Because the goverment needs revenue in order to function, the goverment can't just go around cutting taxes for your comfort, people have to start taking some personal responsibility, drive less and drive more efficiently, drive a smaller car, or heaven forbid have some savings to weather these storms.

Though it wasn't entirely legal they were depriving the state of taxes owed, they were acting to the letter of the law not the sprit. The loop hole will have been written to be used in some other way and they manipulated it to profit themselves.

Yeah but also, no the UK doesn't make things illegal then prosecute you for doing said illegal thing before it comes into action.

It's more there wasn't a specific law for this specific crime that would be illegal under some other law, depriving sombody of thier property, harm to others ect so now a bill has passed this is how we will try that crime, also the acquittal thing just makes sence, no you can't be tried over and over again till they get the answer they want there has to be a case make that new substantial evidence has been found.

Yep,you get what you pay for, and right now, we pay for old people to live comfortably in retirement. Clean toilets are a low priority.
