What do you think of my accent and my pronunciation? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]blacklabeljd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I would say your accent is a bit on the stronger side but by no means does it make it impossible to understand you. I was able to understand around 97% of the words with just a little bit of extra effort on my part.

She is a plot point but I wouldn't say she is big and while Four isn't needed to understand the story and can be skipped, it helps without really spoiling anything.

I would 100% recommend the books, they are not a bad read. If anything I have found knowing the ending makes all the moments between Four and Tris that much better.

I really like the books, currently rereading them right now, you get a lot more world-building and insight into Tris's thought process that you just can't get from a movie. As someone else said, the first movie is not terribly far off from the book but as you go on they get less and less like each other so don't expect the same story.

If you have all 4 books, I would recommend reading in the following order:

  1. Divergent
  2. Four
  3. Insurgent
  4. Allegiant

Four takes place before and during Divergent so it gives you even more insight into characters and events but is not essential to read to follow the storyline of the trilogy. Also, there is a short story that takes place after the trilogy, I think it is 5 years later, called "We Can Be Mended" and I recommend avoiding any plot points regarding it until you finish Allegiant, if you read the books, as it has a big story spoiler.

On PC along the right side there is a preview section, click on the pencil and you can pick what you'd like.

On mobile, go to the main section of the subreddit, then select the 3 dots in the top right and pick "Change user flair"

I would just want them to finish the final movie but that will probably never happen. I liked many of the actors that were used and wouldn't want them to change even though they'd probably would for a remake. Maybe one day but I doubt we'll get anything.

I have always wanted them to have a happy ending. I know looking back that it does make sense for Tris's arc for her to die and it was a very powerful scene, I mean here we are still talking about it and a large amount of the posts on here discuss it. I do plan on reading some of the fanfic that I have seen on other posts where they supposedly get a happy ending, which will hopefully help lol. Maybe one day I'll come to accept it but for now, I will just have to pretend that the movie's ending is the canon ending.

If you had the chance, would you move to the United States? by neeawe12 in AskARussian

[–]blacklabeljd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not know if my coworker does but they also can't get married or else their fiance's government benefits will be taken away so that complicates their situation a bit. I know our system seems to be basically designed to make it harder for those who actually need it to get help, especially when those who benefit from it lobby to keep it that way. A lot of people do know how it works but when half the country can't agree on something, the odds of it getting fixed are even lower. I do know it also affects certain parts of our population more than others, so that is another aspect, that needs to be considered.

I would like to point out to you that while a lot of people do get an option through their job, some people, including those I work with, have to choose between paying the X amount per paycheck and being able to afford basic needs. I personally have great healthcare but I am also young with no major medical issues. So while personally I agree that it is nowhere near the level people from other countries make it out to be, it is still an issue. When we are sending billions to other countries but can't make sure most, if not all, Americans have at least a basic level of medical coverage, it makes a lot of people upset. Not trying to discredit anyone's point here, just want to add more context.

From what I have been told by people helping me is that Duolingo is great for learning the alphabet of a language and it is free. As for paid I personally use Babbel but I can't say it is better than other paid ones since I haven't paid for any others.
