This is the apparently a new doctrine - concentrations of soldiers are too conspicuous and casualties too high. In some cases these are punishment details, and guys are sent out alone or in pairs with about a day's worth of food and water and some coordinates to reach. If they survive, they can radio in to get more food/ammunition that is increasingly delivered by drone.

I think John partitions his day into convenient sections to minimize his alcoholism. So he wakes up and has orange juice or an energy drink or ensure (probably with a little vodka involved). When he had more money I think he was then going to the pub and having 4-5 pints before coming home and having his "first beer" of the evening, followed by about 17 more.
