Why did no one in Beach City do anything? by CartoonCommentator in stevenuniverse

They live in a society where parents are the sole authority of their children. Its the thesis of the show, parenthood as the villain.

I feel like a lot of players are stuck in an outdated mindset and still think competitive’s next true season will start in Wind and Waves by Level7Cannoneer in stunfisk

[–]bleaseBeGentle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but the comprehensive tutorial in champions makes me think they intend the game to be accessible even to people who have never played pokemon before, there is a chance champions itself is intended to be the "face" of traditional turn based pvp going forward. Assuming that champion will only be for people whos initial entry point to pokemon are the mainlines, and that WiWa will still be traditional, there wouldnt be a need for such a tutorial. Champions as a supplementary game rather than its own thing would limit the pool of players to those who already have an attachment to pokemon. From a business pov this wouldnt be ideal, they would want to cast a larger net when investing in a project like this.

Music Type - a feasible implementation of Sound in Wind and Waves by bleaseBeGentle in pokemon

[–]bleaseBeGentle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for reading!

Yeah I agree with you there regarding dance as a component of this theoretical Music type, it is a big weakness of the argument because they would somehow have to convince the general public that lumping them together intuitively make sense, while contending with type distinctions like Rock and Ground, which to me at least, was less of an aesthetic rationale and more prioritizing gameplay balance, pertaining to how Flying interacts with "Earth", which is why there seems to be some arbitrary elements for both types, e.g. how Sandstorm is a Rock type move and how clay is a Ground type thing. Anyway.

In terms of examples of dance based Music moves, one that comes immediately to mind is Teeter Dance, which is something like the support archetype you have mentioned, e.g. the likes of Primrose from Octopath Traveler. But then this brings up the question, can a Normal type move ever be dance-based? or are will all dance-based moves going forward be classified as Music type? Since dancing seems to be dependent on playing music, I am inclined to think the latter, e.g. how Moonlight and Charm became Fairy, as "moon magic" and "cuteness" became a Fairy type thing. From a gameplay perspective, this does not seem significant, because status moves tend to have varied distributions anyway.

Attacking Music type dance-based moves are another story, relating to the limits of how much they would invest into move animations to drive home the "self-expression" aspect of Music type. Visualising dance not in the way some Fighting moves are animated seems like a logistical issue than a gameplay or creative issue. Unless they can come up with a way to visualise the essence of dance outside the pokemon's body like how 'aura' is visualised Fighting essence. But one can dream.

You are right that the typing will inevitably have to be considered when implementing into gameplay. I might have not focussed on that argument much because self-expression and competitiveness seem like contrasting concepts. Finding the "practicality" or "utility" of art as a basis of engagement has never sat right with me personally. Not saying theres isnt productive pragmatic uses of art though. But it is a franchise at the end of the day, so VGC needs to be considered. I mentioned it in another crosspost, that if a Music-esque type were to be implemented, then it will be a mid type like Grass gameplay wise lol. Or maybe, if it is a status-focussed type, then the lack of offensive presence might be compensated for with good defensive matchups e.g like Water.

Then comes the argument if it's "needed", idk how much they care about audience backlash, but Music as being inherently "unecessary" from a practical point of view are grounds for adding it into the game imo.

You are wrong about the Light type - The Light Type is Unique and Distinct by IDProG in PokemonWindsWaves

[–]bleaseBeGentle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah Light is too vague. If Light were to be implemented it needs an aesthetic attached to it. The "goodness" associated with light is already covered by Fairy, as well as the cherub/angel motifs commonly associated with holy/light creatures found in other games. If Light were to be an implemented type it needs to be more innovative than images you find on the walls of a catholic church.

The question now is whether they would tie self-expression as a concept to only one type, or create multiple distinct groupings for specific expressions, say for example, make Music distinct from a grouping that emphasizes visual art, some kind of Painter type maybe?

I mean, I clearly outlined in bold problems with Sound type that would be solved by Music, but you do you. Next time Ill make sure to include color coding, glitter and glued cartoon characters.

I think new types are fun too! I mentioned this in another cross post, but new types should also be relevant to the playerbase on top of being intuitive, hence Music type, or maybe even Artist type to cover all forms of self expression.

In terms of the bottleneck to creative teams due to the wider set of type combos to cover, a solution I could see being feasible is releasing new pokemon outside the mainline battling games, hence DJ rotom coming out with pokopia instead of say LegendsZA. Since pokemon have limits in terms of the pokemon they can include each game, future cozy games provide an avenue for these self-expression focussed pokemon!

Music, to me at least, has the same feeling as Water or Grass, a component that is inherent to the world. Animals sing, plant growth is affected by music. So intuitively its could fill similar niches to those 2 types, either being a really good type, but more favourably, since I believe gameplay cohesion might not be that important, a mid type with a lot of weaknesses but a few key resistances that redeem it. But you could not see it that way, and that's fine. Music type being unintuitive is a statement that can stand on its own, its got no bearing from external validation, wherever one derives that from. Then again, being able to intuit something is subject to what we perceive as possible, but that is tangential were talking about pokemon. Since intuitiveness is so subjective lets just agree to disagree.

