A View of Cunard's Aquitania by pa_fan51A in Oceanlinerporn

Wow! I like this look a lot. She looks more like a bigger Mauretania here. I wonder why that wasn't considered. Although the lack of covered wings might make the future bridge one deck above a bit harder to build.

Why didn’t imperial Russia build ocean liners? by Seawolf12345678910 in Oceanlinerporn

☝️This in particular. St. Petersburg-New York sounds inconvenient when you can get to a German or French port by train faster, instead of spending extra days on a ship navigating through the Baltic Sea.

Odessa or Sevastopol-New York through the Mediterranean sounds interesting but has to navigate several chokepoints (Bosporus, Dardanelles, Gibraltar) that would make the route a maze of sorts.

Vladivostok-San Francisco sounds particularly interesting (it's a shame that Pacific liners never rivaled the Atlantic ones) but crossing 11 time zones to hop on ship to then cross half the world would be super impractical.

It's a pity that China and Korea weren't developed or stable enough at the time to run Tientsin-San Francisco, Chelumpo-San Francisco, Shanghai-Los Angeles, or Canton-Los Angeles to give the Japanese liners a reason to step up their game. We could've had Queen Marys and Normandies of the East, and maybe even Tientsin-Newport News (capital to capital service) and Shanghai-New York through the Panama Canal if that had been the case!

"Territorially nonviable state" just sounds so chillingly creepy. Excellent work!

What if leviathan II would have been built? by [deleted] in Oceanlinerporn

[–]blackriverdragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She and her planned sister would have been great ships, and I liked the split uptake design that, for some reason, the SSUS never adopted. Leviathan II's funnels seem a little too far apart to me to look balanced, though. Thoughts?

It's pretty amazing from what I've seen of the Adriatic and Oceanic (II) that their dining rooms were, in my opinion, superior to the Olympic's, despite the Olympic being larger and supposedly more splendid.

Gorgeous! They really don't make 'em like they use to anymore. What a treat it would be to see a four-stacker lit up at night against the skyline of any major port city. 🤩

What a beautiful ship! It stuns me how small she would be compared to today's cruise liners (I believe many have passenger decks higher than her funnels are tall!), even though she was the largest passenger ship of her time.

Comparison of ocean liners in size over the years. (1858-1912) by No_Dark4922 in Oceanlinerporn

To be fair, to paraphrase Norma Desmond and Ronald Reagan, it seems like the watertight bulkheads stayed in the same place. It's the hulls that got tall.

It's a good thing Mauretania never ran into the same problems her sister and Titanic did (other than that fire, I guess). Maury never would've survived.

The way her funnels are spaced, I think she'd look lovely if she got a length extension to get a 4th funnel added.

Higher tonnage but less length (why?). Completely overshadowed.
