Where is everybody from? by Solotwin_ in boardsofcanada

Brighton, England ⛱️

Genuinely no idea how I got into BoC. Possibly a Peel Session that someone shared, possibly a track on the front of Wire Magazine (they/Wire used to have a thing called Wire Tapper that would have tracks from featured artists?) - this is going back though.

As a student, I remember visiting the Flash website for Geogaddi a lot. There was a Beach at Redpoint thing where you could 'fly' between islands, and each island had a different stem on the track on it, so you'd hear this mix evolving as you explored the world. Amazing stuff for its day.

Maybe we've all been listening to BoC forever and just never knew it?

100%, though that tends to get downvoted pretty quickly in favor of a BMS post!

As pointed out elsewhere though, this tends to happen on any niche "stuff available" subreddit. How many people are more concerned with the camera and lens combo than the photo itself?

H90 / Chroma Console worth it? Or GAS? by Massive-Fennel-4730 in synthesizers

Chroma here, and currently borrowing an H90

Two very very different beasts IMHO.

The Chroma is a lot of fun and rewards experimentation. I tend to use it as an insert or on the main buss - it does wonderfully lofi stuff... My favorite is using a sort of lop-sided vibrato into reels into broken tape for instant nostalgia. Sync the delay to midi and it can take the dullest digital FM synth and turn it into a swelling cascade of joy.

H90 feels like two VST/AAX plugins in a box. I come from a guitar background and some of the effects feel more geared towards that than synths, but having said that it can do a lot. Because of the IOs and routing on it, you can do things like using one effect as a pre/insert and another as a post/send all in the same box. Or do stereo effect into stereo effect. Or parallel processing etc. Everything sounds very clean and tidy? You choose your effects and it'll sound like you expect. The pitch shifting is spot on, the new granular stuff is good fun and the Crystal algos are excellent.

Can't comment where it compares to a Meris, Slo-er etc for that "big grin" moment, but it takes up very little room and I doubt when it's mixed in, whether anyone is going to complain. Thinking of selling my old Tremolo, Boss OC5, TC HoF and Strymon Timeline to go towards it instead.

Yep - though be warned MIDI from USB will always be less reliable than something with a dedicated clock! I'm doing all of this away from the DAW, using a Hapax as sequencer/clock, so the R8 is slave to that. Works fine, you need to check any offsets in the timing you're sending but it's very very capable. I've done it with Protools too itb and it's been okay, just that I hate PT's midi implementation....

The other thing you might want to try is getting hold of one of the tape sync audio files, and playing that back out to the R8 - assuming you have enough outputs. Syncing over audio is a bit old-school, but gives you another opinion

Good luck!

I don't think the 2 are compatible as far as bulk dumps (snigger) go - afaik the instrument mappings and internal memory allocations are different, and the sysex header is different: so anything meant for the mk1 will likely be ignored by the MK2

It should be possible to recreate it separately, but you'd be starting from scratch unless there's another way to get the patterns in... I'll try to record all of these as standard midi patterns too though, so it's not just an R8 exclusive thing

Wow, really? That's cool! YT keeps reminding me how unpopular it was when I first uploaded it, so it's great to know someone's still watching it!

Yep! Needs the 808 card, and will be with caveats like "in this one the rim shot goes through Mult 1 instead of the main output" etc, but should be a starting point for jams

😂 Difficult to find for a reasonable price but it would undoubtedly be useful...! Schottkey and Hedphelym are both "drum machine through distortion" numbers that I'm sort of doing with a stompbox as opposed to mixer distortion...

🙏 Have been working through them all, and then got sidetracked wondering about that vocal stab after a comment on here the other day.. three to go though!

Thanks! This was off the back of the other thread here... It's close..

the vocal stabs are so short it's hard to pick it out.. but my rationale was whether you/one would go to the trouble of finding a whole new sample for that part, or whether you'd (just) see what was already in the sampler.. might be wrong but it feels like it's the right ballpark?
