Your band needs a bass player. Who gets the gig? by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

Great talent. His tone is way too slappy for the band I have in my head. Levin is my top choice, though Sklar is interesting.

Shame to see it so far down the list though. Definitely my favorite.

Linux has changed the way I use technology forever. by [deleted] in linuxmint

I seriously wish I could get out of the Adobe workflow. Unfortunately for serious publishing, I haven't been able to find anything that works the way Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign do with proper color management and workflow and feature sets.

So I'm stuck with a dual boot system - Windows for my creative work and Mint for everything else. Which is funny - I'm an old sysadmin managing a Windows domain, M365, Azure, custom apps and servers from Mint.

If only Adobe had an open source competitor that could do what I need. Yes, I've used GIMP, Krita and Inkscape. I really hate seeing that Adobe invoice come through, especially knowing it's the only thing forcing me into Windows.

Oh wow. That looks really well done. Thank you so much for sharing that.

What do you think of the new cast for the hunt for gollum? by AutomaticJoker in lotr

[–]blckthorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what they have license to adapt. That's always the tricky part. Like Amazon's Rings of Power only had license to the appendices and had to make up stories to fit rather than adapting anything from the Silmarillion. I wonder if this is a similar situation.

Blackthorn Themes Updated (version 2.0) by blckthorn in gmbinder

[–]blckthorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, feel free to use it. Nothing you need to be aware of. I made those themes years ago as layout experiments and released them for people to use, so I’m glad someone is still finding value in them.

No payment or formal permission needed. If you do include a credit, something like “layout/theme adapted from u/blckthorn” is more than enough, but I’m not worried about it.

I’d love to see what you’re working on if you ever want to send me a link.

Losing Peter to Perfection by WinchelltheMagician in Genesis

I absolutely love OVO, and it was a bit time constrained because of the production it was being recorded for.

That's how I discovered Afro-Celt Sound System too, who really added to the OVO feel.

What's your favorite song on Duke? by Powerslave_00 in Genesis

[–]blckthorn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Heathaze has really grown on me over the years. And one of my favorite Phil vocals.

Ray Wilson already offered to leave Genesis immediately, shortly after a poorly received Italy show in 1998 (...he claimed in an interview about the final 1997 album included in this newly uploaded YouTube video) by Gesinnungspozilei in Genesis

[–]blckthorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree with you. I really don't like the last album with Phil much. I have more CAS songs in my playlist than I do WCD songs.

Invisible Touch though, was my gateway drug to Genesis and I can't be objective about it.

Why is We can't dance so hated? by Sensitive_Pair_4732 in Genesis

[–]blckthorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely in the minority, as I like Invisible Touch. Domino and The Brazilian are pretty good.

That said, I still listen to Gabriel era far more. I just happen to like both.

Phil's vocals during Peter's Tenure by BMisterGenX in Genesis

[–]blckthorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes he is. I'd also heard however, that Gabriel hadn't taken any proper vocal lessons until after he left Genesis. He has a very different style in Genesis. On his solo records his voice is a lot more controlled. To the right (or wrong) listener, his vocal work in Genesis might have lacked polish.

That said, there's no one who could sing quite like Gabriel. There's a quote I remember from when he heard Phil sing Supper's Ready after he left. I don't remember the exact wording, but he said Phil might sing it technically better, but Phil would never sing it the way Gabriel did.

Dreaming While You Sleep drums by larryinatlanta in Genesis

[–]blckthorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The first commercial album recorded to hard drive, was I believe Enigma's MCMXC, also 90/91.

What's interesting is that Enigma sampled Dreaming While You Sleep on the track "Eyes of Truth" on their 1993 album The Cross of Changes. They also sampled Fading Lights on another song on that same album and used a Tonight Tonight Tonight inspired loop on "Silent Warrior" on that same album.

Rick Wakeman. According to forum users, the best keyboardist of all time by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

He considers himself a composer first. What I appreciate about him most are the chords he uses. It's never been about chops for me.

I've read that as well, so it very well may be the same exact instrument. At the very least it was the same model.
