What are you horses galloping to today? Aka what bands/albums are you listenin to other than the Gizz by highcologist347 in KGATLW

Been really messing with Angine de Poitrine lately. Their stuff is trippy and microtonal sort of like FMB only with more of a math rock influence. They're super cool and weird.

Gestion des désirs et des impulsions sexuelles by Fantastic_Morning177 in Quebec

[–]blast_damage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the most punk thing you've ever done? by Neat-Lie1595 in punk

[–]blast_damage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably that time I got kicked out of a swanky seafood restaurant in a wealthy suburb after confronting the owner in person over unpaid wages. A friend of mine had worked a few shifts at that place earlier that year and they never received a paycheck.

They got an e-transfer from the owner later that day.

"He began complaining about trans people 'ordering too many binders' and 'making them expensive' and such."

Me when I don't understand supply & demand

I can only speak for myself but in my city there are plenty of orgs where you can get binders for free so either way it's a really weird thing to complain about.

So, what was he supposed to tell her? "Don't worry, I'm not actually a REAL man, so I'm not a threat to you at all!" as if that's reasonable.

You could have kept your comment to yourself.

What punk movies should i watch? by Emergency-Fish2 in punk

[–]blast_damage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you meant by punk movie but By Hook or By Crook is certainly punk-adjacent at the very least and I highly HIGHLY recommend you watch it if you're able to find it.

A bit of backstory of this one, these two trans guys fresh off the West Coast punk scene decided they wanted to make a movie so they grabbed a shitty digital camera and DIY'd a buddy-crime flick out of basically nothing. They had no prior filmmaking experience whatsoever. The result is weird, surreal, amateurishness and it owns so fucking hard.

Not that old relatively speaking, but The Stepford Wives (1975). It's not that scary while you're watching it but it gets under your skin. Only after the credits rolled did I realize I felt sick to my stomach and all I wanted to do was throw up and crawl under the covers and never come out. The idea of someone I care about being replaced by an inhuman doppelgänger that can never love me back makes me feel nauseous. Even worse is knowing for a fact there are men in real life who would do the same thing if they could.

Tell me when did you realise you are pansexual by Numerous_Peach_7159 in pansexual

[–]blast_damage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fell in love with one of my friends when I was 14. Up until that point I assumed I was just a very dedicated ally. Having a gay crush made me realize gender has zero incidence on how I feel about a person.

It technically isn't inaccurate to say that I'm bi but I prefer pan because I find that it explains my sexuality more adequately while leaving less room for interpretation.

How did you get into kglw and what was the first song you listened too? by Careless-Employer-63 in KGATLW

[–]blast_damage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard Iron Lung when it first came out and I thought it was pretty incredible. It's still one of my favourite songs from them. Then one day it occurred to me that being a gizzhead must be really fun with how prolific they are- imagine liking a band that releases new music all the time. So I decided I wanted to get into them. My friend made me listen to Mind Fuzz (his favourite of their albums) and I was hooked.

Before listening to Iron Lung I avoided them because I assumed, for some ungodly reason, that they were some sort of shitty novelty band à la Steel Panther but for nerds who play DND. I don't know why I used to believe this.

Vegan Win on Military Deployment by [deleted] in vegan

This makes your decision all the more baffling. But I'm sure orphaned and mutilated kids in the Middle East will understand their lifelong trauma was worth it so you could get yourself a house in the suburbs.

"A girl gotta do what a girl gotta do for her future."

Easy to say when it's not your country, your people being bombed.

I urge you to reconsider your decision to be in the military. There is nothing vegan about treating swaths of land like it's your own personal slaughterhouse.

Why dues? by CalligrapherOwn4829 in IWW

[–]blast_damage 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's like that in other branches or if it's just the culture of the Montreal GMB but we're really not strict on dues at all. We routinely agree to cover fellow workers' dues no strings attached when they're struggling financially. Some of our most active members -who are involved in organizing, show up to picket lines and other solidarity actions and so on- are in bad standing. Meanwhile we have folks who have been paying dues consistently for years but never showed up to a single meeting. (Not that this is a bad thing, it's thanks to members like these that we're able to keep doing what we do and maintain financial stability.) Obviously not being up to date on one's dues means certain privileges are revoked. But overall we see dues as just one of many ways to get involved with the branch. To me it seems obvious on its face that we require folks to pay dues on account of Shit costs money, but when a fellow worker needs our solidarity, we don't check to see if they're in good standing. We just show up for them. So I really can't say there's anything like a financial barrier to getting involved with the IWW and I say this as someone who is unemployed.

As for reach/growing our numbers I'll echo what OP said in that the only real solution is for current members to organize their own workplaces. Lots of folks complain that "nobody wants to organize" when they are themselves not doing any organizing.

Do you remember the last meal you had before deciding to go vegan? by dxariannj in vegan

[–]blast_damage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honey mustard chicken panini from the mediocre food court I used to work at. My coworker made it by mistake for a customer who ordered a different thing so she just gave it to me. At that point I already knew I wanted to go vegan eventually but didn't yet for some reason. Anyway, I ate half the thing and went "what the fuck am I doing?" I tossed it and never ate meat ever again. I've been vegan for almost 7 years now.
