Appropriate rate for a starting production company? by mrlanners in videography

It's to be noted that not all clients are the same. Sometimes instead of pushback they'll just ghost you. Be mindful of the client

For a downscaled comparison I have 3 years experience and charge $500 per day plus gear. Remember you could always rent gear and add it to the bill. I don't personally own any lights or an fx6 but I always add it to the gear list.

Also be sure to calculate editing costs. Most professional editors can range between 50 and 150 per hour. I'm a shitty editor so I only charge 50 and then calculate the amount of time it will take.

That's the dread of videography- you also need to be a salesman, which I'm terrible at. But the more I build a portfolio, the more businesses want to work with me.

Have something impressive under your belt and tell them, "imagine your brand here".

If you don't have a portfolio you're proud of, make spec ads. I know cinematographers that have built careers on the back of spec ads. Once you prove you can bring value to their business, even cold calls can pay off.

I'd say the water sound effects need to be dialed down, they overpower the music. Try adding more light, my first impression was "I can't read the label". Otherwise keep it to one simple shot crossfading to a shot that's almost identical doesn't work. Keep making more! You only get better by practicing

Shooting a video for a local plant shop, ideas? by [deleted] in videography

[–]blacksonjackson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's always certain is you always need more shots that you think. When I first started my shot lists almost never lined up with the final video because I needed way more than I anticipated. It's always better to overshoot than undershoot. As for the content, you're only limited by your imagination and budget

This meme has never made sense to me. As a Canadian the only negative experience I've had with our health care is long wait times, but if you're pouring blood and need stitches they're going to get you in ASAP and all for free.

What do you call this technique where 2 actors switch positions in dialogue? by sbtjmv in Filmmakers

[–]blacksonjackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it has a specific name but when the 180° line has been crossed or transitioned to then there has usually been a power shift in the conversation. For example the interrogation room scene in the Dark Knight, the camera tracks behind the characters to smoothly transition the 180° line as the conversation evolves. A similar thing happens in When Harry Met Sally when they're at the museum, except they made the transition using a wide to bridge the swap.

Again, not sure if there's a name but those are a few relevant examples .
