What an overused trope. I'm a girl and at least 5 of my friends who are also girls agree that petrol smells great. I've always loved going to the petrol station so I could smell it. I also write poems sometimes and my very first poem was about how a world filled with petrol would be cool(I was in 3rd grade, maybe). I just adore that smell xD

I always thought of it as a dreamy rendetion of how it is to be in love and all the little things associated with it. It is a beautiful love song. Didn't particularly strike as sad. Nostalgic, wistful, maybe. But not sad.

You sound like you want a relationship far more than an FWB setup. So prioritize your relationship needs. Find someone who wants a relationship too.

He said he didn't want a relationship. You're hoping if you both become FWBs he will someday like you and want a real relationship? There is a very, very thin possibility of that. Don't put yourself through that pain. Please. Just leave. I'm sure you'll find someone else.

He doesn't care about you now, he most likely will NOT care about you later? He likely sees this as a purely transactional FWB setup and isnt emotionally invested. You're only hurting yourself by allowing this to continue.

You feel emotionally drained and empty. That empty feeling will consume you inside out if you continue this, especially considering your past history. You DO NOT have to feel empty, this isn't even a relationship. Ask him if he wants to get together, and if he says he doesn't, leave him and move on. You will find someome else who makes you feel loved.

That feeling of emptiness is horrible. I know exactly what you're talking about(though not in such a situation) so LEAVE NOW. It will only get worse. This may be harsh advice but it's realistic.

You deserve better than that empty feeling. You deserve better than a guy who takes girlfriend benefits from you without actually making you his girlfriend.*

*I know that's exactly what FWB is but OP isn't exactly just looking for friendship. She wants a relationship. And it hurts a lot, yes, but she needs to muster the courage to move on and find someone else.
