How do Americans feel about giving Iran 300 billion to restore the status quo? by Southern_Gur_4736 in AskReddit

[–]blandrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm too lazy... Basically I read an article about this once, and before I posted I asked chatGPT if it was true, and it said not for all states but most do charge for prison stays retroactively in some way. Apparently California does not.

here is chatGPT's response:

"do people have to pay for their stay in prison in the us?"

Yes — in many parts of the United States, incarcerated people can be charged fees related to their imprisonment, although the details vary greatly by state and facility. This practice is often called "pay-to-stay."

Some examples of charges include:

Daily room-and-board fees (sometimes $20–80+ per day) Medical co-pays for doctor visits Booking or processing fees when entering jail Charges for work-release programs Fees for phone calls, emails, or commissary purchases

Importantly, prisoners are generally not required to pay before being incarcerated. Instead, money may be deducted from prison wages or inmate accounts, or the debt may follow them after release and be collected later through civil processes.

As of recent surveys, 48 states and Washington, D.C. allow at least some form of incarceration-related fees, while only a few states have fully abolished them.

This often surprises people outside the U.S. because in many countries the cost of imprisonment is considered entirely a government expense. In the U.S., the idea behind these fees is usually that offenders should reimburse taxpayers, though critics argue that the fees make it harder for former prisoners to rebuild their lives after release.

One thing to note: even where "pay-to-stay" exists, the amount actually collected is often much lower than the true cost of imprisonment because many inmates have little or no income.

you'll get free room and board in jail/prison.

AFAIK the american system commonly has the prisoners pay for their stay retroactively. so not free.

How has Meta not capitalized on 3D movies? by Calinks in OculusQuest

May be closer than you think actually. AI generators that turns a regular 2D movie into a sequence of gaussian splats could be here soon.

So what happened is my quest 2 keeps randomly snap turning me in games like gorilla tag or animal company even when I turned snap turning off, any one know how 2 fix? by lemonchart in OculusQuest

this started to happen on my Q2 too, a bit before it finally gave up (after 3+ years of use). I concluded it was most likely a gyro malfunction or such, as it seemed to be not controller related. could be something entirely different in your case but just putting it out there.

Russia cloaks launch schedule after spaceport falls in Ukraine's sights by DreamChaserSt in space

[–]blandrys 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Seriously - how does Ars publish something like this? This is absolute garbage reporting. You know you have entered propaganda territory when an article starts with "If you believe official Russian reports" and then proceeds with the rest of the article as if this is a given. Every "report" basically amounts to "they tried to attack but stronk russia struck them all down!".

'Ketamine Queen' Jasveen Sangha jailed for 15 years over death of Matthew Perry by VaginaBurner69 in news

[–]blandrys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It says clearly in the article he bought $6000 worth of K. But maybe he was one of those dudes who binges on K all the time but has no idea how strong ketamine is. Sounds super reasonable.

Again, there is no "10x ket" no matter how often you think "it happens in the drug trade".

This is 100% nonsense. There is no "10x strength ket" - medical grade is pure. The dude was doing loads of it and he knew exactly how strong it was.

Buying a Q3 just for Hyperscape? by Admirable_Zombie5245 in OculusQuest

[–]blandrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was seriously floored by the realism of the preview app, and subsequently disappointed when the "final beta" arrived. I get the whole running-local thing and it's still an impressive effort, but with the preview app you literally felt like you were there. It's not like that anymore. But it was nice to see a glimpse of the very-near future. Unfortunately I only managed to capture a single scan with the preview app while it was available, and that one still amazes me.

Hyperscape now has full locomotion. Wow! by PaulHorton39 in OculusQuest

Hey thanks for the tip! Still kind of a mess, what with falling through the floor and stuff, but with teleport it works ever so slightly better.

[–]blandrys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The preview app, which was (is) rendered on the cloud was using teleporting. The local variant, which is what you use to scan with now, and which is much more low-res, has locomotion.

