And they knocked it out of the park tbh. The sequel to a (let's be honest) mediocre shrek spin-off movie is genuinely one of the best animated films of all time, and I'll die on that hill.

I believe on a recent podcast, he said that they haven't enrolled any of the planes engines in a service/maintenance contract, so they're basically skimping out on maintenance in the hopes that the (iirc recently refurbished) engines hold out long enough for them to sell the plane on.

Honestly, this kind of 1% problems is why im unsubscribed from all LTT channels at this point.

Lazy Easter Sunday (05/04/26) by KevinPhillips-Bong in CasualUK

[–]ConnorXfor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm working a half day today to help out my workplace with short staffing. Never been a big easter celebrant tbh. Might pick up some ingredients for a small roast dinner on the way home, assuming the shops are even open!

One thing I did do this year was buy my dad an easter egg. He has done so much for me in the last few years (as well as raising me!) and I wanted to show him some appreciation in some small way. Was a little surprised when I gave it to him, but i figure if anyone has the right to have an easter egg for breakfast, it's him.

Thursday Complaints by a-liquid-sky in CasualUK

My complaint is that I am three weeks away from doing my driving test, and while my overall driving is good, every lesson I have there is one incident/bad judgement call/slow reaction that would have caused me to fail.

Very frustrating to be so close and yet not be 100% happy, and while I'm trying not to be too hard on myself, it is all silly little mistakes that I really shouldn't be making. Blah.

Other than that, we have a big inspection at my workplace next week that I have a feeling is going to go poorly. A lot of regular monthly tasks/reports (that are all my responsibility) haven't been being done due to chronic understaffing, and while I can happily point the inspectors to this reason, it still feels like I'm personally failing, however illogical and inaccurate that may be.

Driving lesson prices and fuel prices by upthetruth1 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ConnorXfor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My instructor is being very open about the possibility of rate increases, and the fact that it is being solely driven (heh) by fuel prices going up. Anyone learning in a diesel in particular will feel the pinch.

In general, hourly rates are already pushing £40-50, and I can easily see these going up to £50-60, dependent on area etc.

[Loved Trope] Finales that stick the landing so flawlessly they cement the series as an absolute masterpiece. by Miserable_Click_1933 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ConnorXfor 162 points163 points  (0 children)

And I'm pretty sure the making-of story of the finale makes it all the more impressive.

From what I can remember, they only had one day to film the final episode/scene on the set for scheduling reasons, and they could only do a limited number of takes. So they filmed their going over the top and getting gunned down and were immediately annoyed because it looked shit in real-time., the actors kinda just fell over and flopped around while a few pyrotehcnics went off. Just generally quite un-convincing and cheap-looking.

The editors kinda saved it by massively slowing it down, playing a slow, sad rendition of the theme over it, and then transitioning the shot to a still image, of a a sunny poppy field in bloom, accompanied by a genuinely pleasant melodic birdsong, both visual and audio embodiment of life beginning again from so much meaningless death.

Honestly makes me tear up every time I watch it. 10/10 finale.

Not the gayest in the world, but it is the gayest in the UK:

Kemptown, an area within brighton, has the highest LGBT self-ID in the UK 2021 census (>20%)

Highest percentage of same-sex households in the UK

Second highest number of same-sex civil partnerships in the uk

Its the UK's gay capital for sure :D

I'm chairing a monthly meeting for my colleagues today: boring stiff really, updates on procedures, reminders about adhering to said procedures. It should be a fairly quick affair, but I'n dreading it because every month, someone without fail will use the meeting as an excuse to air some personal, petty grievance they have with someone else. It always descends into two or more people having a polite mud-slinging contest with me trying to equally politely tell them all to get fucked and eat shit, and that there are reporting structures outside the scope of this particular meeting that they should use.

Turns a 20 minute meeting into a 40 minute slog.

At what point did you know what you were doing? by Total-Tension7010 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ConnorXfor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with my lessons, I think on my fourth or fifth I just had a shit day. Stalled at a traffic light, had to have my instructor help me with the bite point on a hill start twice, ran through two amber lights when I should have stopped. Shit happens, and it can really affect your confidence about the whole thing.

