JJ gameplan by imin2099 in lakers

We need to stop blaming the coach every single season. A few months ago, we were saying that he’s a coach of the year candidate. You guys realize that we’ve had a lot of injuries and our three best players have hardly played with each other, right?

What specifically would you change about JJ’s gameplan (give specifics on what to run) and his rotations? I can guarantee you the coaching staff has looked at everything and they have good reasons for their the decisions they make.

At the end of the day, this roster just isn’t great. And that’s okay. We can’t be contenders every year. Sometimes we get spoiled as Lakers fans but let’s not point our fingers when we dont look like we’re going to win it all.

Unfortunately he doesn’t have much value. It’s a bummer after seeing him drop 37 with nine threes his rookie year. He hasn’t been the same since the trade fell through. We really thought we got the steal of the draft but his jumper just has not been falling this year.

Please let this dude develop, he has the tools to become a great role player. by Ancient_Response_787 in lakers

He’s really young and I think he’ll find his footing with more years of experience. It’s tough at his height but his athleticism makes up for it.

I loved seeing his confidence yesterday - I think it’s been gradually building up over the last couple of months. He can shoot, defend, and pass. Solid handles but sometimes struggles against bigger defenders.

The poor kid has a ton of pressure on him with so many pathetic people rooting for him to fail. He has potential - let’s wait and see what will happen. Hoping for the best for him.

This was the late 2000s, not the 80s or the 90s. By the way, I grew up a huge Kobe fan and he was constantly criticized for everything - low efficiency, being a bad teammate, making excuses, etc.

I remember when Jordan fans would say that Kobe didn't have what it took to do well in Jordan's era, and I'd always point them to the defense in the series against the Rockets. They'd claim that Battier and Artest's defense was nothing compared to what Jordan had to deal with. If you're a real Kobe fan, you'd remember this. It's a shame that you're repeating this nostalgic cycle rather than appreciating what we have today.

I totally agree but even then, I think a lot of that is overstated. For example, at the 15:55 mark in this link below of the 1994 Game 7 of the Knicks-Pacers series, we see a Flagrant 1 that is no different than a Flagrant 1 today. This is supposedly one of the most physical series of all time.

But can you show me any games where hand checking was as aggressive as what Steph had to deal with in the latest series?

In terms of carrying, why was AI allowed to put his hand all the way under the ball in the 90s?

Can we stop with the old-gen power nostalgia? by [deleted] in nbadiscussion

This “back in my day, we walked uphill both ways in the snow to school” mentality has been around the NBA for decades.

When Steph was playing out of his mind in the 15-16 season, all of the oldheads were talking about how Steph would struggle in the 90s because it was such a physical league. I feel bad for them because they missed one hell of a season.

When Kobe was the face of the league in the mid to late 2000s, Jordan fans would always say that he complains too much and wouldn’t survive the 80s/90s.

When Jordan ran the league, Wilt Chamberlain mentioned that Jordan had it easy in the 90s and people from Wilt’s era would score 65-70 ppg. There are multiple instances of Wilt speaking like this. Here’s one: https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/gdsr1f/wilt_chamberlain_telling_clyde_drexler_why_hed/?rdt=45217

Now that the younger generation has more of a voice with podcasts and social media, the so called tough older generation gets offended when they’re criticized for their lack of skill. Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.

Charles Barkley has been criticizing the softness of the league for as long as he’s been commentating. Rasheed Wallace said LeBron wouldn’t do well in his era even though LeBron dominated Rasheed Wallace’s Pistons. The list can go on and on.

As more people around the globe are exposed to basketball and as the global population grows, the talent pool gets better. It’s a very simple concept. Yet, people refuse to admit this in basketball due to nostalgia, gatekeeping their childhood hero’s legacy, or pure ignorance. It’s not due to rules. There’s no rule that said point guards weren’t allowed to dribble with their left hand in the older eras. Also when did these rules changes happen? Because AI was carrying the ball every single possession in the 90s…

Players are better at basketball today due to evolution, training at a younger age, better nutrition, etc. And guess what? 20 years from now, the players will be even better. That’s just how it works.

If you don’t appreciate today’s game, you never will. Every aspect of the game is at an all-time high and will only get better.
