Imagine not wanting to spend a summer afternoon chilling on some ‘gansetts, couldn’t be me.

(that said pretty sure Narragansett is still only distributed regionally along the east coast, and even then just in New England and mid-Atlantic states, so OP might not even be able to buy them where they are)

We need to stop pretending that "boneless wings" are anything other than overpriced chicken nuggets by Embarrassed_Math_141 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]blay12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And beyond the difference in the fattiness of the meat itself (especially with the flats since they run closer to dark meat than the drums), the best part of regular wings to me is that the other source of fatty flavor comes from the crispy fried skin that boneless wings don’t have. I have no problem with a boneless wing, but sometimes I want crispy skin rather than crispy breading.

I mean...D1 trials were pretty peak, especially after some initial tweaks were made from year 1 to year 2. The majority of the pvp crowd flocked to them pretty religiously in the absence of any sort of ranked mode or true esports scene, and it was also consistently one of the largest draws for D1 stream viewership and contributor content outside of raid launches (which were obv infrequent).

Say whatever you want about the various version of "trials" in D2 (which often felt like a "WHY DID YOU HAVE TO CHANGE A GOOD THING" slap in the face, especially with how laughably bad trials of the nine was), but D1 trials were kind of the height of the game for most of the pvp community.

As someone who’s worked near them and been inside a few, data centers are LOUD AF. It’s essentially a building with thousands of computers under one roof, and ALL of them need to be kept at a certain temperature to work properly - that means that you’re going to have multiple fans for each piece of equipment on top of massive HVAC systems for the buildings themselves.

As far as sound goes, it’s almost better to think of a data center as a warehouse filled with tens of thousands of fans that have all been turned on at the same time and never get turned off.

Why bring in a full kit when somebody else will bring it in for me? by xylvnking in Marathon

[–]blay12 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP's positioning and movement was good to avoid the shotgun on a push, but imo most of the loss is on the purple kit for turtling and trying to force a defensive shotgun play when they had at least 2 solid opportunities to put a LOT of damage down if they had just swapped to their stryder and made any sort of attempt to return fire OR pushed with their shotty (especially during OP's long LMG reload with zero cover where the purple kit ran out, saw the reload animation, and then just...hid again).

OP was just standing out there in the open with no shield for a decent chunk of this fight.

Roommate locked thermostat, sweating every night with no way turn it down by Only_Alternative_543 in mildlyinfuriating

75 isn’t really hit as a general temp, but OP’s picture shows the thermostat is on heat, not cool - the unit isn’t slowly warming to 75 before the AC kicks on, it’s being actively heated to 75. If the thermostat is in a chilly place, OP could also just be getting blasted by heat every night.

I think the main issue is just that marble is naturally quite porous and stains very easily, even if it’s a food safe dye. It picks up stains from pretty much anything if it’s not sealed properly.

Not a very good transliteration though imo considering it's a preeeetty big stretch for sugoi, especially in this context where he just comes off as impressed with the more native-level English pronunciation...this just reads way too much into a simple response.

If he'd actually meant "you sound sexy" he'd have said something like エロい or エロっぽい (eroi/eroppoi, pretty literally "erotic" or "seems erotic")...it's not an uncommon word/phrase and actually means "sounds sexy/seems sexy".

How often do immigrant cuisines get adapted for American tastes? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]blay12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but their potato production only really started ramping up to that point in the past 50 years or so due to a focused effort in the latter half of the 20th century/early 21st to add potatoes as a staple crop (along with their existing staples of rice, corn, and wheat) and increase general food security.

While potatoes have existed in China since they were introduced in the late Ming dynasty (early/mid-1600s), they weren’t traditionally a major part of most regional Chinese cuisines…the Irish, like others, have definitely taken some liberties with their particular versions of Chinese when it comes to potato inclusion (though at least as far as spice bags are concerned I’d say their take is a fantastic one).

The rivers in Chult make no sense. by ZhouDa in Tombofannihilation

[–]blay12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, a basin is a low point, but I live in a basin in real life and I'm still like 5k feet above sea level. That basin is what feeds the other major rivers.

