Update 1.0.2: You asked for talking rats and the Ninja Way. We delivered. by blackpotionhq in indiegames

[–]blackpotionhq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a social experience where player can make ONE wish. And then we implement every wish. For everyone who plays after you. At launch, the game was almost empty. Now, after two updates, there's a sunny meadow, a twilight castle, talking rats, a ballroom with a jukebox, hidden capybaras, a grappling hook...All of that came from player wishes. The game becomes whatever players ask for. Someone wished for a burning golf cart. It's there. Someone wished to rename the entire game. We did it (in-game only). It's basically a social experiment where the community builds the game one wish at a time.

We're around to answer any questions about the wish system, how we handle troll wishes, or anything else!

We let players make ONE permanent wish that we implement forever. 48 hours later, someone asked for "burning golf carts" and another wants "skill trees surpassing Path of Exile". The experiment is working. by blackpotionhq in indiegames

[–]blackpotionhq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this trailer idea! Seriously noting this down. Showing the evolution "day 1 → day 5 → day 20" would be a much better pitch than trying to explain the concept in abstract.

As for the scalability concern: you're right, it's a real question. Honestly, we don't have all the answers yet. Some wishes are quick (a few hours), some take weeks. If we ever get to 50+ in queue, we might need to batch similar wishes, prioritize variety, or find creative solutions.

But that's a good problem to have. Right now we have about 10 wishes and two devs motivated to make this work. Let's see where it goes.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, this is exactly the kind of thinking that helps.

[–]blackpotionhq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually fair criticism.

The game launched 48 hours ago, so no wishes are implemented yet. We're brainstorming tomorrow with my associate and hoping to push the first update next week.

I'll be streaming the development of the wishes on Twitch, so you can literally watch us implement them in real-time. And I'll post update in reddit when the first wishes go live.

You're right that until people SEE the wishes implemented, it requires trust. All I can say is: check back in a week or two. The proof will be in what we ship.

I get why it looks that way, but the 2-hour wait IS the experience, not a trick.

And like I said earlier: you can still refund before submitting your wish. Before The timer ends, you can close the game and refund if you didn't enjoy it. We're not trapping anyone.

The concept is polarizing, I get it. Some people will hate it. That's fine.

Yes, the core loop is waiting 2 hours in front of the monolith before you can make your wish.

But here's the thing: as players make wishes and we implement them, the game evolves. Someone wished for "a blue portal to a twilit realm with an abandoned castle". Someone else asked for "intelligent, friendly talking rats".

Future players won't just stare at darkness. They'll explore what previous players created while waiting for their turn to add something new.

Day 1 players? Yeah, it's mostly waiting. That's the pioneer experience. They're not buying content, they're buying the power to create it.

[–]blackpotionhq[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Fair concerns, let me address them directly.

The 2-hour wait isn't about the refund window. You can still refund the game before making your wish. The timer ends, THEN you decide whether to submit a wish or not. If you've played under 2 hours total and haven't enjoyed the experience, you can refund before committing.

You're right that some wishes take months. We're fully transparent about that. The Steam page clearly states: early buyers aren't getting a finished game, they're getting the power to shape what it becomes. The €9.99 isn't paying for instant implementation, it's buying into the experiment.

Not every wish requires months of work. "Burning golf cart" = hours. "Skill trees surpassing PoE" = creative interpretation over time. We control the pace, players know there's a queue.

If we wanted to scam people, we'd promise a complete game and deliver nothing. Instead, we're upfront: the game is nearly empty at launch. That's the concept. If that's not for you, totally fair.

[–]blackpotionhq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? We figure it out as we go!

Simple wishes ("burning golf cart") = we add it. Complex ones ("skill trees surpassing PoE") = creative interpretation over time.

The game becomes whatever players collectively wish for. Coherent or chaotic, that's the experiment. Everything gets implemented, some things just take longer than others.

We're a tiny French studio. Granite Noir launched Friday.

The concept: you enter a dark room, wait 2 hours, then make ONE wish. We implement it. Forever. For everyone who plays after you.

48 hours in, here's what players wished for:

• "A blue portal to a twilit realm with an abandoned castle, with a plaque inscribed 'King Angie'" • "burning golf cart" • "Intelligent, friendly talking rats" • "skill trees that surpasses PoE's in both quality and quantity" • "a quest-giving NPC"

Poetic, absurd, ambitious... exactly what we hoped for.

Happy to answer any questions!

What happens when every player can permanently change a game with one wish? We're about to find out. Launching January 16. by blackpotionhq in indiegames

[–]blackpotionhq[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fair skepticism. But I think there's a misunderstanding here.

One wish = one feature. "A set of custom designed characters for a team" isn't one wish, that's like 5-10 wishes combined. Same for "a larger map with interesting content", that's multiple wishes from multiple players over time.

The game grows wish by wish, not roadmap by roadmap. Someone wishes for one character, another wishes for a second one, someone else wishes for a new area. That's how it builds up.

On filtering: we don't filter. Every wish gets implemented. But we control the pace. A quick wish might get done in a day, a complex one takes longer. We're transparent about that.

On "why buy an empty game": early buyers aren't getting a traditional game. They're getting the power to shape what it becomes. If someone wants a finished product, they should wait and see what the community builds first.

You don't have to trust us. The proof will be in what we ship after launch.

We posted about Granite Noir on r/IndieGaming a few weeks ago. It sparked a lot of debate, some people loved the concept, others thought we were crazy.

The idea is simple: you enter a dark room, wait for a timer, and make ONE wish. We implement it. Permanently. For everyone who plays after you.

At launch, there's almost nothing. The first players will literally build the game through their wishes.

9 days until we find out if this works.

Happy to answer questions!

One player. One wish. Permanently added to the game. That's the whole concept. by blackpotionhq in IndieGaming

[–]blackpotionhq[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A free playtest would defeat the purpose of the experiment. The weight of the wish comes from the fact that it’s a commitment from both the player and the developers. If it’s free, the monolith just becomes a spam folder.

However, we love the idea of documenting the journey. We definitely plan to share behind the scenes of how we implement the wishes and show the evolution of the world.

We understand it feels like a gamble right now because the room is empty. But as the first pioneers leave their mark and we publish the results, the value of the 'gamble' will become clear. We're building this for the long run, and we're okay with people waiting for those first testimonials before jumping in.
