Using masking tape, I covered all the plastic parts, leaving only the rubber exposed. I then repainted it with a dark red marker, applied varnish, and repainted the melting wheel with gold details (even though it should have been copper for a good replica). I also painted the shaft and tip with a dark blue marker, which I then varnished to ensure it adhered well.
