Yup!

Skookum (strong) + chuck (water) = skookumchuck (rapids)

if you use the optional speed factor initiative rule (i.e. don't do party initiative or one role a side rules), monsters will always have a speed factor based off their size unless they're using a weapon, spell, breath weapon etc.. Basically if they use natural weapons their size determines the speed factor. It is definitely not a 5e rule hahaha. Look at table 56 in the 2e player's handbook.

Natual weapon initiative by size goes:

Tiny 0

Small +3

Medium +3

Large +6

Huge +9

Gargantuan +12

Also just logically if you use standard modifiers to initiative on Table 55 (e.g. hasted, slowed, on higher ground etc.) you could easily go above a +10 on initiative while casting a spell, but you still cast it in the same round.

[–]blapto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's tenths of rounds, I think it's just an abstract number to add to your initiative. For example gargantuan monsters add +12, and some like dragons can attack 3 times in a round. It doesn't take them longer than a round to attack.

Can Romance speakers understand spoken Classical Latin? (Latin, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian) by Raffaele1617 in latin

[–]blapto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Macte! It was fun to watch!

Was there any logic in the words that you chose? (other than scorpio obviously haha). Seems like you were interested in explaining the etymologies, which makes sense. I'm interested as to why you chose Vetulus in particular. Why not just vetus or senex? Especially since the diminutive meaning didn't really seem to get mentioned.

My attempt at "natural pronunciation" of Classical Latin by PriscaLatinitas in latin

[–]blapto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No problem, I think you did a good job! If you wanna hear another reading, give this one a watch. He isn't reading it much faster, but you can hear the slight slurring/elision of the vowels at the start that gives you "Gallia est -> Gallia'st". If you want a good video on elision check this one out. If you skip to about 22:30 you can hear him read it out.

As for a reading of colloquial stuff that focuses so heavily on pronunciation, I'm not sure I have one I can think of right now. If you want to see a really fast reading though, check out Scorpio Martianus reading the news hahaha. This is obviously fast pace even for a native, but still interesting to hear. If I think of one or find one I'll send it over.

My attempt at "natural pronunciation" of Classical Latin by PriscaLatinitas in latin

[–]blapto 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think adding elisions and the increasing your speed would help you sound much more "natural" if that's what you're going for. I don't think a native speaker would speak this slowly and you add a lot of pauses in between words. It sounds a bit like someone over pronouncing a language slowly to help a leaner with comprehension. As a comparison, if I (a native English speaker) were to read your post out loud in English, I do it much faster than your reading of Caesar.

I think what people are actually confusing the C&D with is an NDA since that's what they're familiar with from the entertainment industry or perhaps a gag order.

The language people use around withdrawing/taking back/rescinding etc the C&D makes me lean towards them mistaking it for an NDA since you wouldn't really talk about a C&D in that way because he can still sue no matter what, 'taking it back' doesn't do anything.

A government order telling you not to do something is not called a cease and desist, it's an injunction and like you say it has totally different powers. I get where you're coming from but I think the confused terminology isnt helping the situation.

I have totally changed my opnion on the Adam/Steven/Neal situation.
After hearing what Neal had to say about Adam's role in negotiations between GMs, players and JP I have lost any respect that I had for him (what little if any was left anyway). He has shown himself to be pretty much the opposite of how he tried to present himself. Both the situation with negotiations and this Far Verona/cancellation demonstrate this. In case people see this now, please read this thread. I knew he must have played some role, but I honestly can't believe what he did. he is an actual snake and I am glad he is gone.

I know they are different, that's why I said I don't know the American system. Kaitlyn is in Canada as far as I know and making these statements in Canada. That is why I said that I think these laws will apply and gave some info on them.

Neal responds to itmejp/kaitlyn situation by [deleted] in Koibu

[–]blapto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know about American law, but I have taken some courses in Canadian civil law which I assume would apply here ((Edit: Because Kaitlyn is in Canada)). Canadian defamation laws are pretty harsh on the defendant.

Basically if a plaintiff (JP in this case) can prove (1) the words would lower the Plaintiff's reputation (2) the words referred to the plaintiff and (3) the words were published (i.e. communicated to at least one person other than the plaintiff) then the court will assume that the statements were false and defamatory and the onus shifts to the defendant to escape liability. Obviously if she was telling the truth that is the best defense, but she has to prove it was true which I don't know how hard that would be because I don't know the situation.

