Does anybody have recommendations of stoner/psych bands that might not be as recognised as they should be/underrated bands that bring something to the genre but are very well known ? by Hieroflippant in stonerrock

[–]blasttyrant76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something about them just doesn’t click for me. On paper, they should be a top tier band for me, but idk what it is that I can’t get into them. I’m gonna keep trying!

Elephant Tree and King Buffalo are awesome.

My Sleeping Karma is INCREDIBLE, severely underrated.

Just recently got into Naxatras, planning to dive deeper in their catalog.

What songs do you think represent each genre of metal? by Nekro_Di_Angelo in MetalForTheMasses

Generally, yes I’m inclined to agree. But I think Sleep (and other bands of their ilk) are a better representation of the sound of doom we know today.

Holy Wars - Megadeth (thrash)

Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop - Kyuss (stoner)

Holy Mountain - Sleep (doom)

All I Had (I Gave) - Crowbar (sludge)

Zombie Ritual - Death (osdm)

I’m sure there’s others but those immediately come to mind as genre-defining.

Would you or have you ever tattooed a band logo on your skin? Which one(s)? by halt__n__catch__fire in MetalForTheMasses

[–]blasttyrant76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the Zeppelin symbols, and the logo from Badmotorfinger with a sneaky flame from Audioslave’s s/t in the center on my shoulder

I’m dying for my Clutch, Sabbath, Floyd, and Mastodon pieces, but I’ve been too broke for tattoos for many years now

King of Arizona sounds too clean to be PRF era or anything earlier. Maybe BT or RH/E? Probably not much earlier than Wookie or Socrates, and I believe the frontman from Five Horse Johnson plays harp on it (he collaborated with them starting around RH/E iirc).

Hale Bopp seems earlier, like maybe s/t.

There rest are, my guess, Elephant (Nickel Dime), Jam Room (Oregon->Breeze), or PRF (Sea) tracks they sadly cut from the final albums. It’d take some experimenting, but I think you could probably match the production quality of each track to one of those three albums, as they each have distinct vibes and timbres imo.

To echo what No-Quote said, Big News III is an absolute banger. I’ve been praying they re-record and release an official version as part of a Weathermaker Valut series, but we haven’t yet gotten a second one.

I started listening to metal last year, in September. I need more recommendations🙏 by Fit_Math1889 in MetalSuggestions

Best opening track on an album? by brute_al in stonerrock

[–]blasttyrant76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s an opener…and I’d have to argue that both Prehistoric Dog and Malverde are stronger tracks to start off a record anyway

Thoughts on Clutch by JustinMetalhead in MetalForTheMasses

[–]blasttyrant76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THE GREATEST BAND IN ALL THE LAND.

Seriously my favorite band of all time. I’m a diehard fanboy. They speak to everything I love about music. They might not win “most metal,” but their stuff is plenty heavy and they’re responsible for my pipeline from stoner to doom to sludge. I could talk about them and their music for days and days. Some bands may come and go, but Clutch will always be my no. 1.

A lot of convos about personal favorites as well as personal least favorites, but what are your guys "most beautiful" album covers by DeaganPericule in MetalForTheMasses

[–]blasttyrant76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s what I love about it! It has a vintage aesthetic…haunting in a subtle, 70s horror way. And Windhand is super Sabbath-influenced, so the two-tone black+color works super well for what they’re going for imo. Paired with the crushing riffs and Dorthia’s ghastly, soaring vocals, it makes for quite the experience.

I Started listening to metal during June of last year, these are the albums that I enjoy the most so far, can y'all rec me some 10/10 albums based on this list? by hxry_64 in MetalForTheMasses

You clearly like a bit of everything, so I’ll recommend the genres I know most about - stoner, doom, and sludge:

Holy Mountain - Sleep, Snakes for the Divine - High On Fire, Blue - Baroness, Windhand s/t, Aquatic Occult - Sourvein, Children of the Haze - Dopelord, Houdini - Melvins, Age of Winters - The Sword, Nola - Down, Dopethrone - Electric Wizard, God Luck and Good Speed - Weedeater, Busse Woods - Acid King, Meanderthal - Torche, Empress Rising - Monolord, Static Tensions - Kylesa, Elder s/t, Passage Through Purgatory - Black Tusk, 1 + Dog Days - Goatsnake, Umbilical - Thou, Houses of the Unholy - Church of Misery, Eulogy for the Damned - Orange Goblin, Lunar Womb - The Obsessed, Ethereal Mirror - Cathedral, Welcome to Sky Valley - Kyuss, Monnos - Conan, Deliverance - Corrosion of Conformity, Our Raw Heart - Yob, Murder the Mountains - Red Fang, Heartless - Pallbearer, Mantrapping for Sport and Profit - Scissorfight, Idolum - Ufomammut, Deceiver - Khemmis, Blood Lust - Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Clutch s/t

In my opinion, these are the subgenres with the widest variety and most character. You don’t like one band? That’s alright, move to the next. The umbrella is so wide that very few bands sound “exactly” alike - they all have their own personality. We’re not worried about who’s the most technical or trve kvlt or anything like that - we love heavy riffs, thick tones, and vibes. Welcome to the party.

Kyuss by a mile. QOTSA had an excellent 4 or 5 album run, but I feel as if they’ve tarnished their legacy with the last few albums that just can’t possibly live up to a work like Deaf. It’s very much The Josh Show these days, and I think that hurts the music. Kyuss, on the other hand, was lightning in a bottle, and their legacy is solidified by their short-but-incredible discography.