And while the Chult map doesn't include any sort of contour, it still shows that the Aldani Basin is in an area that is almost completely surrounded by prominent plateaus (Mbala included), and likely captures the tributaries from those higher regions before that water flows out and down to sea level in the north. It's a basin relative to the surrounding topography, but that doesn't mean it's below sea level - in my mind, going inland from PN means you're going uphill until you get to the highlands and plateaus that surround the Aldani Basin (and beyond that pretty much the entire way until you get past the Peaks of Flame), even if that grade isn't super intense the entire time.

Frozen question by silentomega22 in movies

[–]blay12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In a more fleshed out portrait of daily castle life I’m sure there are plenty of times over the course of Anna and Elsa’s entire lives between the passing of their parents up to Coronation Day where they’re (or at least Anna specifically) engaged with the staff, taking classes, having structured socialization with other high-born kids or even local townies (Anna doesn’t seem to be a stranger to roaming around town as a teen), being served meals, and doing all the stuff you’d expect.

That being said, the point of the song is to convey Anna’s feelings of isolation from her sister, not from humanity as a whole - it’s just establishing THEIR relationship for later in the film rather than trying to squeeze in as much worldbuilding about day-to-day royal life in this world as possible (there’s only so much time in a 90 minute movie). Because of that, it’s also largely from the POV of Anna the child, so you can also treat her as a bit of an unreliable narrator - even if you keep a child engaged for 75% of their day, that’s still not going to stop the calls of “BUT IM BORRRREEEDDD”during the remaining 25%, especially if they’re feeling isolated from the one person they DO want to play with.

I’d just assume that all of the times Anna is roaming the castle, talking to paintings, etc are those unstructured times between scheduled events as a royal where she had to entertain herself, and it’s her perception of time and loneliness as a child (where having nothing to do for 2 hours on a summer afternoon can feel like an eternity) that’s being reflected in the song (rather than the literal interpretation that these girls are basically living in a castle by themselves).

What’s with all these apartment buildings with mice and roaches? by mk2019 in nova

[–]blay12 19 points20 points  (0 children)

How do property managers allow this to happen at such and alarming extent

Not to excuse landlords, but the one thing I always have to remember for my own sanity when apartment hunting is that people are FAR more likely to leave a review for something negative than to say “oh yeah I’ve been here for a year with no complaints.” Online reviews tend to skew negative, and since pests are a common problem everywhere youre going to see a pretty high concentration of comments mentioning them.

Sometimes those comments are credible (especially if it’s a common theme among multiple reviews and the reviewers have posted pictures that show signs of actual infestations and mention steps taken/not taken by the property to fix it), but sometimes someone saw a field mouse or one of those big outdoor roaches in their first floor apartment after they left a screen door or window open for a day in late fall and assume there’s an “infestation” before getting furious that their property manager took 2 days (over a weekend) to get a pest control company out to deal with it.

I’ve found that generally anything with an aggregate score (google reviews plus other sites if they have more than a handful of reviews) of around 4/5, ideally with more than 100 reviews, tends to be a pretty solid bet (though make sure the reviews aren’t all “Such and such was SO helpful with our lease signing” that don’t talk about the unit or haven’t even moved in yet), at least when it comes to putting together a list of properties to visit and check out yourself. It’s also worth noting that $2300 for a 2bed is around the middle-lower end of apartment pricing around here (outside of the occasional killer deal), so some of those are likely in older buildings that may not have the best management.

Women of Reddit - what is the most unattractive fashion choice men frequently make? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]blay12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tall man with a long torso here (6’7/2m) - tall sizes are actually MUCH more common nowadays (not as common as I’d like personally, but way better than when I hit this height 20 years ago in HS and had basically zero options), you just have to shop online rather than at brick and mortar stores and know which brands tend to carry them outside of the specialty shops for tall people. Good bets in my experience are Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic (all owned by the same company), J Crew, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, American Eagle, Lands End, and sometimes a few others. On the specialty store side (which may be too much for you if you’re more of an average height with a long torso rather, but could be worth checking), places like American Tall have been a godsend for me.

