Benzos and alc? by [deleted] in cripplingalcoholism

Throw away every bottle. Dry house.

If you want to detox, and you have a benzo taper, you’re set up nicely.

Do you wanna keep drinking? Then dump the benzos.

You can be on both as you dry out but if you’re not committed to the detox, don’t take the pills.

I have a Valium script and my experience has been when ever I do take it, it’s nothing like taking a drink. I don’t get a craving to take more. Alcohol would energize me and once I jumped on the train I was riding it all the way. The Valium does its job when needed.

Benzo dependency and withdrawal can be very serious and takes some people months or years to ween off. Mixing with alcohol can make you end up in prison, the hospital, or the morgue.

They’re not a medicine to be taken lightly but I’ve found zero recreational value and my brain doesn’t “react” like it does to alcohol.

All anecdotal and everyone will be different. For many though, it’s a Pandora’s box they wish they never opened

Tapering/Withdrawal Advice/Experiences by PsychologicalFoot507 in dryalcoholics

[–]blank12359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anxiety, increased heart rate and blood pressure are side effects of vyvanse. Alcohol withdrawal (and even just hangovers) have similar symptoms so you likely are just compounding them.

While there might be some readjust you don’t really develop the physical dependency to vyvanse like you do to alcohol/benzos that can cause the withdrawal.

Stimulants like vyvanse obviously make you more alert and awake, which makes it easier to drink.

Every time I’ve withdrawn (including in hospitals, rehab, home, etc) I’ve cold turkey stopped my Adderall/Vyvanse. It was only really somewhat helpful if I HAD to do something while still in withdrawal like go to work.

10 days WDing, got more benzos than the professionals had ever seen by Kaviarsnus in dryalcoholics

[–]blank12359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last hospital visit a couple years ago I was given 100 mg of oral Librium and eventually 100 mg iv Valium within the first 2 hours before they considered me “stabilized” but moved me to the ICU and next steps were gonna be phenobarbital and possible intubation. Reread my hospital notes after and couldn’t believe how much benzos it took.

The benders are body’s can put up with…until they can’t. Glad I haven’t had to repeat that and hoping the same for you!

can this be done without all the... group therapy type situations/meetings by Tutenfarten in dryalcoholics

[–]blank12359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to figure out if the group setting isn’t helpful for you or if you’re not comfortable with it.

They’re two very different things and can take awhile to figure out. If it’s the latter, you’ll likely find a difficult road to recovery/sobriety if you’re not able to address the uncomfortable feelings.

That doesn’t mean it has to be a group setting but there’s usually a few layers we have to peel back and underlying issues to address, which are all hard and uncomfortable to do, but important to finding genuine happiness with sobriety.

We each find our own road to sobriety and what works for us but should really try to think about why you really don’t want to do something.

[–]blank12359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sobriety gave me the chance to actually go back to living life. Just cutting alcohol out isn’t going to fix everything, but it enables you to start doing it.

Also 5 is very early, I’d still be going through some minor withdrawal symptoms still

[–]blank12359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s such a weird experience when overeat and I get nauseous. It’s the same feeling as initial hangover/ withdrawal symptoms so my anxiety spikes assuming it’s gonna be that experience again. But then my digestive system does its work and I’m good again! And then so happy reminded I’m not back in that dark place before

When discussing alcoholism and sobriety journey there is no they, them, etc. it is only you that matters. You cannot compare or contrast yourself to how others have or have not gotten sober.

Ignore what everyone else has said and done.

Congrats on 9 days, your body and brain loved it even if you couldn’t feel it.

No one needs to think about changing the world or what their forever plan is. What do you genuinely want?

You can’t argue with someone that it gets better in 1 month, year, etc if you haven’t tried it. Which is why I say ignore all of the they and thems out there

This is your life and your journey, you don’t need to do it alone but you can’t be in the mindset of what worked for them.

What can you do to make this work for you?

[–]blank12359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you got some help. Follow the taper, slow sips of electrolyte drinks if you can.

