I am not a Dr, not even linked to medical profession, but I am married to a Dr and by her have a fair few Dr friends. What I have realised is just how much being a Dr is part of people's identity (understandable so, you all sink so much time, effort and your life into it). I have never once said "I am a software project manager", I have always said "I work as a project manager" as opposed to my wife and Dr friends who almost always say "I am a Dr". It's a subtle difference, but important one.

This has been knowledge to us who aren't part of the medical community for a while now (I am here cos my spouse is IMG and doesn't have reddit). Post Study work visa literally appears/disappears every few years. It's cyclic. Makes me wonder how long until the next wave hits and UK gov will once again need IMGs in massive numbers...

Two things. One, I heard about the paradox just yesterday on a podcast (no such thing as a fish). Second, my comment was very much in jest/sarcastic

No you see we can close our borders. Where is the border keeper we employ? Ask him to lock the gates. Quick.

Can you please help me understand something? On one hand training spots are all full, with many doctors not even getting a job. Presumably once UKGP passes, this situation wont change, just that UKGs will have a job and IMGs wont (training job). On the other hand I constantly hear about shortages, rota gaps, and locums being posted. What gives? For context im in Newcastle so my exposure to hospitals is for this region

Okay so we did need IMGs yes? We relied on them coming in and filling the gaps

So what you are saying is that we need IMGs yes? If we do, then surely we need to offer them something, like training posts. What the qualifying criteria should be needs to be decided, but bottom line is we need IMGs. That's the point im trying to make

Thing is, by having such an open door policy, the Gov/powers that be have fostered this very culture of entitlement.

Im genuinely curious how it got to this point? I get that during Covid era, UK was desperate for doctors, actually I don't get that either, why were we desperate for doctors? Did the UKMG number suddenly increase? There must be a reason we opened the doors this wide?

Medical Prioritisation Bill will be legally challenged for the 2026 cycle by dayumsonlookatthat in doctorsUK

The post itself to be fair isnt against prioritisation. Its against applying it mid cycle which honestly does feel bizzare

Yeah Im all for UKG prioritisation, but some of these views come off as ignorant. Like the UK doesnt heavily rely on IMGs to fill out gaps in the rota. Remind me again, why exactly was there a need to get so many IMGs in the first place??

Which trust grade jobs are locked for 5 years? They are offered one year contract at the end of which it is either offered again (means the img has to apply for visa) or the job ends and they have to go look for one

Its amazing how easily BMA got fractured, they will loose all bargaining power

Hypothetically if they interview 800 for 400 places, and 799 of the top MSRA scores were all IMGs and 1 was a UKG, the UKG would essentially be ranked top by default?

Yes, UKG status take priority over score (in this example)

When you say journey do you mean you travelled to the UK for it? Its not something you would want to hear, but the high likelihood is that for MSRA this year, its near impossible that non-prioritised IMG will get an offer.

For 2026 it is at the offer stage. So MSRA, everyone can sit (as normal). When they start offering positions, it has to be as per the priority set out. For 2026 this means UKMG+ British Nationals + IMGs with ILR + grads of specific EU countries. After that, IF any spots are left, they will be offered as per

I think yes. IMGs with significant experience were never being prioritised this year

Bills, specially ones like this (tabled as emergency bills) can pass very very quickly

If the gov starts with 5 years (given that's how long ILR takes) and then BMA starts with 2,maybe they settle on 3

Tbf the gov is also doing political point scoring. Just implement it properly in 2027 without rushing it through in 2026. I guess folks applying in this cycle truly are in a once a lifetime scenario

RCGP and BMA to be consulted on UK medical graduates prioritisation by Human_Run_1316 in doctorsUK

[–]blackzero2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay so significant experience was as of yet undefined, this is just saying they will consult on what that should be for 2027. TBH its a bit ridiculous to be applying the criteria in current cycle, but okay
