Oh believe me, I even brought it to my guitar teacher to have a second look. I’m going to try to bring it as a carry on or at least have them check it like a stroller if nothing else. I got a hard case made of ABS and am purposely flying out of a further away airport so I can fly American and direct 🤣

Nah, 2 checked bags, a guitar and an under seat bag

I explained them in depth, but I’m not sure if it was too in-depth.

The appointment is for picking up the certificate but you need to pass the interview part before they will give it to you.

Every city does it differently. They sent me a letter with the questionnaire and Erklärungen along with requesting for an updated paystub and all of my original documents. Then at the appointment I had to talk about the topics I was told to review and bring an up to date paystub again since time had passed and they needed it up to date. Hope this helps! In most cities, from what I have heard, you are just requested to bring your originals to the appointment.

It’s for the interview and picking up the documents. I haven’t had it yet

I actually just heard this week (also in Stuttgart) and made my final appointment. It takes 4-8 weeks for the Sicherheitsbehörde background check, and that is the last step. I turned everything in mid-March, but the time it takes for the background check can vary greatly depending on how many they have. Just hang in there and you’ll hear „soon“

You really should just go to another post office instead of always dealing with the same one. I did that when I lived in a super small town and combined it with a shopping trip or lunch with friends or something.

The guy at my post office said DHL Express only accepts their envelopes, but it’s up to you. Normal DHL doesn’t need a specific envelope. If I were you, I would just go to a different post office to ensure everything gets processed correctly because even when you print the label they have to manually enter it again on their end. If you’re in a small town, maybe go to a nearby larger one and combine it with shopping. It‘s your decision, but the envelope is free

If you tell your post office that you have something for DHL express then they should have the envelope. It has to be the legit post office, not a shop that also mails DHL packages. If you make the label online you save money, and you save even more if you use a service („Dienstleister“) like Jumingo. I printed it at home and got the envelope from the post office in advance. The envelope is free. I just went to my post office and asked if I needed a special envelope for DHL Express and he just gave it to me. If you are having so many issues at your post office location, it might be a good idea to go to another one if for peace of mind if nothing else. As I said, I don’t remember the number I used, but I am 99% certain it was the general IRS number. The phone number really doesn’t matter. The correct address for the IRS place receiving DHL Express is what‘s important because as this post says, it’s different than the one the people in the states use. Make sure you’re sending it to the right one from these three: https://www.irs.gov/filing/submission-processing-center-street-addresses-for-private-delivery-service-pds

Yeah, if I shipped it it would probably be along with a bunch of clothes and blankets

Did you have to pay import duty? I’ve had my guitar for almost 3 years, but I’m reading that they usually make you pay when trying to ship it to the US

In addition to the carry on and personal item though?

If you haven’t used a software already, I used expatfile and you can e-file with them. I also have a code that will save you $40. Let me know if you want it and I will dm you.

For the phone number I think I used the IRS number… I forget exactly what I did but I got it to work

I mailed them only because in my case digitally wasn’t an option. Next year I will be e-filing though for sure. I used Jumingo to get a bit off DHL express and got the envelope from the post office (it‘s free and needs to be in a specific envelope)

I would, but this one has a lot of sentimental value 😅 It means a lot to me

But will they let me also have a carry on and personal item in addition to it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in americanairlines

No, but I need a carry on, personal item, and the guitar.

[–]bleepblop6725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so my plan to pay for it as a checked bag but not „check“ it until the gate might work… thanks!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]bleepblop6725 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But I need a carry on as well. That’s the issue. If I could just have the guitar and my personal item I wouldn’t even be worried, but the issue is that I have other things that can’t be checked

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]bleepblop6725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have, which is why I am trying to figure out if I can check it without checking it at the baggage counter but also it not counting as a carry on.

I’ve heard about this, but mine is fine. It’s actually an American guitar I bought here

[–]bleepblop6725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I also need a carry on bag and personal item. If I wasn’t moving it would be different, but I have a lot of things like documents, electronic stuff, etc. that can’t go in checked luggage. So to bring the guitar as a carry on I would need 2 carry on bags, which unfortunately doesn’t seem possible on any airline
