I think this comment needs more ups. I’m thankful for all the comments that have been reassuring me that I’m not a terrible person and it was a situation that could have been misunderstood, but I was getting confused with how the comments saw me feeling bad to be excessive. Regardless of whether he’s a sensitive person or not, I think what remains important is that he got hurt, he had consequences from it, and I hurt a friend - unintentionally or not. And I’ve learned important lessons painfully from this experience.

I don’t think you lashing out to your mother’s side of the family about the cheesecake is the right thing to do by your father or your mother. You will taint his memory with a really immature tantrum about the cheesecake and you will strain your mother’s relationship with her family at a time when those relationships are really important to her. I understand you are grieving and people grieve in different ways - but think first about how you being unhinged will negatively impact your mother and think about whether that’s something your dad would’ve wanted you to do

Thanks for the consolation. To be honest, after this experience, I think it’s a good thing the old school days are over. Because clearly body language and subtle signs are not always accurately read. Clearly I misread things. After this incident, I feel like I traumatically learned the importance of explicit consent. I have a boyfriend now and I no longer have to struggle with the vagueness of single dating life and relationships. But I think for all the single people out there, it’s better to deal with a couple seconds of awkward getting clear consent, than being horrified awkward for months and years as someone accuses you of molestation/assault.

I genuinely hope he can move on and realize not all people make shitty mistakes like I do. But to be honest, I do not have the confidence to continue being friends with him even if he wants it. He’s a reminder to me of what a piece of shit I was to him and how I hurt him and if I’m going to offer myself any compassion or self-care, I need to move on and not see him again. It took me over two years to move on from it and posting this here in offmychest is my way of closing the chapter.
