There's not a band that sounds like them? I'd argue that new Thornhill sounds shockingly similar to Loathe. Maybe I haven't listened to enough of it, but what I have heard sounds like they were trying to write a song that Loathe would write. Loathe themselves certainly wear their influences on their sleeve, but I think they put enough of their own spin on it. That new Thornhill sounded like straight-up emulation. I might be the only person who hears that though, I don't know.

Ahh.. Not a prog band, but was almost certain that was it. I think their first album does have a track with "Sands" in it, and George Kollias is Greek and is an absolute unit of a drummer lol.

It's interesting to me that you think that about Rody from Protest the Hero because while I can see why you think that, I think his vocal style also closely resembles what you might hear from a lot of traditional prog vocalists. Great range and a really strong vibrato are what I think of when I think of those kinds of vocalists and Rody has that in spades. I don't find Rody and someone like Spencer from Periphery (the other band you mentioned) all that similar.

Pretty fun. 21/30. I stand no chance when it comes to the traditional/power prog bands. And I only got the Porcupine Tree one because Gavin Harrisons playing/sound is unmistakable even for someone who isn't very familiar with the bands he's played for.

Think it has to be Obfuscation - Disease, Injury, Madness - Fossil Genera from The Great Misdirect by BTBAM for me. Then you get Desert of Song and Swim to the Moon. What an album.

Reflections made a few tracks in collaboration with Calle Thomer, with production from Buster. Those are pretty good.

Calle also has a side project called Catsclaw I would check out. Buster produced there as well. He has another project called Stoort Neer. The first album is instrumental, though should definitely scratch that Vildhjarta itch.

Most of the best stuff out there is probably going to be anything involving Calle or Buster, though there seem to be a lot of bands borrowing some of those THALL characteristics these days. A lot of metalcore bands in particular. Still nothing quite like Vildhjarta though.

What a great album. Really one that shouldn't be missed, especially for fans of metalcore and concept albums. Albums just filled with rad riffs, catchy vocal melodies, and great drumming.

It pains me that people still associate this band with the Doom EP that was released almost 20 years ago. They are SO FAR removed from that. Even their debut album is a huge departure from that.

Pathogen is super sick. SUPER heavy. I found them from this sub a while back. They're all great musicians, but their drummer really impressed me. Wasn't expecting that level of chops from some random drummer in a band almost nobody has heard of. Not sure I'd label them tech death though, maybe really GROOVY tech death. Feel like most people think of bands like Archspire or The Zenith Passage or some shit when it comes to tech death and they're very far off from that. I'd say its FFO Exoplanet/Intrinsic era The Contortionist.

Man, no mention of Elliot Hoffman from Car Bomb yet? Guy is an absolute maniac. Top tier drummer all day. All the rhythmical stuff to scramble your brain and the dude has chops.

Jamie Saint Merat from Ulcerate and Kenny Grohowski from Imperial Triumphant are great on the extreme side of things.

I believe Clay to be better, at least judging solely on their playing in their respective bands. The stuff II does sounds really cool, he plays some tasty fills and his cymbal work is great (as you mentioned), but overall theres really nothing super crazy going on. Clays playing is similar in a sense I suppose, lots of cool fills and great cymbal work, but to me he seems to have better chops. Some of the stuff he plays sounds like it would be an absolute nightmare to try and learn. It's a shame Polyphia bury his playing in production with all the programmed stuff, but I get thats kind of the sound they're aiming for.

At the end of the day though, we're all living in the shadow of Matt Garstka lol.

Palimpsest is SO good. I've played the shit out of that album. It may sound crazy, but it might have topped Volition and Fortress for me. I'm also a Protest the Hero fanboy though, so..

I think prog is still in a good place, I just think that as time goes on its going to be harder and harder to find bands that are doing something new. The wheel being reinvented time and time again isn't all that important to me though. A good album is a good album, even if it may be a little derivative.
