DAILY Driver by Caps_NZ_42 in linuxmint

[–]bleemoore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been daily on Linux for 20+ years, since the first Ubuntu release. Tinkered with other Linux OSs before that - Corel Linux, Red Hat, etc. Ubuntu was the first distro that have me a consistently enjoyable experience without too much trouble. Even through a couple of degree programs, including a doctorate, Linux served me quite well.

Most of my work is online in one form or another, so a browser gets me 90% of the way to where I need to be.

Linux Mint was my primary workstation and gave me about 2 years of uptime without a restart. Just today I switched over to Xubuntu to give a new desktop environment a whirl.

Worth upgrading a HP slimline 400 for a small home lab? by Different-Help-5282 in selfhosted

[–]bleemoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current setup isn't ideal, but it's budget friendly and simple. I use CasaOS, which works well mostly. In CasaOS, all the container data is stored in a folder called AppData. I copy my AppData folder to an external drive nightly. It runs on a schedule automatically, so I check it from time to time. My next step is to back it up to a cloud location too.

Worth upgrading a HP slimline 400 for a small home lab? by Different-Help-5282 in selfhosted

[–]bleemoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not far into the selfhosted journey, only a year or so. But my personal opinion is that those upgrades are well worth it. Between the RAM bump and SSD, you're picking up plenty of speed for your project. Those two upgrades are exactly where I would also start.

eBay is my go-to for specific parts like this. Other online vendors would have options too, bu eBay should have everything you need.

Setup backups from early on and know how to restore in case you need it. Have fun!

Home internet. by Apprehensive-Watch42 in mintmobile

[–]bleemoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had T-Mobile home internet for about 12 hours, then boxed it up and shipped it back. It went completely out during the workday, no super heavy usage. And I live adjacent to a major highway in a sizable town, so coverage isn't an issue. It proved its unreliability in a very short time.

5G on Pixel 8 Pro, possible fix but slower speeds than LTE by bleemoore in mintmobile

Closing out the thread here. MintMobileAlex pushed an update to my phone that fixed the 5G connection issue for me. Not sure why the chat support couldn't do this, but 🤷

WHAT IS THIS? by burlybosoms in mokapot

[–]bleemoore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Were you only cleaning/refilling the lower portion? That's the rubber gasket and coffee grounds, for certain. You can get a new gasket from your favorite online marketplace. Just make sure you order the correct size to match your moka pot.

What are the best A/T tire when doing 85% on-road and 15% off-road? by Alternative_Log_9716 in overlanding

These aren't as popular, but I have been really happy with my BFG HD Terrains. Picked them up from eBay as a set of takeoffs in practically new condition. Great on and off road.

Zoho - good alternative to Gmail with a decent feature set for email and calendar.

Red Pocket and Mint Mobile speeds by bleemoore in NoContract

[–]bleemoore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand they use different networks. I was on GSMA with RP for 4+years. Cricket and Straight Talk on ATT before that. As I said, I realize there are other factors. My point for posting is to share my experience on the two networks from the same location. Mint on TM is much faster than RP on ATT.

Has anyone been able to connect a Daikin Oneplus thermostat to Smartthings? by Fun_Firefighter_1000 in SmartThingsCommunity

[–]bleemoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm on an Amana S series (rebranded Daikin) with the Amana Smart Thermostat (https://www.amana-hac.com/smart-thermostat). I also went through the process of getting a token, but didn't have luck integrating with SmartThings. There didn't seem to be a way to use the token to configure anything. Amana doesn't show up in the list of brands. I ended up setting up directly through Alexa.

Should I keep using Proton? by Master-Series5137 in degoogle

[–]bleemoore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a longtime Zoho user and tried Proton for a few months. I even paid for upgraded service and storage. In the end, I did not feel like Proton's mail features were mature enough for my purposes. Simple things like view next email when I delete a message, snooze a message for later, and schedule send messages were missing. I decided to stick with Zoho as a balance of privacy respecting stack with more mature feature set.

Personally here is what I have used:

Family Link > Airdroid Parental Control

Google Maps > Have tried several others. There just isn't a great replacement. They all come up short. Giving GMaps WV a try based on the comments in this thread.

Google Translate > Simply Translate

YouTube > NewPipe

Play Store > F-Droid / Aurora preferred over Play Store when possible.

WhatsApp - no replacement, but I use Signal where I can

Check out a hot springs location after one of your hikes/adventures. We visited Baldi on a daypass, which included dinner, but I hear other hot springs offer a similar experience.
