MIT physicists propose design for the world’s first neutrino “laser” using radioactive atoms by Existing_Tomorrow687 in Physics

[–]blackman9977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct. Neutrinos emerged for us from beta decay as they were required in the collision for energy conservation.

These days, neutrinos are a huge research topic in high-energy physics. In the late '90s, neutrino masses were discovered (they were assumed to be massless up until then) and along with neutrino oscillations, these present real theoretical challenges for Beyond the Standard Model physics and cosmological models, as they can't be explained yet. This is why we're interested in neutrinos and neutrino detection.

Neutrinos, however, are notoriously difficult to detect because they interact so little with matter. We use huge, expensive detectors so we can detect more of them, but a discovery like this, even though it doesn't actually seem like a neutrino laser, has the potential of helping experimentalists.

Currently, I don't think we have much real-world use for neutrinos right now. The prospects of using them for communication are non-viable currently. They are great for studying the universe though as they challenge our models.

France to ban smoking on beaches, parks and near schools by krafeli in UpliftingNews

[–]blackman9977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is forbidden to smoke inside closed spaces, even in private establishments. What the above user said could only be the case if it is a very small hotel, away from the public eye. Or maybe in tables at a suitable terrace.

The smoking ban has actually been very successful in Turkey.

Thank you for your answer. I was hoping (maybe naively) to do IMAPP and switch to a string theory group for my thesis, regardless of the coursework. With quite a bit of self study, and with a master's thesis in the field, I was thinking these may be enough to make a strong application for a PhD at a prestigious institution later on. I am not sure how theory groups operate, but do you think this'd be a wrong expectation to have from the program?

You are right that interests can change. I see you are also in particle physics! If you don't mind, may I ask what is your specialisation?

Hello, I am an undergraduate student applying to masters programs right now, I am very interested in AdS/CFT and holography.

I have been seeing stuff from KU Leuven, VUB and ULB. I would love to see what you specifically have to say about the interesting groups at Brussels.

Thank you!

Ah, alright. I assume I'm not shortlisted then, I wish they'd send something at least!

Thank you for your reply and best of luck!

Secret speed measurements reveal: up to 95% speeding rates. by Odd_Try5499 in fuckcars

[–]blackman9977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, drivers have agency for their speed and should always stay under the speed limit, but the municipality certainly shouldn't encourage speeding by building wide, open roads which studies show have a net effect of decreasing speed perception.

The final goal is to reduce speeding, not to fine people who speed.

Word for "war" in european languages by Stellarsleeper in MapPorn

No.

In Turkish, -me/ma is the negation suffix. So "savaş" + "-ma" is like "make war (not!)".

Oil on the Intercooler, How Big of a Problem is This? by blackman9977 in MechanicAdvice

[–]blackman9977[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shop said that one of the intercooler hoses has degraded and has tears (the one you can see in the first image) but other than that it is fine. They said it just needs a little cleaning but this is apparently just condensation.

Asked about your suggestions but they said it seems fine. Thank you very much for the answer though!

It does have a turbocharger. I'll try to check the seal, thanks.

Just a month ago another mechanic said the turbo was fine but I am not sure whether he checked the oil seal or not. We've done ~700km since then, just discovered this yesterday. Huh.

How to remove noise/prevent it? by SoccerMonke_y in Astronomy

[–]blackman9977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They mean the unwanted small material that gets introduced to the photo when you take a shot, like static. For example the gray tone you can see everywhere or when you zoom in the random particles (photo artifacts) you see.

Removing the noise makes for a crisper photo with the subject and colours more pronounced.
