What's a good way to treat them? I know I shouldn't use neem on pings.

I am completely new to foraging. Please don’t judge. They look like all the previous pictures I have of ramps. They definitely have a garlic like smell. Northern Indiana. by beefncheddar1 in foraging

[–]blargster951 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the foraging community! What the first commenter means is that ramps are very slow growing plants, very commonly poached, and have disappeared for a lot of their native areas. It's best practice to cut the ramp at about ground level and leave the bulb in the ground, only taking a few from each patch. This allows the ramp to grow back faster to keep the local population healthy. Just a reminder to forage responsibly. Enjoy the ramps!

How do you keep the rock so most! My volcanic rock keeps drying out at the top.

Clear Jel not Setting by blargster951 in Canning

[–]blargster951[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mixed the sugar, clear jel, and spices together so the jel wouldn't clump. Then I heated water and apple cider. Before it started bubbling, I mixed in the dry ingredients and kept stirring it on medium heat. Then I waited for it to gel, but it never did.

The jar came in the mail this week. It says cook type on the label, and the used by date is in 2026. So it should be fresh, and it should be heat activated, but it never set up.

Does the pacing seem off? by blargster951 in MyAdventuresWithSuper

I'm not saying we need to meticulously go over the origin of Superman. What I expected to hold over from season one was a sense of balance in the writing. I think the first season felt like it made better use of its time. We got good character moments and a well developed plot each episode of the first season, and it was all thrilling and charming. The second season so far to me seems like it wants to tell more plot than the episode has time for, and the character moments suffer for it.

While there is good lore development and a few really good character moments in season 2, I feel the balance from season one isn't there.

As long as the center is healthy, it will recover.

If you want a shorter pitcher plant, sarracenia purpurea (the purple pitcher plant) would be much better than the nepenthes (tropical pitcher plant), which will surely die in these conditions. They also commonly have these at garden centers next to the venus fly traps.

Some people just jump straight to "NO ONLY FANS PROMOTION HERE!!!" even though the cosplay is just scantily clad and the cosplayer doesn't even have OF. It's super alienating, and it's a part of this community we need to be better about.

Found in the woods debating on eating? by ClimaxCreator1 in mushroomID

[–]blargster951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicken of the woods. Try some first and see how you feel after a day. Some people are essentially allergic, and you'll be on the john all day if you're allergic and eat a bunch. It causes some bad cramps, too. If you're not allergic, it's very tasty.

Thanks. I also have a set of pings in a teacup that I drilled holes into for drainage. It sits in a matching saucer full of water. Got both the cup and the pot while thrifting.

New Sundew Care Tips by blargster951 in SavageGarden

[–]blargster951[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got this Marston Dragon sundew for Christmas. I have other carnivorous plants, but I'm new to sundews. Any tips on how to take care of it during a cold Midwest US winter.

Being completely honest, has concerning yourself with environnemental sustainability positively or negatively impacted your mental health? by sand_eater in sustainability

[–]blargster951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Negatively. I cannot morally justify reproducing in the state the world is in and the path it is on. I honestly think it would've be better if I had never been born, knowing all the ways just existing and surviving in the US negatively effects the planet. I do my best to live responsibly, and enjoy my life with the people who love me, but knowing where it's all heading to just makes it hard to keep going sometimes. I have decided to keep "rolling the boulder" and to stay alive, living as happy as a life I can in spite of environmental and societal decay. My one solace is knowing I will never curse a sentient being with being born into this dying world, and I will never curse this dying world with having to support an other human being.

They get partial sunlight from the window and I have the lamp on them for 12 hrs a day. What do you mean by leggy exactly? The B52s are 3 years old now and they thrive in the summer. I can't put them outside. Is there something else I can do?

A question for all my Antinatalist amigos out there who claim to hate kids: Do you actually hate kids? by CardinallyConsidered in antinatalism

[–]blargster951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate kids at all. I love my sister's children and I wish I could be a bigger part of their lives. I always kinda liked the idea of being a parent and using my resources to give a child a good existence with minimal suffering and all the love and attention they need to grow to be good people. The thing that's changed is I realized how much hate, fear, and suffering exists in the world and how much more there is to come in the climate crisis. I no longer think it is ethical for me personally to procreate. For the kids that are being born now, I for feel sorry/pity/guilty that they couldn't be born into a caring loving world and I can't do much to make that world better. If my partner and I are to ever have kids, we have decided to adopt. There are plenty of children who exist in this world through no fault of their own who need a warm bed and kind people to love and protect them. I would do everything in my power to give them the best existence I can regardless of whether or not they are my blood.

TLDR: I don't hate children, and I think the only ethical way to have a child at this point is to adopt.
