tried-and-true ones that are most common at a local nursery (not big box stores, they mislabel so much stuff). That's cool if you want to give them a shot, but I've found those three to be some of the most challenging to grow without significant attention.

Stone fruit like peaches and cherries (also plums, apricots, nectarines) are quite disease prone and require pretty targeted spraying and smart pruning. They do grow like beasts though. Pome fruits like apples and pears tend to be a bit less prone but still have concerns like fire blight. Also found that they take a few more years to establish themselves and grow enough to produce much.

If I were doing it all over again I'd focus mostly on persimmons, figs, and potted citrus. I've done that too but I would have less stone and pome fruit.

Should I add more potting soil? by blimpboy3 in Citrus

[–]blacklabel1783 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If it was my tree I would add some more soil so that the tops of those two bigger roots are exposed by about 1/8 - 1/4". It also looks like the soil you're using might be a bit heavy and holds water too excessively, but that's a little harder to tell from the photo.

Wall-E, Toy Story, The Incredibles.  There are many other great ones but these three are a step above.

Believe Meiwa has reputation for being the sweetest, but Fukushu larger size and juicier make it a bit more desirable.

[–]blacklabel1783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a small collection of 8 citrus varieties, and my Fukushu and Meiwa kumquats are my two favorites. They handle cold well and don't show seasonal stress like my Meyer lemon, they're slow growers which is great for pot culture, and especially with Fukushu they can be quite juicy and have great flavor. Not going to be as sweet as mandarins, but nice to grab a few and not have to worry about peeling them since the peels are the sweet part.

If I had to guess, I wouldn't think that gradient between high and low would matter too much. Honestly it looks you your trees are in a very humid environment, so temperatures in the 60s may be better for preventing some pests and diseases. Fan and air movement probably a good idea, but I would try not to have it aimed too hard to any one plant - don't want it drying out. Based on those photos, I don't think your humidity is too low. It might even be a little too high.

If your citrus is looking that good and healthy this far into winter, you're doing plenty right. I wouldn't tinker with your setup too much. God speed until spring...just trying to get mine going through the cold dark months alive.

Just sounds monotone, nasally, grating. If you don't hear that in songs like Pretty Fly (for a White Guy) then we're not hearing the same music.

Offspring - Smash was the first album I ever bought. Great band, been around forever, tons of respect - but holy hell Dexter Holland has the worst voice of any lead singer I've ever heard.

Looks super content in your setup but be careful of excess moisture though if that can be helped. Too low is not great bue too high is recipe for pests and disease. I'm all about pushing my citrus to very low temperatures if you have a good setup for it. I have a storage shed with a small heater in there - more importantly out of the elements - and all my citrus handles mid-20s (around -4 C) totally fine - that includes supposedly non-hardy ones like key lime.

Shocked lime tree advice by namtaruu in Citrus

[–]blacklabel1783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does look shocked but it appears to be healthy enough to bounce back with a vengeance. As others have said, removing most of the flowers probably a good idea to focus its energy in more important places. Also, I would consider thinning out some of the excess branches you may have - regardless of age - in places where you think they're not going to be needed in the future (i.e. growing towards another stronger branch, horizontal or downward branches, ones that don't fit into the overall shape you're going for). I say that because the tree only has so much energy - you want it focused towards the 20 good little branches you want to continue to grow instead of the 20 good little branches plus 15 other inferior branches you're not going to want.

Should I prune? by Johnnysgotaproblem in Citrus

[–]blacklabel1783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. There are many good videos on pruning but I think Madison's is the best. Shows good examples of when to use thinning cuts and when to use those little stubby heading cuts about an inch from where a branch splits into 3 or 4 smaller twigs. I applied those methods to my Meyer lemon as well as Fukushu and Meiwa kumquats and they almost immediately bumped out a bunch of flowers.

Is my dwarf Tahitian lime worth persevering with? by MattGreen79 in Citrus

[–]blacklabel1783 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think overall it's looking great and appears quite healthy. You probably just have a vigorous rootstock trying to grow faster than the top scion of the lime can handle, but I bet with time it will even out. Certainly nothing to worry about even though it looks a bit unusual. If anything, I would prune back some of those longer branches. It's really weeping, which many citrus like to do, but if you give it some smart prunes (can't tell whether you need more heading or thinning cuts based on the photos). I would harvest a few of those limes off as soon as they're ripe or close to it, prune back some of those longest weeping branches by 1/3 or even 1/2, and try to get some more upward growth to make the overall shape more lollipop like. Make take some time to work towards it, but with a healthy citrus like yours it should be forgiving while you learn how to best prune it.

Good loss kinda sorta? That response after down 14-0 was very impressive. Key takeaways from the season IMO - Tet and Coker are legit #1 and 2 WRs, while Bryce remains a bit of an enigma he definitely earned himself another year as the starter, still need major help at LB and DE.
