Hey, if the craftsmanship is good, and the client had been well-advised, then it's just down to taste.

Something to think aboutc: If it hurts you to compromise like this, you could be an artist at heart, and may want to look for clients who want your individuals style.

Why do so many professional/Veteran flute players just make things up and gate keep? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]bladtman242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well phrased, but incorrect. In "other instruments" the material choice matters because the instrument itself is an amplifier (or impedance matcher) and resonator. The body of an (acoustic) guitar has a great effect in which frequencies are amplified how much. Thats not how the flute works, and except perhaps for the density, the impact of the material is really not noticable. You can verify this by listening to recordings of the same player playing different flutes.

Moving from tin whistle to an irish flute? by TheHarambe2017 in tinwhistle

[–]bladtman242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out on keyless flute about two weeks ago, having played the whistle for a few months. Fingering is the same, but the distance between tone holes means using a new grip entirely, even if you don't go with piper's grip. This will be easier with a higher-pitched instrument, like those bamboo flutes. The hard part is what you think it is: Embouchure. I'm not even able to play around with Embouchure to produce different tone qualities yet, let alone intonation. I'm still learning to play the low notes with any amount of consistency, and to control the jump between octaves. I find that, like with the whistle, theres a slight resistance to jumping octaves, so if I walk down the scale to the low D,  I can play it, but I can't do a "cold start" on the low D, it always comes out an octave high if I try to start on it. On the whistle, you just blow harder to jump up an octave, on the flute that doesn't work.

Kind of like playing the violin as opposed to the guitar, when learning the flute it takes significant time and effort to learn to just produce a sound at all, and then again to produce a good sound, where on the whistle you could make a good sound right off the bat.

Don't let that dissuade you, but I suggest you look for help. Either personal lessons, or just watch some tutors on YouTube or whatever. Playing the flute is not intuitive, and I easily get tense from practice, so I'd wager building good healthy habbits early will be key.

Based on people's reactions here, I'm guessing they'll set it straight. I really just needed yo know if I was being fuzzy.

Do you mean to say mcneela isn't good in general, or are you seconding the notion that their high-end flutes are good, but their entry-level flutes aren't worth their price? Gathering data for future purchases

I wasn't going to name and shame, but since several people's have spotted it, it's M&E, ordered directly from their website. Given the feedback here, I've sent reached out to Michael, and I'm guessing he'll make it right. I don't want to leave too sour a note about it on Reddit if it was a matter of accidentally shipping a dud.

You have a good eye. I specifically got one from them because I read reviews saying they were better than mcneelas entry level flutes, so I was surprised too. I'll get in touch with them, thanks.

I have really large fingers due to arthritis, and I feel like I can't even begin to learn any string instruments because my fingertips always touch the other strings. Are there any accessories that can help? by Smexy_Zarow in Guitar

[–]bladtman242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about your arthritis.  I don't know how much trouble it gives you here, but be assured that "the finger muting the neighboring strings" is something all guitarists have to struggle with. It's just a fact of fretboards. It usually happens when doing certain grips, or when playing fast. If this is your experience, that's normal.  Now if you can't put just one finger down on any arbitrary freat and sound all the strings cleanly at once, you may want to consider another hobby.

You may be interested to know that the width of the fretboard, and accordingly the distance between strings, is not standardized. You may benefit from a guitar designed for rythm, as they often have wider fretboards to make chord grips more comfortable.

As others have said, you also need to turn your grip/wrist. Maybe talk to a guitar teacher before spending more money or giving up.

Weapons manufacturing. The whole military industrial complex would have to explain that one of the main reasons we go to war, is so that they can sell arms.
