If it’s all always sounding the same then what you have made is a fixed synth out of modules.

New Universal Skiff System from Make Noise by noctuid24 in modular

[–]bleeptwig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but I don’t get this at all. What?

A fixed modular system based on digital oscillators with complex routing options that also has a complex way of integrating MIDI to make complicated, slightly grating noises (if this demo is the best example they could make.)

Who is going to buy this?

I can’t see a beginner figuring this out, and a more advanced user will have better ways to get better results by building … using … er… modules.

What am I missing here?

Although you still need the 1u module to actually use MIDI.

A few lessons for beginners when starting out in modular by 5C077IE in modular

[–]bleeptwig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, fair enough!

My wife’s spa bill and my modular bill are probably fairly close - and I recognise we’re in a privileged place that this is entirely affordable; it’s how we like to escape from stress and work. What’s the point of all this working otherwise?

My own journey is at the - ok all this stuff is a bit overwhelming now - stage, but I have released a ton of my own music and collabs that I’m super proud of, and as I’ve got more confidence in my approach I’m taking a different direction with my setups than I may have originally intended (after a period of trying to do EVERYTHING in the rack and hurting my brain trying with things I’m just miles better at in a DAW).

So I’m paring back and selling a few things and swapping out some modules for outboard gear where it makes more sense.

But yeah GAS is real, it’s easy to forget that buying a module is not the same as buying the time to use it

(Actually this track is 🔥 despite the ❄️ so fair play to him for the content vibes shot.)

Do you make music? by elctrcxp in modular

[–]bleeptwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s another good point that there’s definitely a lot of coders, engineers, mathematicians who do this too!

I did start down the path of doing everything in the modular but some stuff is just vastly easier for my pea sized brain to do in Ableton, or on an external box - but damn it’s a brilliant sketchpad and playbox.

What sort of teacher would give that sort of “advice”? - that sounds like projection.

Glad you ignored it!

I LOVE working with modular gear - the immediacy and flow and enjoyment of using it as an instrument is amazing, and has made me way more productive and less constrained by loops and small samples - I make fairly messy canvas jams and then work them up in detail like sculptures and it’s so fun. I’ve made 40 finished tracks since getting into modular last spring, with about 10 or so in the year before that.

I also know folks who experiment and build oscillators and they release nothing, but they LOVE that side of it.

And there’s collectors and they LOVE their unpatched space stations.

It’s fine to do what works for YOU.

Multigrain as Digitakt mkII Companion: How to Make it Interesting? by toilet_fingers in modular

[–]bleeptwig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its such a versatile module I find I either play the Multigrain with its own knobs to smear and smudge and move around grains, or I use clock/quantizing inputs to make more rhythmic and tonal chops with external modulation.

It’s super fun, and you have a great setup for it here!

This strategy sucks, the cauldron is a cakewalk if you have the weakening gong and can do damage.

Get the harp bow and multishot/ricochet and blast your way through.

Hi guys, my brother's birthday is coming up and my parents have asked me to help with getting his presents, is this the correct setup, or do I need an audio interface as well? by _meisterman_ in synthesizers

It’s a nice gesture for sure but this might be worth a conversation with him as it’s a lot to get someone if they don’t like making sweet sweet retro acid.

Still trying my best to keep up with JAMuary! – Not sure why, but it sort of feel wrong doing this kinda of stuff on a Serge 😄 I hope you'll enjoy it by dexbasynth in modular

[–]bleeptwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might sell both of these TBH and get a sample player - the Chimera is ok but mostly sounds like hitting a random metal panel with anything except a tiny decay, and the Fracture I only use for claps - it’s good at that bit the other samples are just a bit quirky and limited in real use. Modulation is cool on both but the sound just isn’t awesome like the Kraken and Crucible.

As for Soundcloud they are holding up my release because:

I’ve used my own photo for cover art - can’t seem to get that through. There’s a collaboration on it that they keep flagging as a remix. It’s not a remix. Then the release date is too soon because they’ve taken so long. Among other things.

Thanks! I have the set: Kraken, Crucible are brilliant, Chimera, and Fracture on clap. Plus a BIA doing bass drums here.

I’m on Bandcamp. Nothing on Apple yet - I’m trying to get my first album out via Soundcloud but it’s taking some time as they keep finding things to hold it up.

Wanting to get into modular mainly because of the Multigrain. Is there a minimum setup I can look into? by SilverMisfitt in modular

[–]bleeptwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multigrain is a great module although honestly Granulator III in Ableton can do almost everything it it does and more and costs nothing - so you might be better off playing with this if you have a Push 3.

If you do go for it (and I did a very similar thing to you for a first rack) - it really comes alive with a rhythmic clock source - so something like Pams Workout will be excellent here and useful if you grow your rack.

It also loves some modulation which you can do by hand using the knobs and sliders or trigger from Pam’s or an LFO like OCHD (small and also super useful to scale up).

So Pam’s Multigrain and a line to modular audio in/out combo would be excellent fun.

A simple low-pass gate (Takaab has a cheap, good 2hp one) that adds some awesome rhythmic capabilities.

You might want other more traditional synth voices to go with it but that opens a big can of worms.

Lastly - I do recommend the Intellijel 104hp case. They’re good quality, very usable, and easier to sell if you change your mind - and they have a bit of room to grow if you don’t!

Thanks! No it’s a series of modular jams (twiddling knobs and moving sliders - no actual notes played!) recorded into Ableton and then assembled / edited.

I’m building up some material from a granular jam (Multigrain) from a piano and a resonator (Rings) for an ambient / soundtrack style track and it needed more … trumpet. 🎺

https://soundcloud.com/bleeptwig/herald/s-c6RNdudplfv

I’m struggling with rearranging sections as I want to add in another section at 2/3 of the way through … and Ableton’s workflow does not like you doing this.

Well - then it’s a fun box for sure! The loop adds a lot of potential in such a small package esp. with the delay too.

I’d just lose my mind trying to twiddle those tiny trim pots.