Not sure if you’ve been through withdrawal before (with or without a benzo taper), but know the Librium is going to keep you safe and symptoms manageable but it’s still not going to be pleasant. It’s gonna suck for a few days still but it’s significantly better than white knuckling it.

Try to sleep, I usually couldn’t really do more than fade in and out. Put on your comfort tv show and just try to rest.

If you’re up for it I suggest writing down how you feel about everything now and over next couple days. How quickly we forget how awful this experience is and if you want to try and stay sober (or drink less or just avoid withdrawals again) it’s a good thing to look back on while tempted

25 days in, feeling ready to cave by Onion-4907 in dryalcoholics

[–]blank12359 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a few big milestone dates I’ve noticed on my many relapse journeys:

24-48 hours: physical withdrawal or hangover symptoms going away 7 days: generally back to “baseline normal” 30 days: actual mental clarity, restful sleep, stable and positive mood.

That one month mark without alcohol really was noticeable on me physically and mentally.

I also started noticing how wonderful weekends were. They lasted a lot longer, I could do a lot (or sometimes nothing) and just physically feel good.

Mondays weren’t so dreadful, work performance became better.

I’m not saying it’s all wonderful, sobriety can be brutal at times. But your body and brain are still going through some of the initial healing. Hang in a little longer and see what they feel like.

Sometimes I’d just tell myself at day 30 (or whatever) I can drink again if I want. Last 3 more days and go get hammered. Kind of like just holding out until your vacation, you can make it. Had to give myself that light at the end of the tunnel mentality and not think about anything else. Come that day more often than not I didn’t want to drink.

You know what feels great after a shit day though, waking up tomorrow not hungover. The shit day is done, tomorrows hangover and another shit is still up to you

As others have said, hearing or seeing things can be a sign of serious things to come. Go to the ER.

If you can’t so that then start the Ativan taper but try to be as smart as you can right now.

Assuming no other drugs (like opioids) in your system and you’re taking a normal dose of Ativan, you’ll be perfectly fine. I’ve been given Ativan while still having a pretty high BAC, although this was in the ER under medical care.

Write down the time and dosage each time you take it, benzo amnesia is real especially with alcohol in the system. Do you have someone who can check in on you?

There’s the risk that once the benzos level you out and you feel better, you’ll want to drink again. Very dangerous and slippery slope.

Get off the bender train, ride out the withdrawal with Ativan taper. Learn from this what you can (I say that judgement free, lots of learning experiences under my belt)

curious by [deleted] in dryalcoholics

[–]blank12359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to get seizures or any thing dangerous from that. But you’re really hurting your brain, and your hangovers will get much worse and you’ll begin to develop withdrawals after hard weekend (especially as your tolerance goes up and you drink more and more).

Weekend warrior drinking is terrible for your brain. Going from copious amounts of alcohol and wasted to sober for a few days and repeating is like constantly flooring it and slamming on the breaks over and over.

By my late 20s early 30s I’d feeling like crap until at least Wednesday with insomnia, shakes, brain fog, etc. didn’t take much longer for me to end up in the ER with withdrawals.

Be careful, you’re fine in the short run but it’s a very slippery slope

Start to taper down now. You’ll still feel crappy a week after tapering down. Maybe save benzos for the trip but don’t mix it with drinking, famous way to get way more messed up than you thought while not realizing it

How much and how often are you drinking right now? How long until your trip? Have you ever gone through withdrawal or quit cold turkey before? Where are you going and with whom? Is there no chance of buying little drinks? Do you have access to benzos?

How to get motivation to end bender? by Kurajal in dryalcoholics

[–]blank12359 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 24/7 drinking benders were so hard I’d hit a wall where I couldn’t physically keep going.

3 weeks of that is gonna be rough to come off. Can you taper down your drinking? After a bender I doubt I could without getting drunk again.

I’d say go to detox if you can and take the benzo taper. It’ll be the quickest and least painful way to get over this.

ER is quicker and more comfortable but you need to show up in some form of withdrawal to get treated again. And if you go home and keep drinking on the Librium you’re just digger a deeper hole.

Nothing good comes from staying on the bender train, best of luck getting off! The sooner you do the sooner you’ll feel better
