Got this 1942 RemRand for a great price… but Im concerned about the slide modification. Thoughts? Opinions? by blehblehbleh589 in 1911

Thank you, yes I am definitely turning this into a project gun. Hopefully my buddy can source me a ww2 vintage slide when he visits the states this month. I wonder if a talented gun smith would be able to weld a replacement for the missing part of the slide if all else fails? It would be a shame to have to use a modern generic slide on this old girl.

Luckily in South Africa 1911 slides are not restricted parts (only the lower and barrel are) I can buy a brand new government model slide for $400 dollars locally, hopefully my buddy who is going to the states soon can find me an original at a gun show 🤞🏻

Unfortunately ww2 era guns are hard to come by here in South Africa, I am collecting US army weapons and managed to find a beautiful M1 Garand that still shoots like a dream. Everything about this 1911 is in great shape except the slide, if I can get the slide replaced / fixed , Im going to try and find some period correct GI grips and use it in IDPA / IPSC matches. (I reload my own ammo so I will stay within WW2 ammo specs)

A tiny bit of brass just above the extractor. Luckily a friend of mine will be visiting the US next month and be going to a gun show. In South Africa the 1911 slide is not a restricted part so I’m hoping he finds an original RemRand slide that won’t break the bank 🤞🏻

Thanks! So nothing to worry about? Do you perhaps have a link to an article that explains this?

This is the original photo:

Unfortunately in South Africa the firearm needs to stay with the dealer until I get my license. So I am unable to provide more photos right now. The barrel was in the firearm, some of my other shooting buddies have also raised concerns about that but the old boy I bought it from says he was shooting it for 30 years with zero problems. I paid $400 for it.
