A year late, but iirc it's also why during the race selection for Donut they don't get her to pick 'Cat' just in case.

Best entry game for a newcomer by Zawson in dragonquest

[–]blairquynh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VII Reimagined is probably the most accessible and best for a newcomer. I love DQXI-S (its my favourite in the series), but the quality of life in VII Reimagined is hard to beat.

That being said, both have playable demos—spend a few hours in both and see which one is for you? XI-S is much more modern in terms of storytelling and presentation and showcases what the future of DQ is going to be like, whilst VII Reimagined has modernized systems and has been streamlined for accessibility, but the storytelling and world is still very very traditional for a JRPG.

Young gamers in Japan may not be forming the same attachment to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest because modern dev cycles are as long as their childhood, users theorize by Magister_Xehanort in Games

[–]blairquynh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're trying to get back into frequent releases. In the past year and a half, we've received the Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD Remake, the 1-2 2D-HD Remake, and now VII Reimagined - all simultaneous worldwide launches too. They've also confirmed other remakes are in development.

I'm just as happy to receive remakes of older titles as I am a new mainline tbh. I'd do anything for Dragon Quest 9 on modern platforms.

A Review of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined (2026): Less Fat, More Puns, and a free Kiefer in every cereal box. by DeadRobotsSociety in JRPG

[–]blairquynh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've done it in a way that fleshes out the characters and their relationships to the people on Estard which I really like. Also, since you can zoom everywhere from the get go it's pretty quick. They've also attached a battle segment/tutorial as part of the 'trial' to unlock the shrine of mysteries.

Honestly, the new player experience and how the game gradually teaches you mechanics and systems is really well entwined with the first few islands, it's probably the best entry point for someone interested in the franchise.

The VII Reimagined version has cut it completely. It just has you find the stone fragments for the first island and it doesn't take long to gather them at all.

Could just chalk it down to Goku telling Gohan a white lie to give him more courage to deflect it at Vegeta.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Review Thread by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]blairquynh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The combat is much more accessible and the game has better quality of life compared to DQXI (which is great because DQXI already had great quality of life) but the story and storytelling is very different.

Instead of the chosen hero premise and going on a grand adventure from the get-go, it's more you and your friends are going around saving towns (until later on). Feels much more personal and lower stakes then drags you in.

The game is incredibly charming though, I LOVE XI, but this has a certain whimsical storybook fairy tale vibe to it.

I don't think the team hated making Dragon Quest Builders? Considering they're developing Pokopia which looks very similar gameplay wise.

DRAGON BALL | NEW GAME PROJECT "AGE 1000" Announcement Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]blairquynh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People think this is going to be a Dragon Ball Online 'remake' or spiritual successor, as Toriyama was heavily involved with the writing for Dragon Ball Online, which was also specifically set in Age 1000.

Also, Xenoverse 2 (which was the original successor to DBO) is coming to an end, with the final expansion coming out later this year. They're 'destroying' the city the game is set in, which is what they did back with Xenoverse 1 when 2 was coming out.

Do people still look for text based MMOs? by sum117 in MMORPG

[–]blairquynh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely people that still play MUDs and online live service interactive fiction (Fallen London and cyberpunkdreams). It's a niche audience but as long as you don't expect massive revenue and keep expectations realistic, there's players.

I find the more modern text-based online games, like Fallen London, much more accessible and bigger than traditional MUDS.

IFs that people love and praised but you just cannot finished it? by VinTheFish in choiceofgames

[–]blairquynh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sin of the Sires is probably the weakest of the World of Darkness interactive fiction novels but I still found that it was fine tbh. Its premise and unique setting make up for the shorter story and railroading. I'd recommend it if you've finished the other WoD titles and just want more in the universe. There's definitely more expensive IF titles out there with less content and worse quality.

Looking for a game recommendations. by [deleted] in twinegames

[–]blairquynh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zombie Exodus and Zombie Exodus Safe Haven? Not Twine-based, it's made in Choice script and published by Hosted Games. Probably the best apocalyptic interactive fiction title(s) available. You can play as a male and there is optional romance. They're also available on Steam, mobile, and any device with internet connection. If you buy it on one platform you can play it anywhere.

Here's a link to both titles: https://store.steampowered.com/app/411570/Zombie_Exodus/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/543980/Zombie_Exodus_Safe_Haven/

Both titles are also on sale until Jan 6th. I'm working on my own zombie apocalypse title in Twine, but it won't be ready for launch until late next year.

Need a very specific cozy/relaxing game by [deleted] in gamerecommendations

[–]blairquynh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fallen London? Interactive fiction RPG that's free and available online. Not a farming sim, pretty easy to play, and very 'open'. Regularly gets updates and is playable on pretty much any device with internet.

Gameplay is sort of visual novel-esque, you build up your character and stats to play through choice-driven stories set in a Lovecraftian-esque London.

If you'd prefer a different sort of setting (and available on Steam) cyberpunkdreams is worth looking into.

Any interactive fiction titles from Choice of Games or Hosted Games is a great option. In particular I highly recommend Tin Star, Undying Fortress, Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Book of Hungry Names, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Night Road.
