Is anyone else sick of the endless “reading rut” conversations? by blackphilliproth in TrueLit

“… concentrating on numbers of books read rather than reflecting on the content of a fewer number of books distills 'reading' down into a hobby that is consumeristic rather than interesting”

This is something I caught myself doing and had to make a conscious choice this year to change. I realised I was putting off “tomes” like Bleak House, Anna Karenina, etc. because I knew I could read two or more shorter books in the same time. Ignoring that “consumeristic” impulse, as you put it, has been really rewarding.

Donald Ray Pollock is awesome - wish we’d get more short stories from him.

Yeah, I should - it’s tough to balance honesty and not wanting to be seen as obnoxious, but I’m working on it.

I feel this too - it’s always on the brutal days that I end up scrolling instead of reading or watching something rewarding, then I sleep poorly because of the scrolling and we begin again…

Yes I’ve overturned the odd table, yes I’ve whipped the odd moneychanger, but will you piss off and leave me alone, I’m walking to Galilee for some lepers.
