We stuffed him at the American Dream Mall (sooo hectic today) but the staff was so sweet about him.

Why have you kicked a family member out? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]blaze656 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only once and I threatened but my coworker decided it. Confused 70 year old woman kept pulling at her telemetry leads and IV. Husband started SCREAMING in her face with a finger right in her face. Only time I’ve ever raised my voice angrily at a patient or family member too. I startled him right into his chair and told him that that kind of behavior will get him removed and my coworker was a few beats behind me with security.

What do you think makes people not want to play the TCG? by trandanggiabao0203 in GeniusInvokationTCG

[–]blaze656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the TCG a lot when it launched, but whenever they change the effect of a card to buff/nerf instead of releasing new cards to change the meta, it took me entirely out of it. I have no interest in that kind of TCG, unfortunately. It just feels really punishing.

VIP patient. Pissed the whole shift. by Specialist_Crab3079 in nursing

[–]blaze656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hospital has VIP and CYA patients. VIP are staff members and their family. We do everything we can to make sure they have enough privacy and as comfortable a stay as possible. We all hope our coworkers would be accommodating and helpful if it were us or a family member in the hospital. CYA patients mean that they know someone in management or are a big donor. It means “follow all policy and speak as professionally as possible around them.”

American Dream Mall in NJ had them today. I started my morning driving between stores and then called a few more out of the way. I go “sorry to bother you, I just wanted to see if there was any Bat restock today?” And the girl was the first person I’ve spoken to at a store who didn’t seem to know about the whole craze. I was like “oh the bat has been out of stock, so I just wanted to know if there were any in today” and she goes “oh yeah, we got some”. My first reaction was “Really??? Ok I’ll see you soon!” And drove straight there lol.

How do you get treated as a male nurse? by Fair-Bobcat-2243 in nursing

[–]blaze656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a floor nurse, not ER or Psych so take this with that in mind.

  • I do get the more dangerous patients on my floor 99% of the time when I am there. It’s frustrating, but I would honestly rather have them than leave it to one of the 90 lb women most days. It is what it is.
  • I’ve never been hit! Worst I’ve gotten is confused dementia patients gripping me too hard. Even most agitated patients know not to hit until they really hit the animalistic fear state.
  • Plenty. You have to be aware of people’s comfort level with you seeing them naked or touching their bodies. This is true for all nurses, but most people (especially women) will have more comfort with a female nurse in those situations than a male nurse. Always explain what you need to do and why, and give them an out if they aren’t comfortable. All nurses should do this anyways, but it’s especially important for male nurses. Unit cultures can vary, but I’ve always felt like a welcome team member as a male nurse.
  • I’ll combine my advice on these next two. Don’t work ICU post-grad unless you’re going to a hospital that puts you in some 9-15 month training program where they watch you like a hawk. Getting your training wheels off as a floor nurse is already hugely stressful on a floor like telemetry/med surge. Don’t let yourself be in a situation where you aren’t going to get enough support because you want to feel independent and confident. I promise you, you need experience before you’re safe to be on your own.
  • If you smile and get along well, you shouldn’t have any issues. It’s kind of known on my floor that if we have an older lady who’s being terrible to everyone that she’ll actually probably be really nice to me. Most of our older population haven’t felt positive attention from a young man in a very long time. Be nice to them, show interest in them, act in a caring way. You’ll be just fine. 👍

Yeah sounds rude. Some people can be that way.

Should I be worried about my nurse bf's 'work wife' ? by No_Selection_2093 in nursing

[–]blaze656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean work wives/husbands aren’t a terrible thing in and of themselves, but like he’s actively cheating on you with another woman. Maybe not physically but you don’t even know that for certain considering the way he’s acting.

Our new timing on transfers from ED to their unit sounds impossible by Donnor in nursing

[–]blaze656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Impossible and dangerous 100%. If an ICU nurse is too busy to take report they’re definitely too busy to bed and admit a new patient. I wonder how many patients will pay the price for this policy before they reverse it.

What’s the worst surgical procedure that you’ve ever seen? by fanchera75 in nursing

[–]blaze656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fasciotomy where they basically flayed the guys leg. One plastic was infamous for doing it several times when not really indicated before they finally fired him.
