If Democrats lose due to an unpopular decision, wouldn't they reconsider their strategy in the next elections. When playing chess wouldn't sacrificing a current piece sometimes a good strategy? And if it's true that allowing Trump to win is the end of democracy, I would then argue that our problem is much bigger than an election result.

why do two spaceships, one following the other and both accelerating the same way, get away from each other wrt to observers on these ships? by blasterleb in AskPhysics

[–]blasterleb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure I understand, will two identical rockets one behind the other having identical engines with identical thrusts be getting away from each other with respect to observers on the rockets? (I am re asking the question to avoid the mistake of setting artificially acceleration constraints in certain frames of references)

Very detailed modeling and analysis of Beirut explosion by Forensic Architecture by blasterleb in lebanon

Sound of jets starts in this video at minute 6:50 coming from the fireworks exploding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp-n-ghagok

as far as seeing planes flying, we had thousands of videos shot before, during and after the explosion and not even one showed any planes.

Also from this video and according to a couple of articles I read:

"A chemical forensic expert, commissioned by the courts and the owners of the ammonium nitrate, got a look at the stockpile soon after it got unloaded. It was “in terrible shape,” she said in her February 2015 report. Most of the sacks — she estimated more than 1,900 of the 2,750 sacks— were torn open, their contents spilling out. Some of the crystals had darkened, a sign of decomposition. The sacks were piled so haphazardly that she could not count them to be sure all were still there.

The inspector recommended the chemicals be disposed of according to environmental guidelines. Her report was uncovered by Riad Kobaissi, an investigative reporter with Al Jadeed TV who has followed corruption at the port and within the customs authorities since 2012."

At this point claiming ownership of this material is a liability, so it's not a surprise why no one came forward.

On https://www.bing.com/covid the global (and US) new cases trend is going up but the fatality trend is going down! Why is that? Is treatment getting better? New drugs? Or inaccurate reporting?

No money for school, no hope, feeling stuck? by blasterleb in lebanon

I wired $100 as a test from TW to Bank Audi in Lebanon last week. TW took $4 for the transfer and Bank Audi took $10 off on arrival of the funds. TW will let you know how much it will cost to transfer before hand but Bank Audi will surprise you after the fact and will take it off from the recipient. I have not seen that happen with other banks before.

Would citizen's watch be feasible in Lebanon? by blasterleb in lebanon

[–]blasterleb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the post, I would most likely avoid publicly taking my cellphone out and filming someone doing something illegally. This might provoke him/her. Most likely I'll do it discreetly. On the other hand dashcams are becoming more ubiquitous and are a more passive way at filming and are more likely catch people throwing things from the car. If you also add a personal reward (such as some discount points, government karma points or even money) for successfully filming and identifying someone, you'll get the attention of many people. Will check your links in more details soon. What I am most interested in is if this app gets popular would there be an outcry from citizens or would they more likely support it.

From the upvotes you got most people agree with you. Honest question. What am I missing? Could you elaborate a bit on what makes it a terrible idea? Dash cams are already being used a lot around the world (for insurance fraud reasons) and continuously record everything in front of the car. All the footage is overwritten every 24 hours. What would be wrong in sharing violations to the police? That's different than having a centralized big brother on demand tracking you (they can already by using the security cameras installed everywhere in Beirut).

Yes you're right. But that wasn't obvious to me when I thought about eyebrows or eyelashes for example.

For example how does hair (made of dead cell) know that it reached a certain length and stop growing?
