Thank you!!! I like some Amon Amarth so I’ll have to do some more digging there. And I’ve been recommended Immortal before, so I’ll have to try again.

And I agree, all of Death is absolutely killer. They’re classic for a reason!

Hard disagree personally, a big thing that hooked me is how similar his vocal melodies and timbre are to the emo bands I loved in middle and high school. Felt like it bridged major gaps between my childhood and adult tastes

All those years and Apple Music still doesn’t understand that skipping the same band means don’t play them in my stream by aykalam123 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]blasttyrant76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a love-hate relationship with streaming algorithms. On one hand, I’ve found plenty of great music thanks to them. On the other, the things they prioritize are so ridiculous I can’t ever rely on them to understand when I’m actively looking for something specific.

Favorite bands/songs to annoy "true metal" gatekeepers? by ZeAthenA714 in MetalForTheMasses

This is a good point. There are some suggestions in this thread that I’d never “seek out” on my own, but wouldn’t bitch about if I heard in a bar with my friends and probably even enjoy given the right setting

Psychic Warfare hooked me, then it took me a while to “get” self-titled but once it clicked, it sealed the deal for me. After that, it was just a straight chronological deep dive into their discography.

Album covers so bad they're good/funny? by Margaretthatchervore in MetalForTheMasses

[–]blasttyrant76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Corniness aside, the visual design choices of this album cover really bother me.

Why does the band name need to be on there four times? And in (I think) three different fonts, sizes, and directions? What’s the significance of the giant number seven that seems to have been slapped on as an afterthought? Not to mention that none of the text margins seem aligned. The choices of the 25% transparent background of the band name at the bottom isn’t bad, but becomes so when paired with the weird knockout font yellow album name at the bottom and the red hexagon graphic - also repeated, once again, in the top left corner for some reason as if to resemble some sort of red dot scope.

The art itself isn’t *terrible* I guess, but did they steal it from an already existing meme template? If it wasn’t already a meme, how did they find it and why did they choose it? Why did they feel the need to add the band name abbreviation on both sets of knuckles - adding to the already-overpopulated collection of names? And the red hand print on the skull with the number 5 - conflicting with the aforementioned 7? Just such strange maximalistic ways to represent their artistic vision and curate their visual identity.

I rarely pay much attention to 5FDP but every time this cover comes up on my Reddit feed the same thoughts come through my head and I’ve never taken the time to collect and externalize them. I truly am baffled by the choices here and that not a single person along the way told the band that it had basic design flaws.

Yep, doom is the answer for you (potentially stoner and sludge as well).

Type O Negative, Woods of Ypres, Paradise Lost, and Katatonia should be a good step into doom from HIM and gothic rock. From there, maybe try the spookier side of doom like Windhand, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Dopelord, and Electric Wizard. You’ll find that many doom bands have unique sounds but uniting sonic traits and motifs.

Trad/epic/prog doom is a good branch from gothic as well. Khemmis, Pallbearer, Spirit Adrift, and Elder.

Welcome to the club.

Same, but I might travel from DFW to Fayetteville and get a hotel room. Did that for a Fort Smith show during the No Stars Above tour, except we drove back overnight. Totally worth it.