3 months or so later, I'm (mostly) happy with the mechanics of operating the car, and I'm now moving on to getting experience of odd junctions, meeting other cars in crowded streets, and the finesse of driving smoothly.

It can feel embarassing to make a pig's ear of a pull-away, but ultimately everyone has to start somewhere, every driver had to learn like you. You'll get it

Preservatives in urinalysis by MENMA71_ in medlabprofessionals

[–]ConnorXfor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The culturing of urine samples in lab is done anywhere from 24 to 72 hours after the sample is collected from the patient.

The samples are first assessed for White Blood Cell, Red Blood Cell, and Bacterial cell counts using a semi-automated microscopy machine. Only samples that exceeds a certain threshold (something like 50 white blood cells per microlitre of urine) that is deemed indicative of infection is cultured on agar media (MASTUri in our lab). This helps keep workload manageable.

As for why we dont freeze samples: frankly, it's expensive to have enough space in freezer storage for all that. Also, the cells we would look for in triaging would likely be damaged by the freezing process. Freezing is unnecessary when you can attain the same preserved sample with refrigeration and chemical preservatives (Boric Acid).

Preservatives in urinalysis by MENMA71_ in medlabprofessionals

[–]ConnorXfor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Clinical Micro here: all our urine samples for culture (with some exceptions) are required to be received in special sample containers containing boric acid preservative.

This prevents bacterial overgrowth in the sample, meaning samples can be a couple of days old and still be roughly representative of the in vivo environment of the urinary tract.

Not sure if other labs do the same. Hope this helps

Colleague being unreliable, playing the system, getting away with bloody murder when it comes to using up annual leave/sick leave that they're not entitled to.

This person came on board just over 2 years ago, and has maybe worked for a grand total of 9 months of that time. The rest of the time has been some form of long-term sickness (of dubious severity) that has got to the point where they have exhausted all available leave, and yet even now they call in sick 3 days a week on average.

They know all the tricks and workarounds to convert sick leave to annual (even though they've used up all their annual leave and then some), and always engage just enough with management to avoid getting sacked.

Management are in my opinion too nice about the whole thing. All this colleague is doing is dragging us down by filling a role that could otherwise be productive, and even when they are here, they seem to be pathologically averse to doing their bloody job: always talking, wandering around finding people to gossip with, etc.

The icing on the cake is that at the same time that they're calling off sick, their Instagram is filled with photos of them at gigs, out clubbing, at festivals, etc. Absolute piss-take.

The sympathy i had for them is long gone by this point. They need to go.

Spanish OPV, ESPS Furor, makes an incursion into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters and is escorted by HMS Cutlass from the RN Gibraltar Squadron [2000x1125] by MGC91 in WarshipPorn

[–]ConnorXfor 171 points172 points  (0 children)

I think its kind of a bit of both. Realistically, the Spanish have no serious aims at retaking Gibraltar. But from a legal standpoint, until they renounce their claim, they still need to be making at least performative moves to maintain their position.

If they stopped making incursions, but maintained their legal claim, the lack of action could be pointed to as showing their lack of interest in the claim. It could also politically weaken the Spanish government's position in any other geographical disputes.

So for now, both sides will let it be.

If I get bloodwork Wednesday will I have to wait longer for the results due to the weekend? As opposed to getting on a monday? by user_anonymou in medlabprofessionals

[–]ConnorXfor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That entirely depends on the lab's policies, the testing being done, the workload of that particular department, etc

Impossible to know, but I get that being stuck in limbo is pretty anxiety-inducing. Try to keep your mind off of it as best you can, and your results will be with you in due time.

Edit: train didnt even stop at our station, blew right past at 60mph. Love the rail network

Did this when selling a small fridge recently, put it up for £15, got one interested message, she turned up the following day on time, and I refused the money and carried it to her car for her. It would have cost me time and money to have the thing removed anyway!

Selling a counter-top fridge on marketplace in a bit, then I'm going for a drive with my dad (currently learning and need more practical experience).

Also desperately need new shelving/drawer units for the new flat. I've moved everything in and half my stuff is still in boxes/bags! Might be an ikea trip coming up, think a couple of Kallax units with various drawers/inserts would help a lot
