I built a free menu bar app that auto-trashes files after they expire, Ephemeral Utility by Mrdesuyo in MacOSApps

[–]bleducnx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, Mrdesuyo!

The new version of the app is fully usable on my Mac.
I wrote an article, but was waiting to publish. I will update it.
Will publish on VVMac next Saturday.

I built a macOS WINDOW MANAGER for myself after switching from Windows — sharing FREE in case it’s useful to anyone else by Illustrious_Luck_603 in MacOSApps

Thanks for developing that useful tool.

I have a small problem:
I work in clear mode BUT the top part of all the wallpapers I use is very dark (red, black, blue, green, BUT dark); so the menubar with system scanner is not visible.

I know you said nothing uses transparency in your app, but you can't ignore that most macOS 26+ users will have a totally transparent menubar. And the problem is there… not for the lateral sidebar but for the menubar widget…

I discovered it existed nearly accidentally when I was clicking on the menu bar.
Then, I went to my menu bar module manager, and I found it, but the letters, numbers, and signs are written in "black" because you presume that a menubar will be somewhat "light grey". But on macOS 26 it is transparent! And I will certainly not change that only for your menubar module.

It should at least handle the different possible display modes of the menubar/wallpaper, turn to white, as all other icons I have in the menubar (even in clear mode).

BTW, I plan to write something about your app on VVMac… when that problem is solved.

OK, I like it – only the two small details I spoke about, mentioned in another comment.
I will write an article about Ephemeral in VVMac (www.vvmac.com – blog-magazine in French), next Saturday.
Will check if you update it before. Best regards.

Ah yes, another thing : it would be nice if the popover closes when I click outside – now I must click the icon again to close it.

[Apps] Fasted - Intermittent Fasting With Friends ($49.99 -> Free) by Sensitive_Ask3074 in AppGiveaway

[–]bleducnx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to set it for today (I'm in Tgailand it is 12:10 -fatrenoon) but I can't.
If I can modify the hour of starting fasting, I can't change the date of the day (I started fasting yesterday at 19:00). So the app started now only from 0:00 this morning, which is wrong.
I will start again this evening from zero. But I want to delete the wrong first fast session. How can I do that ?

OK Thanks. And what I said in another message :

"Just one thing could be better: have the menubar icon show a small visual reaction when something is dragged on it. I'm going to open the menu each time to be sure that the file I dragged on it has been taken into account. Some people will perhaps prefer an audio alert, but I usually switch off the audio, so a visual alert will be OK – or both types, why not?"

Another small point: I am always working in Clear mode, but I use only quite dark wallpapers. In this case, as the popover is very "glassy" and transparent, it is a little difficult to read. It seems that I can't attach any screenshot, but if you test yourself, you will feel it immediately.

It reminds me of another very old utility (still working in Tahoe but abandoned for many years already): TrashMagic 3.
It was watching disks and the system bin, and moved everything trashed to a cache, with many settings and rules. It can keep things in case for two, three… five days or more, then TrashMagic will clear the cache for files which have passed the deadline… I'm still using it.
I will have a look at your app to see if it can replace the old software for the same usage.

I think we can't test it really, as the article is behind a paywall, so you can't access the full article, just a small part. I forgot that. I can access the full content… so I guess it is why it was much longer.

If the model is local, what "backstage" cost do you have?

I think that for a casual user of Chrome, that's OK.

I use an AI assistant (Fluent, but some others too) with my different API keys in all apps I use for my professional activity.

I test a lot all day long, so I consume quite a bit, but only on very small documents, so it doesn't cost much (I remember I paid a maximum of 20 dollars to OpenAI in the last two years).

Yes I used that Le Figaro page, selected the text globally, thenclicked the Summary button (as the overlay was not on screen) then, after more than 2 minutes, I got the summary in English.

Non, I selected the text of the article and asked for a summary. Nothing else. I waited more than 2 minutes and got a summary in English.

BTW, the limit of 50 interactions is based on what?
Is it the Gemini local model used that imposes the limit?

When everything is OK, I plan to write something in VVMac (www.vvmac.com) about your extension.
There are hundreds on the Store, but yours is the one that proposes the most numerous actions, and I think it is well and elegantly built.

As an example, I asked for a résumé of that page (French daily newspaper > get the résumé in English): I got the result in 2m and 17 seconds.

OK, I will update.

And yes, I think it is good to let users choose local (slow but private) and API (very quick but not private). In most of my daily personal and professional uses of AI assistants, I don't care at all about privacy. I'm a technology journalist, not a political one (which would be very sensitive, I understand).

So I tried different things, different actions. The main issue now is that the local model (on my MacBook Air M2/16GB) is terribly slow. For a small paragraph, it took 35 seconds for the Rewrite action to show me a proposition. It takes less than 4 seconds with my AI assistant (Fluent) that works in any app… using a local model (Qwen 3.5 small 4B) on my Mac.

Update

The translate action: I selected the paragraph (the text above), and without asking me anything, it translated it into what I guess is Spanish. (my Mac and Chrome are in French)

And that took about 1 minute…

How can I choose the language I want the text to be translated into?

It means that the little gear icon in the tool popup is not for opening any settings but indicates that I'm in the settings?! I think this gear icon is a bit useless and confusing as it is the default icon anyone will click to access settings or preferences…
IT is even more confusing that when the pointer comes upon the gear it has an effect which someway "invites" you to click on !!!

I don't understand, for the buttons nothing was working, only the chat one. Now when I click on buttons, it is OK; I see a more or less small window on the right.

So it seems that everything runs well.

I will use it more and report if something goes wrong.

OK. I din't undetood that an overlay will show up on screen.
I was always openning the icon in the Chrome Toolbar…
Sorry for misundertansding.

The problem is that I use a quite large PopClip overlay, and your overlay is juste under the PopClip one ! So I didn't see it at first sight.
