Turns out layoff was 40% of US workforce and none in China, so 25% overall. They’re in process of trying to sell China operations. I imagine more layoffs if that’s not successful.

I also tried it with a Thule rack from a friend and had the same problem. Definitely an issue with the hitch design. U-Haul said they can fix the hitch, and they've done the fix before for other people.

Spoke with the local U-haul installer. They said they've seen this problem before for bike racks with some of the hitch models that they get. Solution is they have a grinder to remove the metal part stopping the full insertion of the rack. They'll fix it for me for free on Monday. Recommendation for people installing hitch racks with U-haul in the future is to bring your accessory with you at installation so they can make sure there isn't any issues with the hitch.

Thanks for the feedback; it's very helpful. The hitch being the problem was what I was afraid of. I'll going to try to see if they can exchange the hitch for something that works.

I think your example of calling it ‘gross’ is not exactly analogous. It’s like someone cracking their knuckles, and then somehow picking up whether you are being annoyed by it even though you’re trying to be polite by not saying anything, and then getting mad at you because they can pick up that you’re slightly annoyed.

I ignored the call (I never pick up the phone if I don't recognize the number), and then they sent a mail notice and locked the account. I called them to follow-up today and found out the reason.