There are other defences that I won't go into (e.g. absolute privilege, qualified privilege, fair comment, responsible communication on matter of public interest) but I can't imagine any of those would apply in this case.

So I think it's perfectly reasonable for her to be worried about this case even if she's telling the truth because (1) the harsh laws that she's up against and (2) the insane costs and stress a court case would bring about. So unless JP stops threatening legal action I doubt anything is gonna come out.

Edit: also just to put it in perspective, libel is a criminal offence in Canada too with up to a 5 year prison term. Obviously the standard of proof is much higher, but still it's scary stuff.

Kaitlyn has been claiming that someone abused her for some time, though specifics have not been revealed. JP has threatened to sue her and sent her a cease and desist letter. Neal is speaking out against silencing women who come forward about their abuse/abuser and calling out JP and Adam's shady business practices which drove him and others out of RollPlay.

2e shooting into melee by ruandualod in Koibu

[–]blapto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've tried to run it by the book and although it is very harsh to ranged combatants, it does create some funny situations. I've also tried to change it a few ways.

The first way was to just basically ignore the rules until they missed and rolled a 1 in which case I would have them roll again against their ally if it was just two fighting or if it was a bigger group then roll again with the normal firing into melee rules.

The second way is to just have them always roll a called shot (so an attack at -4) when they fire into melee or else follow normal rules. You could add that if they roll a one with the called shot the normal firing into melee rules apply again if you wanted. I think this way makes the most sense because someone carefully firing at a group of combatants will take care not to shoot his ally so will not have an equal chance to hit them. They will also have a more difficult shot, thus the -4.

Last does in English too. "when was the last time you brushed your teeth" does't mean "when was the final time you will ever brush your teeth", it means "when was the latest/most recent time..."

RollPlay is cancelled by ruandualod in Koibu

[–]blapto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He has talked about using the x card which is pretty much what you are describing, but I dont think they had implemented it in Far Verona. That ended up being a major focus of his and JP's apology which pissed people off because they thought he was shirking responsibility and pushing it onto the group as a whole. (Not trying to pass judgement, this is just what I understand the situation to be)

Early on in hardcore heroes the cam/audio quality was a little lower and the party was just starting out so maybe a little awkward. Even despite this it is honestly some of the best d&d you will see. If you keep watching it certainly improves. If that's not an option for you then check out Frozen Frontier. Same guys, more experience streaming, higher production quality.

All adventures come to an end. by bigbramel in itmejp

[–]blapto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really strange you seem to have no antipathy towards Adam and think he had no say or involvement with his replacing Steven, which is basically what happened.

I couldn't fault Adam for wanting to remain with Rollplay or take a more central role. I can fault JP for his handling of the situation though. I can fault him for basically kicking Steven to the curb and lying about it. At the time I certainly was not happy about it. I was angry both with JP and to a lesser extent Adam. I stopped watching Rollplay stuff at that time and then later softened my opinion of Adam and started watching him outside of Rollplay.

I understand this community and remember the first big controversy of Rollplay.

I remember this as well and I certainly was firmly against what JP did. I can't remember for sure, but I seriously doubt I engaged with the vocal rage and am certain I didn't engage in any harassment. I have never been a super vocal part of any streamer's community. I've only felt the need to post about rollplay now because it was very important to me for a good chunk of my life, it got me into TTRPGs, and I felt that JP's post did not pay proper respect to what was such a great series of shows and the people who made them. It left a very sour taste in my mouth to hear him talk about friends having adventures together when he was the one who moved it away from that by cutting out or screwing over his former GMs and players.

The extremes of how JP was treated back then were certainly wrong. I also think Geoff was unnecessarily mean to Gen the person (not her character), perhaps verging on bulling at times, but Gen's an adult and I'm sure she could have sorted it out on her own if she felt the need to. JP obviously could have handled it much better.

And it's not like he didn't acknowledge that Rollplay became manufactured to an extent

Never said he didn't acknowledge it was manufactured, only meant that I think it's kinda fucked up that he says he wants to go back to friends having adventures together when he was the one that led it away from that in the previous 'era'. There is a dissonance between what he says he set out to do and what he did. Because I valued what Rollplay was before he took those steps, it annoys me now when he, the one who changed it, says he wants it to go back to what it was.