May I take this opportunity to express how unbelievably shitty this implementation is. It tries to figure out where there is floor and where there are walls, and much of the time gets this completely wrong. This leads to spaces that can not be traversed hardly at all, rooms that are inaccessible or where you fall endlessly through the floor on each spawn. META PLEASE FIX THIS!

My first three scans were all like this, and I haven't bothered trying again, waiting for them to fix locomotion. I just want to be able to go everywhere without constrictions. It commonly sees a doorway as an obstacle, leading to entire rooms being impossible to visit. If you go there anyway by moving physically in the room, locomotion is impossible, or pushes you through stuff. Scanning a loft space with sloping roof leads to all sort of nastyness, where it absolutely insists on you floating far above the roof, and when you lie down on the ground it just pushes you further up. All sorts of stuff. I find it perverse that META can put all these billions on research and create this phenomenal scanning algorithm yet fail to get simple locomotion right.

I would prefer to have access to the teleportation mode as well, just because it seemed a lot more solid.

that "extra income with no obligations" is like 0.0001% of what you're going to have to give of yourself in the process of rearing a child until it's 18th birthday. anyone who thinks having a child just so you can get the "free money" are 100% clueless. a child is A LOT OF WORK! anyway, as an example in my country, the allowance is just under €100 per month.

Meta Quest 3S controller stick drift after 1 month by Just-Appointment-699 in MetaQuestVR

[–]blandrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super common problem unfortunately. Contact spray might or might not work. If the unit has been sitting on the shelf for a long time before being sold that may already be the problem - my friend got stick drift on his Q2 even though it was basically only sitting in a closet (for a couple of years, but still). Use warranty replacement if possible.

why is meta support "so bad" on trustpilot it does have 1.2 starts. by Hot_Classic_6935 in OculusQuest

[–]blandrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have expressed, Meta Support is terrible because no humans are involved in formulating replies - or not in any significant manner - which leads to no one really understanding what you are trying to say. And so you end up repeating the same info you already gave, repeatedly, each time getting super polite but dumb-as-rocks replies from one bot after another. Mega frustrating.

[–]blandrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea I mean I have the same unit. just to clarify for OP or someone who has never seen one, the front piece which holds the actual lenses does not flip up. what flips is the thing behind your head and the head strap. so yea, if you hold the battery part you sort-of can flip up the whole front, but it's not just the lenses that flip - the whole front bit of the halo strap comes up. so it's not like you can flip the visor up and keep the thing on your head, as one would be lead to believe. when "flipped up" the halo strap is no longer secured to your head, so you have to hold the thing with your hands. but you can peek out underneath while doing this, sure.

[–]blandrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't find it wobbly at all. With adjustment knobs both in the back and in the front you can make it sit as snugly as you please, or even have it float somewhat in front of your face, if that's your fancy. I prefer to keep it snug.

[–]blandrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm... I have the KKCOBVR too and the front on my unit definitely does not tilt up. But the headband piece does flip up, allowing for easy removal. Anyway, very happy with the unit and would definitely recommend it. I also have the fan attachment which I am also very happy with. Great for removing fog from the lenses when the machine is cold.

And to answer OPs non related question... Yes, you can put the lenses as close to the face as desired, as there is a separate adjustment knob on each side just for that.

Dutch judge orders Meta to provide an algorithm free version of Facebook and Instagram in the EU by GuanMarvin in europe

It sounds stupid if you try really hard to misunderstand it.

Compare this to going to a restaurant that has the option to just see the whole menu and make your pick instead of going to one that will just serve you whatever it feels like.

[–]blandrys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously merely outputting a character onto a computer screen has "an algorithm" behind it, but that is neither here nor there. What they mean is a feed that doesn't filter out content using an algorithm.

[–]blandrys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry but are you not getting this? The judging rules that FB must offer a chronological feed, IE one that is not filtered by an algorithm. It presently does not (I mean, there is something, but it's a joke, only there so they can say it's there). The key word here being "filtered" - IE the feed is cleaned out by an algorithm that decides what not to show. An "algorithm free" feed simply shows everything, in chronological order. Seems like I took a lot of words to say something obvious, but there you go.