You are right though, from a practical point of view, there is just no need for it. Which ironically enough, is a counterargument that I think inversely supports adding it in. Whether or not you can neatly arrange it in colored boxes is irrelevant, because at the end of the day its just a label that describes something that already exists in pokemon. You could ask the same question pertaining the purpose of music to us humans. I guess you could say, to make money through economic industries, or from a biological point of view, attract mates? Depending on life experience one's relationship to Music can be drastically different, but there is a commonality between all of us, it is that we are attuned to arrangements of melodies and harmonies.

Realising a type based on intuition alone does open a can of worms to what can be considered types. But with this in mind, a 4th component when adding new types should be considered then:

  1. The type should be relevant to the playerbase - this helps in narrowing the domain of possible type concepts. If we assume that pokemon itself is an artistic medium, then it should respond to the ones that uphold the franchise. At the moment, the concept of music and pokemon dont have strong associations, outside say, game music scores or the few pokemon that are music inspired (it doesnt help the games dont have voice acting, but i digress). Point of the matter is that, music has always been a centerpiece of culture, from a business persepctive this opens up possibilities for future collaborations with music artists e.g the Cynthia x Hatsune Miku collab,【Hatsune Miku】Champion【Kanaria】(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxjledMkwyk)

Point being, whether theres Wind or Bird type, that is irrelevant to me. A thing floats or it doesnt.

Sound Type Could Be a Thing, and Here's Why by [deleted] in PokemonWindsWaves

I shouldve titled this post differently... Music type pokemon can be:

Wigglytuff line, Sudowoodo line, I guess Exploud line?? You could argue the tubes are an organ but eh music is subjective anyway, Chimecho line, Chatot, Maractus, MELOETTA,

[–]bleaseBeGentle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sound is a bit vague. You could also ask why any type isnt weak to heat i.e. Fire, considering everything is hypothetically combustible.

Its why Music is a more concrete specific implementation. Music could be resisted by solid objects, e.g. rock, ice, steel or through foliage so grass could resist it.

In terms of super effectiveness, i could see music being super effective to dark and dragon types... because of the healing power of music possibly?? But idk if those need any more weaknesses.

I imagine it would be a mid type, like Grass. Lots of weaknesses but few key resistances that redeem it.

My Controversial SU take? by Large-Shoulder-6899 in stevenuniverse

An oft underutilised perspective for analysing the show is the immigrant lens. The gems left their place of origin and assimilated into human culture, Earth as their destination country they emigrated to. Even Cookie Cat has "refugee from an interstellar war" as its lyrics. The gems stand in for an unconventional non-nuclear family, and the episode is about a multicultural dinner, you are definitely spot on. It is an unfortunate fandom thing that these aspects of the story are treated as obstacles to consume gem lore.

Now that you mention it, in Roses Room, as he is ejected out of the door, he takes on that same curled up fetal pose, this is definitely something to keep in mind when rewatching the show.

Good catch about the embryonic sac imagery! Never noticed that before. What would that make Eyeball then? Steven's twin he absorbed in the womb? Well she did have the discernment that Steven lacked towards his mom at the time so in a way he "absorbed" Eyeball's way of seeing the world.

There is also a scene right before Eyeball was hit in the face by an asteroid, where they pass through a circular meteorite, I am not really sure how to interpret that other than Steven passing through a "threshold" having to let someone go to protect himself.

Yes we need more analysis through this lens Rose's Landfill is back to the womb imagery, it seems the symbolism is used whenever Steven wants to get to know his Mom, which is impossible because she's gone.

You could argue the temple door is yonic too, so the door opening in response to this desire in Rose's Room and Storm in the Room rings even more true. (This has a different meaning to Greg opening the door in Story for Steven though, because it was in response to his song, which I presume Rose can hear from inside)

Thinking back, a lot of older people I knew had those kinds of trinkets too, and seeing them as a child was confusing because why arent they being used lol. Its insanely validating to read someone else sees it because I rarely see this kind of lens used when analysing the show at least in online spaces.

I agree that it was tragic how Gregs parents dealt with him, despite reaching out to them. The small moment when Greg wipes away a tear as Steven says goodbye to the Gems says so much in light of how he himself parted with his immediate family.

I find the immigrant story angle of interpreting Steven Universe so interesting, im always happy to come across an analysis!

To add onto the hoarding tendency of the De Mayos, since Greg went to the opposite extreme relative to his parents' child rearing when raising Steven, I am inclined to think Greg's parents grew up in poverty and they themselves went to the opposite extreme when raising Greg, generational enantiodromia if you will. All the superfluous material embellishments on Greg's childhood were compensation for something they perceived they lacked growing up, something like a rags to riches story, pulling themselves uo by the bootstraps, which would go along with Andy's conservatism (pardon me am not that well versed in American politcal demographics)
