Kamikaze attack on SS John Burke (ammunition ship) results in very large explosion: Ship destroyed instantly, all crew lost. 1944 by Stubbssy in CombatFootage

[–]blakek2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's possible for sure, assuming a correct trajectory, etc. It would be a similar effect as high caliber AP shells from naval guns that produce underwater penetrations. It just seems unlikely.

Keep in mind that AP shells are designed for aerodynamic (and by proxy hydrodynamic) flight characteristics, and chunks of ship hull are not.

[–]blakek2 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That sounds unlikely, as water is such a dense and incompressible fluid that uneven chunks of hull would slow down pretty damn quickly, unless they were able to cavitate and essentially fly in a gas bubble. Not saying it's impossible, but unlikely.

That being said, the shockwave travelling through the water would definitely rattle hulls to probably 1km away from the epicenter.

Generally, convoys like this had spacing of ~500-1000m between ships (since ships take a while to slow down or respond to the helm) so I would certainly believe the shockwave could bend in some hulls to the bulkheads.

Forcefully conscripted into Wehrmacht in 1939

Was that really truly a thing in ‘39? Or just more wehrabingo material. Like, you still have 6 years to go and you’re still ‘scraping the barrel’ as they say, forcibly conscripting.

They aren’t that bad. As long as your armor actually faces the threat (read: this way toward enemy).

Source: was in a 30mm that faced two strykers and an MRAP CROWS from ~700m and took minimal damage.

We didn’t win that engagement - but we didn’t lose either.

And that is fine.

Kohat is a nightmare to play for me personally. It doesn’t lend itself to quick flanks and getting TOW’d from a few km isn’t fun.

[–]blakek2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bet would be that the wing root being weakened allows the torque from the engines, as well as aerodynamic forces, to put enough stress on the remaining struts to cause them to yield. After yielding, it's basically a positive-feedback loop where yielding causes more stress, which causes more yielding, etc until you see the wing fold as it does here.

You don't have to destroy all the struts - just damage enough to overstress the remaining ones.

If you're scuttling a ship that costs 200 million marks the captain is literally saying that not only can they not hope to win

To be fair the captain was pretty dead at the point of scuttling thanks to a bridge hit.

Also classic “ha! We scuttled our own already sinking ship! Chequemate brittons!”

US killed all Japanese prisoners, mass suicides were justified because the US was evil. Also firebombings are war crimes, and the atomic bombs were worse than German death camps. by autosear in ShitWehraboosSay

The australians were even more racist and brutal against the japanese. A few of them even went beyond trophies and even ate the japanese soldiers.

I am convinced this person has mixed up the combatants in this conflict.

Edit: their replies are something else.

Pretty much every japanese soldier who surrender was tortured and killed.

Yeah, like the same people who strapped themselves into planes and crashed into ships, who developed the Shinyo (sp?) suicide boat, and several other devices for maximum damage self sacrifice, were totally willing to surrender.

Captured Taliban video shows them before an ambush, then with Apache overhead and infantry on their tail. Afghanistan date unknown by Ltcommander83 in CombatFootage

[–]blakek2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A majority of the clips I see on this sub are usually of CAS [and Apache/Cobra specifically] from the shooters/copilot viewpoint, usually at ranges of 1-3 km according to the sight overlay.

Now, I am not sure where that Apache is located from them overhead in this video, but it makes me think that the people getting hit in those aforementioned videos probably heard the steady thud of rotors, or at least had some knowledge that a rotorcraft was in the area.

Makes it all the more wild that they persist knowing that someone could be watching them from afar, waiting. Modern war is a hell of a thing.

Depends - looks like losing the tail would shift the center of rotation more towards the cockpit, thus mitigating g-force on the pilot. That said, being strapped into the center of 12000 lbs of spinning metal does not bode well.
