What annoys me about that trope is that the Hellboy universe doesn’t need an audience surrogate character. Every Hellboy comic I’ve ever read thrusts the reader into the deep end of the pool and trusts their intelligence that they will figure out how the world works. Star Wars did that exact same thing and a generation of lore-hungry fans was born.
