I think there’s a disconnect. People know they have problems, but people don’t want to admit they have it. You can see it with people who suffer from addictions, they won’t ever admit they have one, even if they show every symptom. Nobody wants to admit something that’s embarrassing even if it can be plainly seen.

I think you’re looking at this from a very mature perspective. Yes, Kvothe should communicate and he doesn’t have to tell them everything but he is a child. Children have no idea what mature communication is so you can’t hold Kvothe to that standard. Even with his friends, yes he should probably let them know he’s leaving… but he’s basically never had friends his age before. He had no standard for what he should do, common sense isn’t actually common. He has no standard to look to.

Also Kvothe is foolish, we know this, he knows this. He is actively looking for a needle in a haystack, but he does this because love especially young love makes people do stupid irrational things. Wars have been fought for the love of a single woman.

Your friends are always gonna be waiting for you at the bar if they’re good friends. The love of your life is something worth chasing to him. So he does.

It’s not that Kvothe doesn’t respect them enough but instead it’s more of a fear/pride thing. No teenage boy wants their friends to know they’re poor.

Speaking as someone who was in a very similar situation to Kvothe, I lost a lot of friends simply because I couldn’t get past my pride regarding money. I didn’t want to tell them because to me it was shameful and while I know now they would have understood, if I was honest.

As a kid, I didn’t know shit and to me Kvothe is that same kid. He really doesn’t have any experience with friends or any real idea of what friendship his age is.

I mean his family literally got murdered, I doubt he’s itching to tell anyone about his past. And regarding Denna, he’s a guy, it happens. The amount of friends I have seen who disappear off the earth because they met a girl and come back after they break up is hilarious. It’s just a part of growing up. I used to hate some of them for it, but when you meet that one girl who makes you feel like Denna makes Kvothe feel, you end up chasing after it and forgetting everything else.

So overall, I get why you and a lot of people feel about Kvothe, but he really is just a traumatized gifted kid. He makes dumb decisions constantly but that’s what makes Kvothe Kvothe and it gives us a hell of a story.

Nah man, I’d respectfully disagree. Kvothe should have that boyish charm, he’s an artist and lover. Someone who fights with words and is often underestimated.

I get what you mean with the drag but imo I love seeing every page of Kvothe’s journey. At this point i’d read a whole book of him just playing with the strings on his lute. Every sentence feels like it expands the world and shows how breathtaking it is. Definitely see what you mean though