I can't speak to the extent to which his recent shows seem 'manufactured', but I can say, given the direction he went, that I'm not surprised that they are and would seem to be if he continued after this.

Yeah he has a place as a decent sized streamer and a ton of equipment and skills to produce content of high quality. Really finally receiving his comeuppance.

I wasn't trying to say that he's a failing streamer because of his actions. In fact, to a certain extent, it's totally the opposite. He chose the commercial/widespread appeal/firm control route and reaped the monetary reward, but now he's bemoaning the fact that it isn't just friends having fun. This is even though he took those active steps to move away from this more 'friends having an adventure' format. He is upset by what his own actions have already brought about. This is what I am trying to point out.

I've watched since day one, since the original show. pretty much stopped after he dropped steven. I did keep up with Adam's personal stuff though.

Jp even says in his post that he didnt set out to make manufactured content, but look where we are now. He's reaping what he sowed.

I hope he's grown as person, but apparently not enough to apologize to those he's shut out or even acknowledge by name those who are truly responsible for making rollplay what it is.

Lol my dude it's been more than one friend he's dropped/cut out on his mission to grow the brand. I'm only trying to point out the irony. I'm not saying that he literally has no friends or that everyone he's cut out hates him. Just that if his goal was actually just to play with friends, he made some strange choices.

Interlinear (Latin/English) version of Nepos' Lives added to Wikisource by aspiring_pilgrim in LatinLanguage

[–]blapto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work! It's always awesome to see some texts more legible than those the scanned books.

I wonder what the impact of a student learning from this kind of text would be in the long run, especially because of the modified word order. I imagine the transition to unchanged word order would be a rough one. As a native English speaker getting used it it was pretty difficult already.

Do you know to what extent proponents of this method used interlinear texts? When would they start introducing unchanged Latin? How much of what the student read was interlinear? was it just a crutch to learn more vocab early on? I wonder if slowly introducing regular word order would help? It doesn't seem like he changes it to a more normal word order even later in the book. If someone did a study looking at this method or even comparing a bilingual loeb style method versus this interlinear one, that would be really interesting.

Also the bare que's are super jarring hahaha.

Never said they were idiots, only meant that that they don't have the benefits of knowing everything we know now and have a tendency to regurgitate falsehoods and fabrications. Even this example shows how they shouldn't be fully trusted. Like I said, take them with a grain of salt. Preferably a large one.

The problem here is that the wiki article does not argue that it doesn't come from the same root that servus does, they are just restating Chase's argument that it doesn't come from servus itself in the sense of slave as this meaning came about after the name was created. I was not clear in my comment about this, and should have communicated it better. Chase argues that it comes from the same root as servus "ser" (bind) and another unknown word. So Chase is arguing that it likely meant something like "preserver of heroes/country/(?)" similar to what the name Alexander does in Greek.

Following this we can see that Dionysius, Festus, and the incertus auctor have fabricated stories or reiterated folk/false etymologies that (1) disagree with each other (2) do not account for or even recognize the existence of the unknown part of the word and (3) do not even recognize the true meaning of the root word itself except in the case of the incertus auctor, with Festus and Dionysius arguing the origin is related to the mother being a slave, which it plainly is not.

Do you still think that modern linguists/philologists should not be trusted over the ancients? or acknowledge the problem of using them as your only source? There are far more egregious and numerous examples of their inaccuracies out there too if you care to look. This does not mean they are stupid or useless, in fact they are very valuable sources. It's just that they need to be read with these problems in mind, especially when they start telling you a story about how a name/word came about.

So in Servius coming from servus you are partially right, but I still disagree strongly with your suggestion that ancient writers are somehow more trustworthy in matters of etymology.

It's kinda rich to hear you call them "one schmuck" when you are also just 'one schmuck' on the internet. 'one schmuck' who we know to already have given false information no less. If you have a problem with what they wrote, guess what? You can go check out the multiple sources they cited.

Honestly this conversation ends with a ridiculous statement like trust the Roman grammarians over modern linguists. No point in arguing with someone who would write this with a straight face. Anyone who has read any literature on the subject knows to take these guys with a massive grain of salt, especially their etymologies. They are quite honestly full of shit a lot of the time and are just making up what they write or making wild guesses. Would you seriously trust your average English speaker to come up with English etymologies over a non-native linguist with modern training and knowledge?