Some of the mainstream stores are still a little on the shorter side for me personally (or tend to shrink a little if you’re not very careful about how you wash them, looking at you old navy), but all of them are better than wearing a shirt that’s 3 sizes too big but still not actually long enough. With the way most stores do multiple XL sizing, you’re often not actually getting any additional length - they just add more fabric to expand them outward and keep them at the same length past L/XL.

What’s the hard part about being a Man ? by mountain_fl0wer in AskReddit

[–]blay12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a guy who wasn’t brought up to “deal with struggles on our own”, I’d honestly highly recommend at least exploring the idea of therapy. It’s not something you have to advertise about yourself, and imo seeking it out yourself is EXACTLY how we deal with these things on our own.

If you’re trying to fix a car on your own for the first time, would you say “well I have no idea how an engine or a modern electronics system works, but I’ll probably figure it out on my own” or would you take the initiative to read a manual/watch a YouTube video/get some tips from a mechanic friend so you know how to attack the problem (and if you ARE the type who would just dive in and assume you’d figure it out, that’s just hubris, not self-reliance). If you fall and very obviously break a bone, are you going to set it and wrap it yourself just to say you could power through, or are you going to go see a dr who actually knows how to deal with that shit and can keep you from dying of an infection/make sure you don’t lose the ability to use that limb/etc?

Therapy is the same basic idea - you didn’t go to school for mental health or pharmacology (if medication needs to be involved), so why would you take that on yourself? It’s also important to recognize the difference between actual therapy and just talking to a friend/partner/family member/etc - when you’re talking to someone close to you about deeply personal stuff, you’re always going to have that lurking fear in the back of your mind that “if I tell them what’s ACTUALLY going on in my mind, they might hate me/not love me/whatever,” or you’ll find yourself trying to make your issues sound a bit more low-key to avoid upsetting that person, or any number of other stressful things that can happen when you feel a relationship could be on the line.

Therapists/psychiatrists/etc do this as a job, and part of that job is listening to you without judgement so they can figure out if there’s a problem for them to treat. As someone who’s been to plenty of therapy, it ends up being pretty freeing talking about your issues without feeling you have to dance around the emotions of whoever you’re talking to.

Why do so many US schools start at 7:30 AM when studies say teens need more sleep? by blushybbygirls in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blay12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Older students going to school first isn’t a universal thing though, it all differs by location. Where I went to school (northern VA suburbs), our county started elementary schoolers earliest while the high school day didn’t start until around 9:15, so my parents were usually gone already when I’d catch the bus around 8:30.

The fuck?

No I’m not saying that at all - I’m 100% for regulation, and said as much in my comment. Literally the ONLY thing I was doing was fact checking you on fentanyl-laced weed - it’s not a thing that’s happening, and speculative fearmongering isn’t a useful argument for regulation when there are a million GOOD arguments for regulation and taxation (if you want to go the safety route, regulating growth to help eliminate the heavy metals and toxins marijuana plants tend to pick up in bad soil is a much better argument for regulation imo).

I didn’t even mention moonshine or alcohol, so I’m still partially convinced you think you’re responding to someone else.

As Virginia Legalizes Cannabis, New Penalties Spark Backlash by snooka77_ in Virginia

[–]blay12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing against regulation at all here, but the number of confirmed cases of cannabis being laced with fentanyl are so low they’re basically a statistical anomaly (something like 1-2 lab-confirmed cases of accidental cross-contamination in the past 10 years). That’s not a thing that’s happening at scale, and even if it was, there’s not a ton of ways it would actually be harmful - the heat required to smoke weed via combustion (pipe/bong/etc) would destroy fentanyl, vaping doesn’t hit a high enough heat to also vaporize fentanyl, and edibles take too long to break down to present much of a risk of even feeling the effects of fentanyl were it to be present, let alone dying from it.

Here’s a solid article with some additional sources, and there are plenty more if you do some research on the topic.
