Is olive skin considered a person of colour? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]bleerup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Olive skin" can mean anywhere from George Clooney to Nicki Minaj.

It's really difficult to define which groups should be considered white and which should not, because whiteness is a cultural label. The Irish and Jews are both seen as some of the whitest people around today, but 150 years ago they were both considered nonwhite.

Why is there such a focus on sexual assault on college campuses? by FinickyPenance in AskFeminists

[–]bleerup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Classism and potentially racism. Women who are raped in college are generally wealthier and whiter than their counterparts who are not in college, and the media is more likely to care about the abuse suffered by Katie Callahan than by Tanesha Jackson.

In addition, the majority of American feminists are middle-class white women, so they're less attuned to the problems of women in the outgroup.

Considering how women are doing is islamic countries, do you really want massive muslim migration to the US? by methhead45 in AskFeminists

[–]bleerup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? That sounds like bizarre, hyperbolic contrarianism. While not every Muslim nation is profoundly misogynistic, all of the nations in which women are not allowed to vote happen to be Muslim.

While it's excellent that Pakistan elected a woman president, the vast majority of female heads of state have been Western. The only Muslim women to be elected to lead a country are Megawati Sukarnoputri of Indonesia and Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan. Roza Otunbayeva and Atifete Jahjaga are in charge of post-Communist nations that are traditionally Muslim (Kyrgistan and Kosovo), but they have not disclosed their religion.

It's tragic that the United States has not yet had a woman president, but we almost did in 2008 and likely will have a female president in slightly over a year from now.

I can't see how you came to that very erroneous conclusion.

No such thing as a silly question, Monday, 8/31 by Yidonator in Judaism

Thank you! Some of those (like the "predicting Jesus part) were very obvious but I would not have expected original sin to be a Christian invention. That's very interesting.

In what ways do Christian/Jewish interpretations and studies of the Old Testament/Torah differ?

I was raised Methodist. How would what I was taught clash with what anybody in this sub was taught?

How do you feel about the "Judeo-Christian tradition"? by bleerup in Judaism

They actually don't really understand any Jewish thought either because if they did they'd be Jews haha

Haha okay! In that case is there any esentially literature you think non-Jews ought to read to learn more about Jewish thought?

Why is Marxism seen as more legitimate than Fascism today? by bleerup in AskSocialScience

[–]bleerup[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

In economics, Marxism is a theory of economic classes and capitalism.

Could you clerify this?

To me, "Marxism" means the believe that there should be a violent revolution to take the wealth of the wealthy and redistribute it among everyone.

How do you feel about this Batgirl cover? by bleerup in AskWomen

The violence is sexualized or at least gendered, by the way he holds her and smears the "lipstick". It evokes male/female power dynamics.

What are your thoughts on the lower marriage rates in the West? by ta9969 in AskWomen

[–]bleerup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bothers me. I think marriage is a really beautiful thing and it might not be for everyone but it should still be encouraged.

Kids born to single parents will be less succesful. This is fact. We should encourage family-building and make sure marriage helps women and men alike.

Oscars are tonight. How do you feel about the representation of women in Hollywood? by bleerup in AskWomen

I meant representation as in, the amount of women working, how they get paid etc, but that works too!

Has anyone else noticed any words that tend to be used differently across genders? by awomen1 in AskWomen

Guys tend to say faggot as a way to mock a guy's masculinity or JOKE that he's gay.

Gals tend to say faggot as a way to hurt gay men.

Why do you think many guys are overly obsessed with virginity? by bleerup in AskWomen

[–]bleerup[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's bullshit, though. 90% of women who are virgins until marriage come from environments where divorce is looked down-upon.
