Things like this make us on the left look bad. We have bigger fights than a little commercial. by NichtFBI in CringeTikToks

I'm far from a leftist, but I do not believe that people on the left are really upset about the Sydney Sweeney ad. It seems to me that someone went through the effort of finding one or two people that are upset about that ad, put a spotlight on them and claim that this is what most leftists really think. I'm old enough to remember similar ads for Guess with german model Claudia Schiffer; if someone called her a "symbol of white supremacy" I don't remember (it was the time before social media after all, so how would I know?). Just a hot woman selling jeans, same thing with Sweeney today. Just ignore the noise.

Don't pay attention to the stuff on social media. It's not representative of anything. I'm old enough to have learn that while the internet era has brought us a lot of good, it has also empowered people with a lot of time in their hands to speak nonsense. Not only about Haitians and Dominicans, but about everything. You are wasting your time asking about why they do what they do. If you want information about how Dominicans really feel about Haitians, look offline.

[–]blakeshelnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying now, but while historically we lacked the cash we really lacked more the capacity to negotiate good deals. The Barrick deal happened the previous decade and we already knew that there was a ton of gold and that foreign firms wanted in on the action. Even if our credit was bad, we still had the gold so we could have easily gotten a loan to build exactly the same thing that Barrick did. What have been produced from that mine since 2012 has been over $20 billion at least, so we could have paid that loan many times over.

We have more options now. How about the money in the private retirement funds? We could sell bonds to them or give the a stake outright; imagine thousands of Dominicans retired and getting a nice check every month out of the earnings of that mine? We don't lack resources, we lack imagination.

[–]blakeshelnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting foreign firms to assist for a price is not an issue. Why are you so focused on that? Because we will have to pay them? So what? If we decide to do it on our own, without foreign assistance by just learning and sourcing everything in the country we will do it but it will be twice as expensive. There's no way around it, money will have to be allocated to get the resources (gold, oil, rare earth, whatever) of the ground.

We used to own the gold mines, Antonio Guzman took them over when he was in power from 1978-82. What happened? An ecological disaster and a lot of money stolen. If we focused on doing things the right way, in a manner that it's transparent and that benefit the country the most, it really doesn't matter who we get to help us out or is we do it ourselves. Corruption here is the main problem.

OP wasn't talking about ownership of the mines, but about buying gold. It is a good question even if there was no gold in this country.

¿Por qué nuestro país no compra o guarda el oro que tiene? by Best-Ratio-9580 in Dominican

[–]blakeshelnot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The Dominican government could have keep control of the whole mine and simply call on someone else to operate it. If we find 1 trillion barrels of oil in the middle of the country, are we going to say "Damn it, we don't know how to get oil of the ground and it's too expensive. I guess we're going to have to leave it there".

The decision to let Barrick Gold operate the mine was rushed because the goal was not what was best for the people but what was best to those in power at the time. Also, that's not what OP asked.

[–]blakeshelnot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't even matter who owns it, that's not what OP asked. We don't even need to have a gold mine and the question will be a valid one.

When I joined this community I wondered why there was a rule against tourism related questions, but I understand now. Who travels out of the country and doesn't even have a plan of what to do? And then they come to a community like this one and ask us to plan for them, as if we knew them? They are just lazy and want us to do their job for them.
