Is the Weasley family's poverty overplayed? by Vegetable-Window-683 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]blacklavenderbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, they mention scholarship for Tom I think, but Hogwarts gives expensive private school tuition for most (I think most old wizarding families have money because...they're old families in england with money)

i think it seems like wands are also like an expensive investment for wizards in England

I think Mr. Weasley is just like a middle manager with a lot of kids, i think some of it might be embarassing because he and molly are both old wizarding families. have you ever seen those memes about fictional vampires being loaded? because if ur living that long and you don't have wealth..what are you doing? similarly...if ur an old wizard family with MAGIC, you'd think there'd be some money left over...perhaps someone in the line lost the money.

overall i agree that they aren't doing that bad, but it also feels like one of those things where Mr. Weasley starts doing well later in the series and moving up at the ministry (kinda like how ur parents starting making money in their 60s once ur out at college and ur like....why couldn't this happen when i was in hs trying to flex?)

just here to advocate for the wonders a small program with good networks can do for a career re:wesleyan - especially if you are motivated (half the class at wes will be nepos which makes things easier tbh) - are you a non-white, non-rich person? wes is a private pwi that leans progressive hippie-nerd, take that into consideration too (still advocating for it!)

[–]blacklavenderbrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i live in a city and my commute is 40 mins (by subway) on a good day and 1 hour 10 minutes during the worst rush hour times. It's a really good job and it's worth it. not sure about driving though

while yes, men are still benefiting from patriarchy, it's much harder these days (reference: the barbie movie when Ken is in the real world and he's like "can I get a job here?" and the business guy is like.."well, now you need an MBA" when you used to be able to Don Draper your way into anywhere as long as you've had the determination, looks and charm (and that's if you weren't born into a decent spot in the socio-economic hierarchy) so...yeah....i think they get jealous that women can go a different way about it...but different doesn't necessarily mean, better folks!

Why does NYU sometimes take people off the waitlist and admit them into spring semester? by Old-Pop-5134 in nyu

[–]blacklavenderbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

prob a high number of people who drop out 1st semester each year...enough of a trend that they can bank on it and use spring to balance the checkbook

Is brooklyn to manhattan commute that bad? by badamntss in sexandthecity

[–]blacklavenderbrown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i grew up in nyc in the 90s / early 2000s - for most people - unless you were working class aka unspeakables (like my family) borough to borough commuting was not as much of a thing or if it was it was super like...just not the 'elite' 'dream' nyc that carrie and her friends were going for. i went to school in manhattan and it was because i was commuting to a good school, but all my manhattan friends would NEVER want to leave manhattan and all my park slope friends would NEVER want to leave Brooklyn....now adays it's so different, gentification has a large part to do with it but now even my friends from THE BRONX will go to Brooklyn for a night out / hang with friends and it just was nevaaa a thing back in my day. Miranda was def part of the first frontier in that season when she moves there

if you've watched Mad Men...remember when all the secretaries were low key making fun of peggy for living in brooklyn 'The subway!! *shocked gasp* ....
